AIBU to ask if anyone has a part time and full time job?

Things have changed recently here and despite being a 2 income household we are back to the merry go round that is living month to month.

Despite having a reasonable job and my partner also having the same we have little spare each month.

With Christmas and birthdays coming up, I am becoming increasingly worried about not having a safety net.

I have tried unsuccessfully to find a part time evening/weekend role but people are claiming I am either too qualified or they don't trust that I am committed to the role.

Has anyone managed this? How?

No but I’m a nurse and just work for an agency. I regularly work between 7-12 extra hours a week.
I think it depends what kind of work you are looking for. Maybe change what type of extra work you apply for

PinkiOcelot · 04/10/2021 18:22

No I haven’t. However, have you tried the supermarkets? Our local Tesco was advertising for nighttime staff this week. Good luck.

Bburago · 04/10/2021 18:24

Yes, used to work full time in an office and then had a bar job 2 days a week and prt time retail work every weekend (6 hours a day sat and sun).

Was always busy and tired but needed the cash so had to find a way.

All big retailers will be taking on staff now

Jangle33 · 04/10/2021 18:24

Good luck! Is it just the general cost of living or do you live in a v expensive area?

Coasterfan · 04/10/2021 18:28

Have a look at the make £10 a day thread on the money matters board. It’s not just £10 a day suggestions, I paid DDs private school fees, £1100 a month for a year off the suggestions on that thread! A lot of it can be done from home too, it saved my finances in 2019!!

FellInLoveWithABanana · 04/10/2021 18:28

Side hustles!

PooWillyNameChange · 04/10/2021 18:29

Sort of. I have a full time job and a "side gig". The freelance stuff pays better than my FT job and I enjoy it but it's only about 2-3 afternoons a month (I take annual leave or work flexibly so do a loooong day).

If you both earn good incomes though are you sure you don't have a spending issue rather than an income one?

lindjam · 04/10/2021 18:30

YANBU

When I had to kick violent XH out, I had four jobs!!

Three were sort of intertwined/related, and the fourth was a side hustle.

Keep trying Flowers

PooWillyNameChange · 04/10/2021 18:33

Sorry just re read that your circumstances have changed. Perhaps also do a spending audit. Check all direct debits, see if you're on cheapest tariffs etc

caravanman · 04/10/2021 18:38

Yes,
I have had two (or more) jobs simultaneously for some time. It is hard work, but there is something comforting about not having your eggs all in one basket as well.

I have found though, that I have a tendency to spend more when I earn more, so you might have to watch that.

KingdomScrolls · 04/10/2021 18:39

DH and I did for years, both had jobs working in the public sector/MOJ and second jobs on zero yours in a similar field. It's really common in justice services because the pay isn't good. DH still runs community service groups occasionally for extra cash

NotMyCat · 04/10/2021 18:40

I did yes, PT job as a carer and a side gig of matched betting

Saladd0dger · 04/10/2021 18:42

Tesco want festive colleagues. You may get to pick your hours depending on department

polkadotpixie · 04/10/2021 18:51

Yes, I worked FT Mon-Fri in admin and Saturday in a shop for 5 years. My PT job was only minimum wage but between that and my FT job I managed to save up enough to pay for my wedding (£6K), house deposit (£6K), car (£3K) and savings for maternity leave (£4K)...it really adds up 😊

Hannahthepink · 04/10/2021 18:51

I personally don't, but I know a couple of people I work with who do. We work 4am-8am online shopping in a supermarket, then a couple of people go on to their full time jobs. It must be knackering, but technically feasible if needs must. All supermarkets are constantly desperate for these staff, so should be easy to get in.

Keladrythesaviour · 04/10/2021 18:52

I don't, but a lot of my colleagues do. We are in a warehouse style facility. As we work the later shift (2-10) lots of colleagues do cleaning jobs in the morning, or some do hotel/bar work at the weekend. It tends to be quite normal in the Polish and Goan communities round here.

ImInStealthMode · 04/10/2021 18:54

I haven't at the moment but I've often had 2 jobs. Hospitality are crying out for staff and I've never heard anyone be told they're over qualified. Could you get some evening / weekend restaurant or bar work?

patrickbatemansbusinesscard · 04/10/2021 18:59

Yip, just very recently. I work full time in admin and part time in retail.

It's going to be hard going but need to get some savings behind me again and don't want to fall into debt.

Best of luck Smile

unluckyinlife · 04/10/2021 18:59

For context I manage a manage a small company, admin, invoicing, staffing etc x

VaguelyInteresting · 04/10/2021 19:00

Yep.

Work full time in a creative role in a media related industry, and do some strategy consulting on the side for a charitable org. Both employers aware and happy... I’m just bloody knackered all the time!

unluckyinlife · 04/10/2021 19:01

I tried the tescos festive jobs but wasn't shortlisted! Confused I honestly think I must be doing something wrong

I live in Greater London, my rent is about 1450 per month. The cost of living is high, but due to my MH and childcare I'm feeling a bit stuck.

I suffer with anxiety triggered by driving, so a long commute wouldn't be possible for me at the moment. x

Bedsheets4knickers · 04/10/2021 19:07

I'm work 2 jobs right now as we are saving for a mortgage . Def look at supermarkets as they are hiring now for Xmas period .

VaguelyInteresting · 04/10/2021 19:08

@unluckyinlife

Have you thought about a flexible remote admin role? They do exist- just got to find them

patrickbatemansbusinesscard · 04/10/2021 19:11

I noticed when I was looking that there was a number of remote call centre type roles available, something like that?
