For applying for a jr role when rejected for the sr one in the same company?

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 10:25

So I applied for a senior role (potentially by mistake as I didn't realise there was a more junior position available). There's this junior role available too, but I'm sure it's the same hiring manager, so maybe a waste of time?

I applied and interviewed for a senior role, not realising they were advertising it to allow for an internal applicant.

I didn’t get the senior one, but they said I impressed so did I want the junior one. I didn’t have to interview for the junior one, but just had a chat with the hiring manager (senior guy who got the role) instead.

What’s the closing date for both? If you don’t hear from a recruiter about the senior one, apply for the junior.

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 10:34

They don't have closing dates but I have already been rejected for the senior one (via email and quite quickly).

Well I would apply for the junior role then, you have nothing to lose

Bells3032 · 07/10/2021 10:38

Nothing to lose as long as you are happy with the t&cs of the junior roles. i've applied for different grades on the same team before. think it shows you really want to work for that company. plus they probably won't remember your application anyway.

Though if you got a rejection very quickly i recommend getting someone to look at your CV first...might have been you don't have the right experience but you may have been rejected off the bat due to a typo or other error in your application. better to make sure

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 10:40

Is 48hrs considered too quickly? I don't think I read it properly if I'm honest, but I never know anymore!

OP posts:
TheWoleb · 07/10/2021 10:43

Did they give any feedback with your rejection for the senior role? If they said something along the lines of experience not being enough then go for the junior role. If they said you're not a good fit for the company then dont.

If they haven't said anything, then apply. You never know and you're not going to lose anything!

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 10:50

They said "while your skills are certain impressive, at this point in our company's growth we're looking for a very specific set of experiences and skills with this role". I don't want to read too much into it, but I think it means I genuinely don't have the experience they're looking for?

OP posts:
EileenGC · 07/10/2021 10:53

Is the experience required for the senior role different than the one for the junior position? I’d apply if the answer was yes and you had the experience they ask for the junior role.

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 11:00

After reading both job specs they're exactly the same, so maybe it's a no!

OP posts:
DemocracyofHypocrisy · 07/10/2021 11:00

It’s not necessarily a waste of time. At my previous work (local authority) a woman did the same and was employed for the junior role.

The feedback you got was probably a generic email so I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Alliolly · 07/10/2021 11:14

I would apply.
Mine and my deputy manager's job description are almost the same as it is assumed the DP will be running the business the same way in my absence. But in reality our workloads and responsibilities are quite different and more importantly in your case the junior position requires less experience

GreyhoundG1rl · 07/10/2021 11:14

Agree with the generic email. Go for it, op 👍

girlmom21 · 07/10/2021 11:16

I'd apply for it.

DespairingHomeowner · 07/10/2021 13:09

Its not a waste of time at all - it could even be that the junior role has been vacated by the person who has secured the senior role!

Apply so that your CV gets seen as they may have different hiring managers. I have applied for jobs and ended up landing a different role in same team, but in the other companies you HAVE to apply in order to be considered (ie they cannot suggest it to you)

TheLongDrop · 07/10/2021 13:36

What's the line of work OP?

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 13:39

Customer Success / Account management for a SAAS company

OP posts:
curiouslypacific · 07/10/2021 13:40

Was it an automated response or from a person? If it was from a recruiter/hiring manager I'd reach out to them and ask if they'd consider you for the other role instead. No harm in asking.

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 13:46

I think it was semi automated? Definitely from a "no reply" address.

OP posts:
TheLongDrop · 07/10/2021 13:50

Ah ok. I ask as I've got a similar set up going on where I am the hiring manager.

This isn't it.

I have to say though - I don't take a great view of people applying for multiple open roles. Mainly because it looks like they are just trying to get a foot in the door vs suitable for the job. In your case though I'd try and talk to the recruiter and ask about whether the other role is worth applying for.

Also do get a trusted friend to check over CV format etc. Not suggesting yours is this - but will immediately reject a chaotically written, weirdly/ poorly formatted CV, any grammar/ spelling issues. Obviously it's role dependent on how important that is but my view is that if someone can't make their cv read well and haven't checked it or even worse noticed the errors it doesn't bode well. Even if they are typos.

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 14:02

My CV is typo free although I admit it could be a lot "leaner". It's hard to judge what to completely remove as I've worked for a huge .com but that experience (beyond being very corporate) is somewhat irrelevant to these roles. I paid someone to look at my CV and I think it was a waste of money. My CL was pretty standard and didn't give many reasons of why I've liked to work at that company. I've found the recruiter on LinkedIn. I'll send him a message and see what he says.

@Terribleluck

Customer Success / Account management for a SAAS company
So what was the initial role you applied for? If it was senior account manager, don't re-apply. If it was account director, do.
Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 14:17

"Manager of Customer Onboarding"

OP posts:
RoastChicory · 07/10/2021 14:26

I would send a personal email to the recruiting manager, saying how much you enjoyed meeting them, and on reflection, the role you applied for was too senior. Tell them that you would be happy to be considered for the other position.

I have done a lot of recruitment and have often rejected candidates for a more senior role, that we would be happy to have at a more junior level

Terribleluck · 07/10/2021 15:46

And I had another rejection, this one within 36 hours!

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 07/10/2021 16:02

Ah sorry OP. I was going to say don't reapply based on the job they rejected you from.

At least they don't keep you hanging on, I guess.

Good luck in your search.
