That the Met's suggestion of 'flagging down a bus' if feeling unsafe with a lone officer is an absolute joke

Apologies if there's already been a thread on this topic as I haven't seen one.

The Met police have also suggested that women should shout out to a passer by, run away and knock on doors or call 999 if they feel unsafe about being in the presence of a lone officer. The same applies if someone was to doubt the genuinity of a police officer.

I live and have grown up in South London where most bus drivers are known for being unhelpful/unfriendly. A lot of bus drivers will even drive past you without stopping the bus when you've signaled the bus to stop.
I couldn't even imagine being in an uncomfortable situation with the police and a bus driver stopping to see what's going on or offer their help. Also, if a bus driver was to stop after being flagged down, what is it exactly that they're meant to do?

As for running away and going to knock on doors asking for help I can only imagine this is some sort of joke? Many (not all, but many) police officers tend to use excessive force in situations where it's uncalled for. I would never in a million years think to run away even if I am seeking help, because many police officers would use that as a reason to use excessive force.

Lastly, I think it's ridiculous how the advice given focuses on ways women can keep themselves safe in situations as opposed to the Met coming up with ways to keep women safe.
Just a little rant about something that's been on my mind for a few days, what are your thoughts?

My husband just said “give guns to all women, that should sort it”

He didn’t mean it literally but at least he understands the problem is men’s violence against women

I know it’s the Mail but they have a story today about how Patel had raised the possibility a police officer could be involved with Sarah Everard’s disappearance (prior to the case progressing to a murder investigation ) . That was a bit of a whoa moment for me .
I work in the same building as a lot of police and if I am honest I wouldn’t feel comfortable being left in a room alone with the majority of the male officers I have met so far . Misogyny is deeply ingrained in those whom I have met and at the same time myself and colleagues have to rely on their presence at times to feel safe to do our own jobs . It’s shit .

Yet another entirely reasonable & workable idea from the force who brought us a copper nicknamed "The Rapist", who they felt didn't need suspension following his repeated incidents of flashing at women.

It's a belter, innit?

  • I imagine they mean us to flag down this bus, which has the advantage of being able to magically appear whenever a stranded witch needs it ...

Yes it is utterly laughable. Make sure you get arrested on a bus route, ladies!

As the idea seems to be not to tackle misogyny (even if men know what it means), the tracker app is a great idea: all men should be compelled to use it. Women don't need to be tracked. It should be attached to their photo. All a woman would need to do to make a complaint about random dude in the street is state the time and location. The cat calls, the indecent exposures, the groping is all the so called "minor" things could be reported. I mean the police could even have an app that women could log in to in real time to make the complaint.

But while we're all supposed to be ever so thankful for these men knights in shining armour who want to help our raped end dead bodies be found after we're attacked, there's not a chance in hell they'd consider that they should be tracked. That would be an infringement of their liberty.

Flagged nag down a bus after 6pm won't happen round these parts... no buses!

DroopyClematis · 10/10/2021 18:56

Apologies...
For 'flagged nag" please replace with 'flagging.'

Buses don't f'ing stop at a ton of scheduled stops, let alone for some random person waving at them. Usual met not actually having a clue what a UK Street is like.
