So got up this morning, went into the utility to put a wash on as you do. I saw something out the corner of my eye and glanced over and saw a tail... backed out of the room and ran back in to take this photo. What the hell is this? A mouse a baby rat?!?!?! How do I get rid of It Sad

Looks like a ratShock

BrownCurlsAmberEyes · 03/10/2021 10:03

Sorry. Looks like a rat to me!

gamerchick · 03/10/2021 10:03

Spring traps.

TaraR2020 · 03/10/2021 10:03

It does look a bit rat like but cant tell from this photo as you need a better view of the ears and face to tell.

Get traps. Humane ones ideally, then you release it somewhere far away.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 03/10/2021 10:04

That's a rat, you can tell by the long tail

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:04

I did take another picture but it's not very good

Personally I'd go with the assumption that where there's one there's more. I'd move everything out if that room so that it's as empty as possible (no where to hide), then check for access and block up what I can, then make sure there are no food sources nearby with the hope that hunger will make them move on.

Humane traps as well.

FreeBritnee · 03/10/2021 10:06

Don’t know but I’m not convinced it’s anything to get particularly stressed about. Put down traps and bait them with chocolate.

Lysianthus · 03/10/2021 10:07

I never need much of an excuse to give up ironing.
But seriously, find the food source, then plug up the hole they are getting in through, then pour a very large drink.

FreeBritnee · 03/10/2021 10:07

I wouldn’t do humane traps. Just get them gone permanently.

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:11

Okay well excuse me whilst I go rip out half of my kitchen. My fridge freezer is out there so I need to make space for it in the kitchen Grin

He's so cute

Witchinthesticks · 03/10/2021 10:14

That looks very rat like to me I’m afraid.
Empty the room, look for droppings, entry holes, nesting material or food sources.

A rat can get through a hole the size of a 10p.
They are also very difficult to trap, they’re intelligent creatures and wary of new objects.

I’m afraid I would use bait. And quickly. They breed very fast!

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:17

Emptying as I type lol

We re rural , and have a business so have a pest control contractor ,he puts down boxes with poison bait in them
I would try and get some of those ( maybe the council have a list of pest control companies ?)
Don’t go down the humane route , yould be putting them out every week , the rats would think it’s a game !

WatchWait · 03/10/2021 10:17

Cut off the food supply. Do you have a cat or dog? They're quite good at keeping them away, even if they don't kill them.

greenclouds3 · 03/10/2021 10:20

Get a cat!

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:21

I have 2 dogs, I keep sending the yorkie in there to scare it out lol

Not sure why you'd think it's any different in the city. The only reason we haven't got visible rats here is that the next street along has multiple takeaway outlets and restaurants, so the pickings are better over there.

We just have the Wood Mice under the shed. And Shitehawks hunting the pigeons when there isn't enough discarded fried chicken bones on the street.

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:34

Because I live near a lot of farms and fields that have been harvested so chances are they have come from there...

My Dad had a couple of rats under his rotten decking which he is waiting to have replaced. Neighbour was throwing bird food and bread on his lawn which was encouraging them.

Bait boxes sorted them out, took a couple of weeks but he's not seen them since, he got the bloke from the council to come out.

He also says if you get mice they like Lindt chocolate. To be fair I'd get in a humane trap for Lindt chocolate 😂 no cheapo Aldi chocolate for my Dads mice 🤣🤣🤣

Orla1970 · 03/10/2021 10:43

OMG. I would literally want to move out. I remember years ago having mice and it nearly ripped me over the edge. I know it’s irrational. I would throw money at this. Get pest control in. Meticulously fill up every little hole/gap. Good luck x

Orla1970 · 03/10/2021 10:44

Tipped* ffs Grin

JupiterWeb · 03/10/2021 10:49

I just really don't want to believe that it's a Rat Sad a mouse isn't great either but rats just seem worse. This isn't even a great place for it to live! No food is left out and there are 2 dogs! Might have a break down
