To ask for a hand hold

My 11 month old is in hospital with a severe infection, and they are looking for sepsis too they said. She's started her IV antibiotics but she's restless and groaning in her sleep. Her temp is spiking again.

I'm so worried about her, I can't sleep at all, even though the nurses are being great and all the monitors are keeping an eye on her. Sepsis is such a scary word.

Goodness I hope she is doing ok.Thanks

yeahitsabadidea · 04/10/2021 12:59

Just checking back in for another hand hold.

I know it's hard to see right now but it sounds all positive. You're in the right place.

Try to get a moment for yourself. Just some deep breaths. Look out of the window at the clouds. A cup of tea. Whatever you need to bring you back to you.

You're doing amazing. Thinking of you both Thanks

Vispa · 04/10/2021 15:25

Sounds like things are going in the right direction, really hope your baby keeps improving and that you are coping ok Flowers x

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 04/10/2021 17:09

Big non mumsnet hugs, hope you’re back home. Always better to err on caution with little ones.

YukoandHiro · 04/10/2021 20:41

We're still in, waiting for results on some of the bloods and still getting IV antibiotics. Temp was down after ibuprofen this afternoon but feels like it's rising again now unfortunately. Will see what this evening brings.

I've barely eaten today as we moved wards and they messed up the food order to the room. I've been breastfeeding on demand and I'm absolutely starving. I should have said something before now but didn't really realise as just been so busy keeping her fed and settled....

Handhold here OP - can you see if the on site facilities are open to get a little something to eat? I'm assuming it's a bit late to ask DH to drop something in? I'd mention it to the staff they may be able to help Thanks

YukoandHiro · 04/10/2021 20:55

DH came in earlier and brought a pasta salad and some biscuits so I did eat earlier today, and I've got a bag of crisps and a banana to get me through the evening. Unfortunately he can't pop back as we have an older DD so he's at home with her.

I've mentioned it to the nurse. Maybe they'll let me have some breakfast cornflakes now.

Vispa · 04/10/2021 21:18

Hi OP, when in was in hospital with my baby, the hospital policy was that breastfeeding mums always got offered food at mealtimes on the ward. At the very least they should give you some toast/cornflakes if you've missed a meal. Could your OH order you some food to be delivered to the hospital..? Staying on the ward with your child is such hard work and really exhausting and uncomfortable... Really hope you can get some food/rest and your baby is doing ok Flowers Sending another handhold x

gah2teenagers · 04/10/2021 22:47

Pleas ask for some food. They will help if you ask but generally it gets overlooked really easily. Hope your LO bounces back quickly.

mommybear1 · 05/10/2021 13:56

@YukoandHiro how are you today? Hope things are improving and you have managed to eat.

YukoandHiro · 05/10/2021 21:40

I feel like I'm having a breakdown. Been released from hospital as she's improving but with a cannula still in to deliver the rest of the Iv at home. Can't get her to sleep at all as she likes sleeping on her stomach but the iV is in her arm and it's splinted to keep it in place so she just cries every time she rolls. Eldest age 4 is constantly wailing and won't sleep without me coming into her room but I can't get in there without the baby getting more upset. DH works shifts and can't help as he's at work.
The nurses coming tomorrow we're supposed to send a number to call if we had any problems between 8am and 10pm and they haven't done so. I haven't slept or eaten properly in five days and I have a massive work deadline tomorrow I can't miss (self employed).
And also I'm having a breast cancer scare and have my date just through for my scans - it's next week. I honestly feel like I'm
Going to crumble in the next few days

The good news is baby is improving really well on the antibiotics but it was urosepsis. I had no idea she had a uti or that it could get so serious so quickly. Does anyone know what I could have done to prevent it?

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 05/10/2021 22:00

There is nothing you can do to prevent a UTI. DD used to get them as a baby, and ended up in hospital on several occasions. It was frightening the way she went downhill so quickly, and reassuring that she recovered just as quickly.

After her second UTI the GP referred her for tests where they discovered that she had bladder reflux. If this happens again you need to insist that this gets investigated. She was then put on a prophylactic dose of antibiotics for a few years until she grew out of the reflux.

UTIs are more common in girls apparently.

I hope she makes a complete recovery very soon. I know how frightening it is when they are so ill Flowers

YukoandHiro · 05/10/2021 22:32

Thanks @RampantIvy that's useful intel, I'll bear it in mind.

These babies are sent to scare us half to death.

I hope your ok op sending you big hugs xx

BergamotandLime · 05/10/2021 23:44

There is absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent it. I'm sorry things are so tough. I've been almost exactly in your situation with DD who is now 8. They will likely do an ultrasound to see if she has any uro abnormalities such as duplex kidney which cause UTIs, but for now she's getting the meds she needs. Can you all pile into bed together to try and get some sleep?

YukoandHiro · 06/10/2021 02:25

Thanks @BergamotandLime - did the happen multiple times for your daughter? They didn't mention any of this when we left but the also we're actually not discharged from the team yet as they're still doing the antibiotics for the next few days, so maybe be they will.

OP posts:
slapmyarseandcallmemary · 06/10/2021 02:44

Hope she's on the mend soon 💐

BergamotandLime · 06/10/2021 06:18

Never as badly as the first time. There were a couple of occasions where she needed antibiotics again and she had surgery about a year later for duplex kidney though when they went in it ended up being a rare non-malignant infected growth. Since then though she's been absolutely fine and we were discharged from the uro team a couple of months ago.

I hope you've managed to get some sleep tonight?

YukoandHiro · 06/10/2021 20:39

Just a little update - she's more tired than normal and off solids, but the nurses came to the house this afternoon and are pleased with her progress. They couldn't grow any bacteria on the blood so they're happy it didn't progress to true septicaemia. One more IV to go tomorrow and then she's done. Fingers crossed she's turned a corner now🥲

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 07/10/2021 19:29

To anyone following this, DD was finally discharged from nursing care today. She looks so much better although is still having more naps than usual and more bf than solids, but she's fully on the mend. I'm so pleased! What a week...

OP posts:
SpringSparrow · 07/10/2021 19:34

Aw so pleased she’s doing so much better. I hope you have managed to get some sleep and are feeling better yourself.

BergamotandLime · 07/10/2021 20:21

Oh so pleased to hear this 🥰

mbosnz · 07/10/2021 20:25

Just to add, my girls were investigated for reflux, due to a family history of kidney problems. They were both put on propylactic (sp) antibiotics until the age of five.

Poor wee lass, and poor you! So scary.

QuestionNumberOne · 07/10/2021 22:23
