I know a mum that allows her 9 year old to watch this.

I’m really interested to see how many parents are ok with this?

AIBU to be a bit shocked about this?

Yes I should mind my own business but I’d be really interested to hear others opinions

If my 10 year old asked to.watch it I'd let him. Why wouldn't you? My 11 year old has chosen not to. My 6 year old no. She'd find it boring.

Mrgrinch · 02/10/2021 20:29

Those who happily allow their children to watch this (and similar) do you ever stop to think about what lasting effect this may have on them? Shocking.

Because I wouldn't want to desensitise a literal child to sex and violence.

Because it's totally age inappropriate and there are plenty of other things to watch.

Because they would talk about it with other children at school and traumatise eachother. Imagine them telling other children if they play games and lose they'll get shot in the head?

The fuck…..it’s an adult tv show not a child’s program.

Because it’s not appropriate. That’s why.

It is okay to say no to kids sometimes.

Sometimeswinning · 02/10/2021 20:36

I've not seen the sex yet. Episode 2 at the moment. Do you hide the news from your children? Do they not learn about Romans, wars?? Tudors? Very violent!

History, with a context and delivered at the appropriate age and level of understanding isn’t at all comparable.

So you haven't even watched it all yet you're saying you'd let them watch it?

Learning about history is quite different to watching a grown man kill himself isn't it.

sbhydrogen · 02/10/2021 20:38

It's Squid Game, not Games.

Surely there’s a difference between teaching your kids that there’s been violence throughout history and showing them a realistic portrayal of people being shot in the head at point blank range or black market organ harvesting…
sbhydrogen · 02/10/2021 20:39

I guess I'll have to watch it first before passing judgement on this topic. I hear it's very good!

Soubriquet · 02/10/2021 20:40

Oh yes. It’s a good show. Just not at all suitable for children.

honeylemonteaforme · 02/10/2021 20:41

@Blueemeraldagain

I teach in a small SEMH school and a member of my tutor group (year 8) told me he had watched it and when I expressed surprise at him watching it at his age he hurriedly assured me he’d fast forwarded through the sex scene…..
Haha the sex scene is the one that got fast forwarded in our house. It's a good show but a bit gross for me personally so I half watch it and play on my phone, DD (teen) and DH don't really see it as believable violence but I have a harder time seeing it that way. I would never let a pre-teen watch it!
IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 02/10/2021 20:41

No chance.
Letting children watch such graphic stuff is being a total failure as a parent!

Bananalanacake · 02/10/2021 20:47

I hope it's all acting and not real (too scared to Google).

Sometimeswinning · 02/10/2021 20:48

So bloodshed of history is ok. A make believe TV show is an issue. Yes I'm on episode 2 and I'd let him watch it this far. Anyone's children play Minecraft?

Sparklesocks · 02/10/2021 20:48

Yes it’s fiction - a drama series.
5thnonblonde · 02/10/2021 20:51

@Banalanacake yeah it’s just what they do with debtors in S.Korea apparently

Bananalanacake · 02/10/2021 20:52

Thank goodness for that, though me and my DDs are sticking to My Little Pony and Abby Hatcher.

Minecraft, the cartoon blocks building game? Oh yes exactly the same as Squid Game, but perhaps I missed the level where the little square men’s brains splatter over the floor in high resolution. My mistake.

Did you just compare the violence in squid games to minecraft? Confused
Dillyjones72 · 02/10/2021 20:58

No way! Wouldn’t let my 12 year old watch it either. Graphically violent as well as everything else.
Some parents really need talking to. I’d beware of letting your kid play or
Sleepover at that hse if your children are friends.

Sometimeswinning · 02/10/2021 20:59

Where they beat an animal to death for food?? Creatures stalk and kill them? Honestly, talk yourself out of it but if squid game was animated that would be OK?

fedup2017 · 02/10/2021 21:00

Watched it with my 17 year old and my very nearly 15 yr old. Ive also got q 12 year old and an 8 yr old. Would i watch i let my younger children watch it? Would i fuck!
Minecraft is completely different..... and for what its worth i wouldnt let them watch a documentary with people being shot in the head either !

Dillyjones72 · 02/10/2021 21:01

‘ So bloodshed of history is ok. A make believe TV show is an issue. Yes I'm on episode 2 and I'd let him watch it this far. Anyone's children play Minecraft’

And yet again some parents on MN prove just how fecking bananas they are! Yeah, Minecraft - essentially a video game based on Game of Thrones, Battle
Royale and Driller killer.
Amiright????
