Asda driver knocked over my wall

katemuff · 03/10/2021 18:08

I had an Asda delivery on Tuesday. When he left the driver reversed into a drystone wall and destroyed it (not easy to do!) DH ran out to see him driving off. We have the cctv showing him hitting the wall, looking backwards out the window at the damage and then driving off. DH and dd moved out sheep onto another field.
I call wed, thurs, fri and sat to request a call back/email/insurance details and everyone promised me a response 'before the end of the day' but I've heard nothing.
I need to put the sheep back as we're bringing a ram in this week and we need to separate the flocks. Is it unreasonable to expect a response by now?
I'll have to get the wall fixed and reclaim the money, can they insist I wait for the wall to be viewed/fixed by their own contractor?
I'm so frustrated!

Another person wondering why you aren't calling your own insurers in the first instance...? You shouldn't need to deal with the admin of this, of which there will be tons

I work in a supermarket and tbf first thing in a morning and lunchtime are the busiest times for the home shopping department as that's usually the shift start/changeover times.

Who are you calling when you call Asda? Is it Asda House or the store your shopping is delivered from? If it is AH then they will be promising to call back because they need to speak to the Home Shopping manager at the store first before getting back to you and if the HSM doesn't have the information then they will also have to talk to the driver (who may be out on a run or not on shift so isn't immediately contactable) which causes delays. Though they should have called back to keep you updated on the progress the central call centres rarely do.

If the repair is less than £500 then it will usually be dealt with at the store level so while you are waiting I would get a quote from a registered tradesman who can rebuild your wall (ideally a couple if there is more than one company locally that can do the job). If they don't call back then I would call one last time and ask to speak to the GSM and arrange a time to come into the store and bring the quotes, CCTV images and pictures of the damage.

It is a pain and you shouldn't have to go in but when you're on the phone it is so much easier for them to fob you off because there are more pressing things happening in front of them in store (or is often the case, the call is answered at the Customer Service desk and the HSM fobs the colleague off when they try to get hold of them to deal with a customer complaint and so the CSD colleague has to try and play peacemaker)

Here are Dot and Jackie. Super pissed off as you can see 😂😂
They were looking forward to a hot young ram visitation and now they're stuck in a paddock....

OP I have the same thing at least 3 times a year when drivers (not necessarily Asda drivers) come off the road and through one of our (works) walls. We use temporary fencing to stockproof the field whilst we sort out insurance claims and repair. The hole in question cant be very big, just string up a temporary repair.

Porcupineintherough · 04/10/2021 13:31

Oh theyre much cuter than ours. Which breed?

1forAll74 · 04/10/2021 13:45

Hope you have some quick action with this, especially when having to deal with your sheep.

Yes, I've bodged it with some fencing and a gate all tied together with 3 miles of bailer twine. Unfortunately eldest and most useful child selfishly left home last week for Uni so it is not as impressively bizarre as past homemade fencing. They're Ryelands - we're a small holding and they're so biddable and have great personalities. Well, the ewes do. Romeo, the friskiest shearling ram in Yorkshire is, frankly, a liability.
@QueeniesCroft - yes, a fine collection of old bits and bobs all bound securely with bailer twine Grin
The ewes are no problem but we have a very frisky shearling ram arriving imminently and that is a different story....
Ooh, you tup early down there (I'm in the Western Isles, so almost everywhere is "down!"). Tupping time here is the first week in November. Tis mostly to make lambing later, and therefore safer, but conditions here are a bit more...extreme than most places.

Newfluff · 04/10/2021 14:00

We started two weeks ago but then everything is up to us.

Some details here (though I think the CEO left recently): www.servicecomplaintreview.co.uk/complaint/asda/

FatBettyintheCoop · 04/10/2021 14:24

@BrendaBubbles

I forgot we live in a litigious works now where everything has to go through the system and be blamed on someone. Back in my day we’d just fix something and get on with it.
Ah, the good old days eh? When no-one took responsibility for causing shit to happen to other less fortunate types, just as the ASDA delivery driver in this case, did.

Yes, let’s not concern ourselves with the possibility of livestock roaming loose in the road potentially causing accidents. The daft old farmer can just stop what they’re doing and bodge a repair. Hmm

Are you offering your services free as a competent dry stone Waller then, @BrendaBubbles ?

CopperLily · 04/10/2021 14:24

I'd like to hear more about Romeo please.

queenrollo · 04/10/2021 14:40

So the driver left the scene of an accident too? Don't suppose you've reported it to the police? That'll put a rocket up ASDA's proverbial....

queenrollo · 04/10/2021 14:41

PS thank you for the sheep photos. Have brightened up my Monday afternoon immeasureably.

HuhWhatNow · 04/10/2021 14:41

Surely it's Rameo
Porcupineintherough · 04/10/2021 14:42

Off to google Ryelands, I may have sheep envy even though cattle are more my thing. Smile

@BrendaBubbles a temporary patch is one thing but they dont last, whereas a well built drystone wall is a thing of great beauty and functionality which should last 100 years bw rebuilds. The OP is perfectly entilted to expect Asda to pay to have it made good.

LongCOVID · 04/10/2021 14:55

Ok, I know everyone says "tell the police"... but
"The Road Traffic Act 1988 s 170 (2) states that it is an offence for a driver of a vehicle to fail to stop and give their details when involved in an accident that has caused either damage or injury to someone other than the driver or their vehicle."
He knocked down your wall and didn't stop or exchange details. When you tweet them about it, point that out. Their driver (who is responsible for his own driving, after all) should be doing something to sort it out.

You've fulfilled your obligations, much better 😁
3scape · 04/10/2021 15:40

Tweet / social media it. When a school boy was hit locally by an Asda van there was an online appeal by police Asda were all over sorting out various things in about 15 mins.

katemuff · 04/10/2021 22:42

@CopperLily
Well, last year he visited accompanying an older Ram, he was just a lamb and a companion whilst the Ram was settling in. On day 2 he broke out and through 2 fences, scrambling through a brook to reach, and successfully tup an ancient retired ewe who we thought was close to deaths door and had retired to a side field. We discovered this to our great surprise during lambing season but had been delighted by our old dears remarkable recovery. Bravo Romeo, that's when he earned his moniker, he's a frisky boy for sure....

Thanks katemuff. Romeo certainly sounds a handful, to put it mildly!
