Can someone help me with my salary?

Afternoon Smile posting for traffic as I'm a bit stuck on how to work this out. I have asked my new manager as he's in the same boat but he's unsure too.

Just started a new job and the salary is 20k.
We are paid every 4 weeks. How do I work out what I'll take home every month? (I'm assuming it will be the same amount each month?)
Do I just divide 20k by 13 months? (Then put into gov website which will show me my take home pay)

My last job was the same amount but I was paid monthly so a bit easier to work out. Thanks , I'm clueless and my manager doesn't know either 🙈

£1326.29 every four weeks after deductions. I used the listen to taxman calculator website.

Keepingupwithme · 02/10/2021 16:59

Does this sound right or is there another way to work it out?

20 divided by 13 = £1,538
Put into gov website - take home pay around £1350

If you’re paid 4-weekly then it won’t be the same amount each month, surely? (I’m paid monthly so don’t know but it seems that way to me)

Cavagirl · 02/10/2021 17:03

That's quite odd, it's definitely every 4 weeks not every calendar month?

I'd do 20,000 / 355 7 4 = £1534 so less tax that's your paycheck in theory

Cavagirl · 02/10/2021 17:03

Sorry 365 obvs

Flup · 02/10/2021 17:03

Yes, four weekly is sometimes called lunar monthly. Divide annual sum by 13.

It’s not that odd, loads of people are paid every 4 weeks rather than monthly

Use the listen to tax man calculator, you can put all your deductions like student loan, pension etc in there to get more of an estimate

memememe · 02/10/2021 17:05

20k divided by 51 weeks in the year. times the answer by 4 and that is your gross salary every 4 weeks. youll need to take off any deductions for tax, ni, pension etc.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 02/10/2021 17:05

There are calculators online like PP has said

memememe · 02/10/2021 17:05

that should say 52 weeks, typo sorry

BillMasheen · 02/10/2021 17:05

I use this

www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

Options to click for weekly/fortnightly/4 weekly etc.

Prior to finding that, I have emailed payroll dept to ask how much my take home pay would be.

SylvanasWindrunner · 02/10/2021 17:06

Yep just use Salary Calculator or Listen to Taxman website!

MissOrganisedMe · 02/10/2021 17:07

www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/

I find this accurate.

Lifeispassingby · 02/10/2021 17:10

Our salary is £20k- before or after tax? Once you’ve calculated your salary without tax then divide by 13 x

TambourineTimesThree · 02/10/2021 17:10

DH gets paid 4-weekly. You're exactly right to divide salary by 13.

Takes a bit of getting used to to manage monthly household expenses - he really needs to keep an eye on pay days versus direct debits. But it's very nice to have (what feels like) a bonus payment in the month you get paid twice!

Keepingupwithme · 02/10/2021 17:11

Thank you everyone. So should my monthly pay be the same every month or will it change? I thought wages only changed if people were on hourly rates not salaried?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 02/10/2021 17:12

Are you paid every fourth week or every month?

Keepingupwithme · 02/10/2021 17:14

@BunnytheFriendlyDragon fourth week. Everyone was paid yesterday (not me as only just started) and we will be paid again on the 29th I believe

Merryoldgoat · 02/10/2021 17:16

£20,000 / 52 weeks will be your weekly pay.

Multiply by 4 (£1,538.46) to get your 4-weekly salary.

If you budget as if that’s your ‘monthly’ pay you’ll get a ‘free’ month at some point which is nice although I detest 4-weekly pay.

Merryoldgoat · 02/10/2021 17:17

You need to get this clear in your head - you aren’t being paid monthly - it’s 4-weekly and it will be the same every 4 weeks.

It’s not monthly. It sounds the same but it’s not.

martingrowler · 02/10/2021 17:17

Sounds awful... what day will you have your direct debits come out?

Keepingupwithme · 02/10/2021 17:20

@Merryoldgoat sorry, I meant every 4 weeks 🤦‍♀️ I've been paid monthly in all previous jobs so it'll take me a while to get use to this. As long as the pay is the same I don't mind. I was just a bit worried that it was going to change all the time and I didn't know how I'd work out my outgoings etc 😱

Keepingupwithme · 02/10/2021 17:22

I've also noticed (after I started the job) that the company have terrible reviews from previous employees saying they were always paid the wrong amounts so I want to make sure I know how much I should be paid incase the same thing happens to me and I need to challenge it!
