We're all aware of the tricks manufacturers introduce to increase their profit margins. The triangles in a Toblerone are further apart than they used to be. The nozzle in toothpaste tubes are a bit bigger because people dispense toothpaste by length rather than volume.

But - you may want to be sitting down for this - I'm pretty sure that PGTips are putting less tea in each teabag than they used to. I mean, if I'm right, this is practically a violation of human rights. Is nothing sacred?

If you have any unused teabags purchased, say, a year ago, please empty one into a teaspoon and post a picture, and I'll make a comparison with the miserly content of a recent teabag.

Believe me, it's a scandal. This could go all the way to the top. It makes you wonder what other underhand strategies are being deployed to rob us...

5 curly wurlys in a pack Instead of 6. AND I'm convinced they're smaller ......

lollipoprainbow · 06/10/2021 18:40

Fruit and fibre cereal used to have candied bananas in and flakes of coconut now they don't seem to ! It's just bran flakes and a few raisins very disappointing !!

alligatorpeardrop · 06/10/2021 18:53

Tesco own brand fruit & fibre has all the flakes & bits and it's less than half the price Wink

Bacon rashers are like tissue paper now - still 12 in a pack, but so thin you can read the paper through them.

They are better that way. Much healthier and go nice and crispy in the grill.

A few years ago I think Cadbury tried to promote a new "diet" chocolate bar with 99 calories in it. I'm pretty sure it was basically dairy milk in whatever weight made the bar 99 calories, but the same price as a normal dairy milk!Hmm

And don't get me started on freddos!🤣

FangsForTheMemory · 06/10/2021 19:20

I ate a bagful of Flying Saucers recently.

It was 'hunt the sherbet'.

WTF has happened to them?

FangsForTheMemory · 06/10/2021 19:24

@beinglikedisoverrated Last year I had my first Curly Wurly in years and didn't recognise it. It's about a third the thickness, and shorter.

Nah, your hands are bigger!

The chewiness is another matter though.

beinglikedisoverrated · 06/10/2021 20:56

Not even going to mention Wagon Wheels!

SafeMove · 06/10/2021 21:05

It is pretty much everything. Clothes - they skimp on fabric (my DP is a sewer). Even pillows and quilts, they skimp on the filling now.

Tins of soup getting smaller. Packs of biscuits. Mozarella balls. Crackers. Anything to maximise those profit margins.

Yeah, I've noticed that my normal sizes seem much smaller now that I'm getting older! Shock

PinkiOcelot · 06/10/2021 21:40

I’m not normally keen on PG tips as it was always too strong for me. I’d probably like it now.
I like Aldi teabags. The ones in the beige brown box.
I think everything is smaller these days.

WildfirePonie · 06/10/2021 21:48

I have a box of 200 PG tips.. maybe 1 or 2 years old, date on the bottom is 04/2020.

I measured one tea bag as 1/2TBS

MintyGreenDream · 06/10/2021 21:49

Jim Royle's about the same size as he was though.

I put 2 spoons of coffee in my coffee just for it to taste like coffee these days!

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/10/2021 00:39

It is indeed shrinkflation. As costs go up, companies have two choices to keep a profit margin, increase price or decrease size of the product.

Cocoa costs have gone up 25% in last five years, that is why chocolate bars have been decreased in size but the price kept the same. It’s not about making more profit, but making any profit. You can expect it to continue as there is a fungal disease ravaging the Ivory Coast is is expected to cause next year’s crop to be 11% smaller, despite demand increasing by 5%.

Tea too has been increasing in costs. It reached an all time high in 2020 and has increased by 3.4% so far this year. It is projected to increase in cost by ~30% in the next 12months.

They are. They were 118 calories each, the smaller ones are 97 calories.
Idontlike · 07/10/2021 16:12

@CocoHeart which brand? Nescafe is now so weak I’m at 2.5 (heaped) teaspoons per cup. PP has said Tesco Gold is also weaker than it used to be.

I need to find a coffee I can taste so, if you have a different one that’s weaker, do tell so I can avoid that one too.

CocoHeart · 07/10/2021 19:01

I'm a Kenco girl but still have to double it up but I think it's stronger than Nescafé.

DerAlteMann · 07/10/2021 20:36

Waitrose sausages are abut 40% of the size they used to be.
