We're all aware of the tricks manufacturers introduce to increase their profit margins. The triangles in a Toblerone are further apart than they used to be. The nozzle in toothpaste tubes are a bit bigger because people dispense toothpaste by length rather than volume.

But - you may want to be sitting down for this - I'm pretty sure that PGTips are putting less tea in each teabag than they used to. I mean, if I'm right, this is practically a violation of human rights. Is nothing sacred?

If you have any unused teabags purchased, say, a year ago, please empty one into a teaspoon and post a picture, and I'll make a comparison with the miserly content of a recent teabag.

Believe me, it's a scandal. This could go all the way to the top. It makes you wonder what other underhand strategies are being deployed to rob us...

It has been going on for some time. Used to be a shelf stacker (replenishment operative!) and we had to check barcode, weight etc while filling shelves. Pizzas were an early casualty I believe but by no means the only one

GermioneHranger · 06/10/2021 15:11

I have thought my last box of PG tips was dodgy as the tea hasn't been as good.....maybe this was the reason?!

Fuming. The toblerone spacing change caused many a hard feeling in this household.

Jeremyspoke · 06/10/2021 15:14

I switched from PG to Tetley months ago for this very reason. I drink my tea strong, black and brewed in a pot and the PG had definitely got weaker, less tea per bag would make sense. Still happy with the Tetley though, haven't noticed a change in that since I switched,

JovialNickname · 06/10/2021 15:17

Could you maybe use two tea bags?

Quietly goes and gets coat

Thymeout · 06/10/2021 15:24

Check out the size of bottles and jars. I bought a replacement for a bottle of Sarson's malt vinegar the other day while there were still a few shakes in the old one. Must have been 25% smaller. Ditto jam jars.

Idontlike · 06/10/2021 15:45

Nescafe are doing something to their coffee too.

I now have to have 2.5 teaspoons in a mug to even be able to taste it these days.

SquirrelFan · 06/10/2021 15:53

I have a box that's over 6 months old...emptied a bag into a measuring spoon and it's just under 3/4 of a tablespoon. Hopefully picture attached. Any help?

@Dogmum40

Tubs of Christmas chocolates drive me nuts! I have a sweet tooth, They have either employed the grinch or they are all thieving Christmas bastards!

Every company do it for every product! I believe the term is shrinkflation but thieving bastards works for me

Remember last year or before after people complained about Quality Street Advent having too many triangles, so they made the first 5 day ALL triangles? Grin
Thebookswereherfriends · 06/10/2021 15:56

I’m sure I saw a clip from This morning about this very subject. Didn’t watch it all, but they had a table of things which had clearly been changed in some way.

isthismylifenow · 06/10/2021 15:57

@RicherThanYew

Not to be goady but 5 creme eggs anyone? The bastards.
Oh no. This is just wrong.
FatFredsFriedEgg · 06/10/2021 16:00

I've just noticed today that the large size of my usual instant coffee has shrunk from 200g to 190g. So the quick mental arithmetic of whether two small ones on special offer are a better deal than one large one doesn't work anymore.

ClawedButler · 06/10/2021 16:01

IT IS THE END OF DAYS

We Brits are a fairly stoic lot, but when they come for our teabags we shall not go quietly into the night!!*

*unless it's decaf

Sockofthefall · 06/10/2021 16:11

I have changed to Williamson’s teas. The Earl Grey & Breakfast tea are just lovely & delicious 😊.

Tired of drinking tea that was tasteless. I’m sure they have reduced the quality of the tea in the bags 😳

I use tesco gold coffee and have found the same recently.

I do this otherwise it tastes rubbish.
Idontlike · 06/10/2021 16:32

That’s interesting ladygindiva I’ve been wondering what brand to try instead, I will avoid the Tesco one!

Somethingsnappy · 06/10/2021 16:45

I've been wondering why I've recently been finding it easier to break a piece of Toblerone off, even after it has been in the fridge..... That is very sneaky. So we're literally paying for air Shock

GTAlogic · 06/10/2021 16:48

Loose tea ftw

Blossomtoes · 06/10/2021 16:50

@WalkingOnTheCracks, you need to get your tea from Fortnum, dahling, no shrinkage there!

alligatorpeardrop · 06/10/2021 16:51

I'm convinced wine bottles are smaller nowadays.

InPatagonia · 06/10/2021 16:55

Tassimo Costa pods are now 12 in a pack rather than 16. Cheeky bastards. I’ve just bought a different type of coffee, they can get to fuck.

DroopyClematis · 06/10/2021 16:59

Yes @alligatorpeardrop and it's wetter too! It goes down my gullet a lot more quickly than it used to so I need more of it!

With regard to 'the thieving tea bastards,' I have noticed a lot more dust left in the packets of late and I have to spend longer mashing my bags as I've noticed that the colour is paler after I've added my milk.

WeatherwaxLives · 06/10/2021 17:19

We keep our Christmas baubles in old roses tins. We have a few from when we were kids - they're over twice the bloody size of today's tins!

A place I worked had a canteen managed by an outside catering company. They were only allowed to put the prices up every 12 months. But every year, without fail, 6 months after the price rise they would reduce the portion sizes. People would complain, there would be faffing about and denials and 'misunderstandings' - all delaying tactics until it was time for the price rise, and then portion sizes would go back up along with the price. Every bloody year.

Although to be fair I've just checked online and it's £3.00 for the 100g and £8.49 for the 190g. Shock Hmm

Last time it was (I think) £4.00 for 100g and (definitely because I bought 4 of them!) £4.50 for 190g.

Asda rollbacks indeed. Maybe they're just trying to make the stupid price differentials obvious for people who can't multiply by 0.52631578947 in their heads.

PurplePinecone · 06/10/2021 18:03

I did think Pg tips was taking longer to brew and was a bit weak last time I had one. Jokes on them, decided to switch to Tetley!
