I know a mum that allows her 9 year old to watch this.

I’m really interested to see how many parents are ok with this?

AIBU to be a bit shocked about this?

Yes I should mind my own business but I’d be really interested to hear others opinions

Wow! DH and I just started watching this last night, and NO WAY would we let our 10 year old DD watch it!!

Notimeforaname · 02/10/2021 17:53

No idea what it is!Grin must Google

MrsJackGrealish · 02/10/2021 17:55

I'd maybe let my 14 year old watch it (She's not interested though)

If she was young than 14 then no way would I let her.

Bagamoyo1 · 02/10/2021 17:55

My 12 year old watched it but I think 9 is too young

MrsJackGrealish · 02/10/2021 17:57

Oh, I recommend Alice in Borderland to those who enjoyed Squid Games.

Clocktopus · 02/10/2021 17:58

@Notimeforaname it's about a bunch of people in dire financial straits who are invited to play games for money, if they survive to the end then they win the cash pot (the equivalent of £22 million). The games are all children's games like Red Light, Green Light and anyone who is "out" gets literally eliminated often quite graphically. I recommend watching it and I'm hoping for a second series.

I wouldn't let a 9yo watch it although my 12yo was in the room when I watched episode one.

Clocktopus · 02/10/2021 17:58

Love Alice in Borderland.

Battle Royale too has similar themes.

thenightsky · 02/10/2021 18:03

I enjoyed it, but found it very cruel and brutal. I'm a huge horror film and have seen worse, but Squid Game shocked me - especially the first episode. Having said that, I enjoyed it enough to watch the whole season.

I wouldn't want to watch with my child, unless they were over 18 and enjoyed previous horror films.

ColourHex · 02/10/2021 18:04

I'm pretty relaxed with this sort of thing but 9 is too young

Lucked · 02/10/2021 18:06

I am shocked as it is not just the theme but the full on gore.

No not something I would consider as my 9 year old who gets very scared and upset even by some PG films, he managed the Harry potters but only because we had read the books together. Not even asked about marvel etc. He said the recent Dogtanian film was one of the best he has seen - that is his level.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/10/2021 18:06

Also pretty relaxed about stuff like this but 9 is too young. There are sex scenes as well as violence. I let my 8 year old watch some tamer "horror" films like Gremlins and Jaws but would not allow Squid Games.

SuperstoreFan · 02/10/2021 18:07

Nope, nine is far too young.

Kljnmw3459 · 02/10/2021 18:07

None of the 9 year olds I know would be able to handle it I don't think.

SheABitSpicyToday · 02/10/2021 18:10

I would’ve watched it at 9 but I wouldn’t let my daughter watch it at 9!

LST · 02/10/2021 18:12

No I wouldn't and I'm pretty relaxed about age ratings.

freshcarnation · 02/10/2021 18:12

No way

Poppetts1234 · 02/10/2021 18:12

I glad to hear this everyone!

I told the mother I was horrified but she laughed at me and told me all the kids watch it. She told me her boy has watched worse than squid games and finds it funny so it’s ok for him to watch it!

I feel guilty allowing my child to watch the simpsons sometimes which isn’t always suitable but most adult jokes go over her head

Soubriquet · 02/10/2021 18:12

Christ I would not let a 9 year old watch this. It had me Shock and it would traumatise most kids

Poppetts1234 · 02/10/2021 18:13

@SheABitSpicyToday

I would’ve watched it at 9 but I wouldn’t let my daughter watch it at 9!
Did your parents allow you to watch this sort of thing? Or did you watch stuff without them knowing?

Bagelsandbrie · 02/10/2021 18:14

There is NO WAY a child should be watching this.

Dh and I are watching it and enjoying it and were fairly laid back when it comes to letting Ds aged 9 watch stuff but fucking hell no. No way.

SheABitSpicyToday · 02/10/2021 18:16

My parents allowed me. I was a horror nut from quite a young age. @Poppetts1234

Clocktopus · 02/10/2021 18:22

Speaking from my own experiences, I grew up in the 80s where it was common for people to take age ratings with a huge pinch of salt. There were toys for films like Robocop and Terminator which definitely weren't kids movies and cartoon versions of grown up films (cartoon Robocop for one) so people let their kids watch the films because if it wasn't suitable then there wouldn't be a cartoon or a toy, would there? My mum let me watch the original IT when it first came out, her reasoning was that it was about kids my age and a clown so couldn't be all that scary. She also used to record the original V for me, I can't remember how old I was but I was definitely younger than 9, because I like aliens.

Clocktopus · 02/10/2021 18:22

And speaking of aliens, we watched Aliens.

HungryHippo11 · 02/10/2021 18:27

Definitely not appropriate, aside from the violence and sex scenes, surely most 9 year olds wouldn't be mature enough to really understand it.

Meruem · 02/10/2021 18:28

My DC watched Hellraiser at ages 3 & 4. It was accidental. It was in the days of video recorders and it was on in the middle of the night so I’d set it to record. They got up early and DS knew how to work the video so he just pressed play and when I came down they were glued to it! DD adored pinhead! I’ve always been quite a laid back parent so I never really told them they couldn’t watch something. Sexual stuff obviously no, but I didn’t really have an issue with violent stuff, they knew it wasn’t real.

They’re both in their early 30s now and I can confirm they didn’t turn into psychopaths! DD still loves a good horror. DS not so much although we are all watching Squid game and loved Alice in borderland. Tbh I find watching the news is often far more horrifying than a made up story.
