Words that other adults use that irritate you?

Some examples that seem to irritate me (yes I know it’s totally irrational!).

First is someone calling the tumble dryer ‘the tumblee’ (written phonetically to explain how they pronounce it). Second is ‘homee’ rather than home. I know there is no reason for these to give me the rage but they do.

AIBU to feel irrationally annoyed? What words that other adults use give you the rage?

@Somethingsnappy You've set me off again 😂 I think it's when someone is eating something I'm not sure. But I can imagine someone I know writing a status saying "can't wait for this roast beef nom nom" and I just can't stop laughing it's such a random thing to say. Reminds me of pac man just going around the board munching Grin.

Smashingspinster · 05/10/2021 17:23

Hospickle rather than hospital. Pacifically rather than specifically.

redfuchsia · 05/10/2021 17:34

saying 'I have the sniffles' (instead of 'I have a cold')

Retired65 · 05/10/2021 17:37

The word 'guys' to address women and groups of children.

Definitelynotabondgirl · 05/10/2021 17:38

Doggo. (Genuinely enrages me.)

Margerine78 · 05/10/2021 17:41

Any grown adult that calls their holiday 'holibobs' or their parents 'the parentals' needs to be slapped hard.

Chig26 · 05/10/2021 17:43

‘These ones’, ugh, not necessary, these or those is sufficient.

I totally forgot to add these to my list...all the above can sod off too. Also, people around my area say "bless" a lot. "Bless her" if someone does something silly for example, it's weird. Is everyone religious or just really patronising here?
SilverOtter · 05/10/2021 17:46

@IamtheDevilsAvocado that little example piece of dialogue you've written doesn't give me the rage at all.

It's a VERY specific red mist trigger for me - purely that smug, self-satisfied, twatty "no?"😂

Cosyblankets · 05/10/2021 17:54

@Notjustanymum

“Can I get a lartay?” No. It’s “May/can I have a latte?” (Latte pronounced la-Tay, and have, not get!) How should chorizo and bruschetta be pronounced? I’m curious as I’ve only heard choritzo and brooshetta so far (but then, I’ve never ordered either in Spain or Italy)...
Chorizo is pronounced choreetho and bruschetta is pronounced brusketta

@TDogsInHats

There's another thread on the go about a young woman who lives with her mum and makes soups. The word soups is now banned. Also people who pronounce aitch as Haitch. It starts with the letter A, NOT H !
I have SO MANY ARGUMENTS about this. It drives me mad. It is AITCH - we don’t say “Lell” for the letter L do we? FFS!
Foxlover46 · 05/10/2021 17:59

@Flossieskeeper my daughters old school head teacher did this , "hello mum " every single time and to the other mums too !!

AnnieSnap · 05/10/2021 17:59

I clench my teeth at the expression “a big ask”. Currently commenters are saying that to review the conduct of all Police officers is a big ask. No, it would be challenging. Other things may be demanding, exacting, taxing or difficult, but they are not a big ask!

Foxlover46 · 05/10/2021 18:00

@Margerine78 I said bless to a elderly lady once and she said to me ... "are you a vicar then? "
Never said it since happy to say !!

LaikO · 05/10/2021 18:02

Drinky poos
Mummy friends
Croissant pronounced as "cross-ont"
Chorizo pronounced as "chor-itz-oh"

I've heard all of those far too often.

Ha! Old people are savage. To be honest, I think that one annoys me as I hate the town I'm from and it's only there I hear people saying it.

cherish123 · 05/10/2021 18:06

I've seen loads on here I hate plus others:

Nom (hadn't heard that but sounds horrendous)
Holibob for holiday (?)
Date for when you are going out with spouse for dinner. You can't "date" someone you live with.
Well jel - for very jealous
This one- eg - dinner with this one (just put their name)
Punching above my weight (often you're not or fishing for compliments)
Verbs created from nouns- gifted etc

HaveringWavering · 05/10/2021 18:07

@Notjustanymum it’s also fine to say “Choreesso” as well as choreetho because many Spanish speakers do not lisp the “z”, especially Latin Americans. Chorizo is big in Argentina, which is a non-lisping accent/dialect.

Thecazelets · 05/10/2021 18:09

'Myself' when the meaning is 'me' or 'I'. As in 'My wife and myself' or 'He contacted myself'.

Also 'reached out' when the meaning is 'contacted'.

'Sourced' for bought.

And the ubiquitous 'incredibly' when the meaning is 'quite' or 'very'.

Read that again - no thanks I read it right the first time! (On Facebook posts)

Yummy and nom for food.

HeresOne · 05/10/2021 18:24

Till being used in place of until. I don't know when this became acceptable. The shortened version is 'til. A till is a cash register!

Also, my one(s). Just say mine.
