To ask if you can get a quiet boiler?

Boiler is in a cupboard in DD room. She complains everytime it's on that it makes loud noises. It's 12 years old so not that old (or is that old???).

It's driving us nuts all her complaining.

Can you get a quiet boiler? Does our boiler need replacing? Can I come live with you?

Do you get it serviced? Some can get noisy when they have a build-up of crap or other stuff that a service might sort. Ours is pretty quiet - it's in our utility and you can't hear it with door closed and barely with it open. If you're in the same room you can hear it fire up, but it's not particularly loud. It's a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar I think.

Poor DD. My boiler isn't old but it's in the garage and my bedroom is directly above it. It is pretty annoying when it fires up when I'm trying to sleep. Please sort it for the poor girl!😬

Oh I feel awful now.

Would a new one make a difference or do I need to move it?

Been serviced and working fine but think it's time to be replaced

Can you describe the noises it makes?

goingslowfornow · 05/10/2021 19:14

It's when it fires up. Just loud.

I'm researching and think I need to move away from gas anyway. Maybe electric is the way forward.

I got a new one last year and it's noticeably quieter than the 12 year old one it replaced. The old one you could hear firing up two rooms away, the new one you have to stand right next to it to hear if it's fired up or not.

Ok, difficult to diagnose from that. I would totally recommend electric heating though from a noise point of view, very quiet.

Our boiler is quiet. It’s in an outbuilding.

MakeItRain · 05/10/2021 19:23

I recently got a new boiler to replace my 10 year old one. I keep thinking it's not working because it's so quiet! The last one I could hear from every room in the house!

Envoitrevisage · 05/10/2021 19:24

Our boiler is external, so it’s both silent inside and not in the way….

BlowDryRat · 05/10/2021 19:28

We replaced our 11yo boiler last month. The old one rumbled and squeaked but today I had to check if the heating was on because the new one is virtually silent. It's a Worcester Bosch 4000-something. We got it through Boxt and recommend them if you do decide to replace. The chap who fitted it said he was glad we got the 4000 and not the 2000 because apparently the 2000 range is made in a different factory where the quality isn't as good.

Comedycook · 05/10/2021 19:30

We have a newish boiler...it's in the kitchen. It's not quiet...

Research says this is the boiler if sticking with gas

These days, i agree, my parents still have the original boiler that was in the house when ut was built in tbe 1960,s😲
MyPatronusIsACat · 05/10/2021 19:34

12 years old is the age where it will be bangy and poppy sorry @goingslowfornow

Ours is fine, but is nearly 9 years old, so we ain't got long til it starts!

Don't let your energy provider try and bully you into a system flush. It's a con. and a rip off, and will not make the issue go away. It can make things worse actually!

MrsMonkeyBear · 05/10/2021 19:34

We only had our boiler fitted this year and due to the layout of our house, it had to go into the main bedroom.

It's pretty quiet when it's on for heating but when DH someone decides to run a bath at 10pm it can be loud. It has a sticker on it that says 46Db and considering that quieter that my children arguing, I'll put up with the noise.

Clovacloud · 05/10/2021 19:36

We have a Valiant which is about 6 years old and that’s really quiet in comparison to our old one. But it’s in an airing cupboard so doesn’t bother anyone. We did stay in a holiday cottage recently that had one in a bedroom and it was horrendous, woke us up every morning at 5am.

Also if it’s in a bedroom, make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in the room too. Personally I’d move it, our plumber last time said the loft is becoming quite a common place to put them.

If you look at heat pumps, make sure your house is really well insulated. FIL has one and it’s ok, but not great.

MurielSpriggs · 05/10/2021 19:36

There's talk that new gas boilers will be banned before long. When they need replacing you'll have to get an electric "heat pump" boiler, which will cost about three times as much to buy, and in nearly every case will also require complete replacement of all the pipework and radiators, with all the expense and upheaval that involves.

So get yourself as reliable a gas boiler as you can while you can, and keep it going as long as possible!

Bagelsandbrie · 05/10/2021 19:38

Hmm. I don’t think 12 years is necessarily that old for a boiler that is regularly serviced. Some can last 20 plus years, even newer models. But it’s never really good to have a boiler in a bedroom - fumes etc and noise. I’d look into moving it somewhere else if you can afford to. You can even get boilers which are outdoor ones, we had one put in in our old house and it was brilliant. No one ever heard it!

Really? We got our working but inefficient boiler replaced a few weeks ago and it was over 20 years old
starfishmummy · 05/10/2021 19:42

Ours is newish and noisy!!!

Same! I would not want to share a room with it, for sure.

It is also in its twilight years; had its gas valve and PCB replaced though so hoping it will survive another couple of years and then we’re looking at more radical options

goingslowfornow · 05/10/2021 19:44

I'm wondering if I should just get moved?

Maybe that will help.
