To ask what contraception you use?

I'm nearing 40 and have been on the combined pill almost constantly since being 16 apart from coming off to have my 2 children.
Recently went to the docs as I'd noticed some changes in my breasts who took me off the pill temporarily while it got investigated (something to do with the combined pill increasing risk of breast cancer and therefore she couldn't refer me to the breast clinic while on a medication that increased my chances of getting it)
Everything came back clear but now I'm thinking it's probably time to reevaluate contraceptive choices as I'm not sure it's good to be on the pill for this long.

So, what does everyone else do? At the moment we're using condoms (I'm in a LTR) but I really don't like them.

Help please!

i came off the mini pill around 4 months ago, after being on it for 10 years. This was only because i felt it didnt suit me anymore, felt like i was going crazy all the time.
I have been tracking my cycles and using condoms on 'danger days'. i thought condoms would be awful but so far so good. we do invest int he durex ultra thin ones as they do make a big difference compared ot the free ones given to you!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/10/2021 14:18

Vasectomy. We had no desire for more children (they were 5&6 at the time), I can't use anything hormonal do it made the most sense for us.

LivingTheLifeofMum · 07/10/2021 14:18

I had a copper coil for a few years, took it out to TTC DC3. Currently pregnant with DC3 but will put it in again after birth.

Trying to convince DH to have the snip longer term!! Grin

weegiemum · 07/10/2021 14:18

Before kids I took the pill, afterwards had a mirena (and my first one failed and I had dd2) until dh had a vasectomy, once that was clear we haven't had to worry.

At 50 I'm probably too old to get pregnant but until my periods fully stop, I'm glad he's had the snip!

Pippa12 · 07/10/2021 14:19

I have the copper coil as I wanted a hormone free contraception as I felt the alternatives didn’t agree with me anymore.

I used the Evra patch for years, if I was to go back to hormone contraception this is what I would use first. The patch is in situ for 7 days and you can use them back to back.

Following for responses as I've recently started the mini-pill but am having more or less constant breakthrough bleeding and it's really irritating.

idontlikealdi · 07/10/2021 14:22

Condoms. I don't want a coil, am sick of hormonal shit so it's that it a vasectomy for DH which he won't do. It would be fair to say there is no spontaneity any more 😞

pinkpirlie · 07/10/2021 14:27

Anything hormonal really messes with me, so just condoms for us.
I'm 38, no children.

BringPizza · 07/10/2021 14:28

Mirena and vasectomy here, taking no chances Grin

cushioncovers · 07/10/2021 14:32

Being fat and old. Grin

But back in the day when I needed contraception I used condoms, then Persona, then the copper coil and then the mirena coil.

MoChridhe · 07/10/2021 14:35

Tubal ligation after DC3.

jeaux90 · 07/10/2021 14:43

Get the DH to have a vasectomy

facelessworrier · 07/10/2021 15:06

Thank you!

As I've been on the pill for so long it's not something we've really discussed until recently.

Might try the ultra thin ones and convince him to get the snip!

I had considered the coil but it does terrify me a bit!

rosesinmygarden · 07/10/2021 15:13

I had a hysterectomy!

But, before that we used condoms. After years of pills and coils not suiting me and DH not wanting a vasectomy they suited us well enough.

cricketmum84 · 07/10/2021 15:15

I had implant for a few years but it sent my hormones haywire. Switched to cerazatte (mini pill) and never looked back. I've been on it for about 8 years now, I don't have hormone induced rage moments, I don't have periods (although this isn't the same for everyone) It's fab.

JizzyJane · 07/10/2021 15:15

Oral contraception. He's says can we have sex? I tell him to fuck off

TattiePants · 07/10/2021 15:21

I'm on Depo injections which has mostly been ok. The intention was to have the implant but I was put on the mini pill for a few weeks until I could get booked in and I bled constantly. The GP suggested 6 months of Depo to make sure the bleeding settled but I've just stuck with the injections ever since. It's been over a year now and I've only had 2 periods in that time which is a big plus.

Mary46 · 07/10/2021 15:22

3rd mirena. Before that arm implant. Im 48. I dont know op what suits one may not suit everyone. Coil sore enough fitting

CJCreggforPresident · 07/10/2021 15:25

We had an unplanned pregnancy with the mini pill, then tried the rhythm method/condom combo but we hated the condoms for various reasons so tried just the rhythm. That also resulted in an unplanned pregnancy and that eventually converted my DH to thinking a vasectomy was a good plan (he'd been unenthusiastic before but I can't take estrogen, and the mirena was out for other reasons, so we'd pretty much run out of options!)

There actually aren't many good non-permanent options, is my conclusion. But the vasectomy seems to be working well if you're ready for the permanent version.

Eve81 · 07/10/2021 15:27

Copper coil. Lasts 10 years and doesn’t have the hormones.

Zitouna · 07/10/2021 15:28

I’m 36 with 2 kids and no wish for more, but can’t cope with hormonal contraception, and have v heavy periods so don’t want to risk a copper coil. I use this www.naturalcycles.com/

It’s NOT just the rhythm method - it’s licensed for use as a contraceptive. If we want to shag on a risky day we use condoms. I also used it to get pregnant- on the first go, 3 times. Guessing that I’m therefore fairly fertile - but haven’t had a single scare while on it.

Eve81 · 07/10/2021 15:29

It’s a very quick and painless procedure in my experience. I did have one that hurt a bit but even still, I’d compare it to a bad period cramp.

Zitouna · 07/10/2021 15:29

Should also say, think DH will get a vasectomy in the end. At the moment I’m happy tracking and having all the data - helps me keep an eye on my general health.

Everytime my partner wants some, I swing my FUPA around like a helicopter until he backs off

@TattiePants where do you get the depo from? I'm having similar constant bleeding with the mini-pill so looking at alternatives. Thanks
