To ask for your help with Alan

Alan is a 5 month old cat Grin

He is a dirty little ape. I have witnessed with my own eyes him peeing in:

  1. a full bag of shopping on the kitchen floor.
  2. his play tunnel
  3. my linen basket

Which makes me think there’s plenty more places he’s pissed when I wasn’t looking. I’m recovering from covid and my sense of smell isn’t great, but I keep thinking I can smell cat wee everywhere Sad

He’s been neutered. He’s squatting down and doing a full wee rather than spraying. He has a litter tray which he does use, but it would appear sometimes he can’t be arsed. Litter tray is cleaned regularly.

Cat experts, please help!

@DeepaBeesKit

8 weeks the absolute bare minimum age to take a cat from its mother. An 8 week kitten will be just barely weaned.
A kitten should be with its mother for 12 weeks by which time it will be weaned, socialised, properly litter trained, and able to clean itself.
ghostyslovesheets · 01/10/2021 18:54

Oh they are just beautiful x I love kittens but I swore I’d stop at 6 cats 😂

ghostyslovesheets · 01/10/2021 18:55

Oh and well done Hattie for getting it in the bucket! Bernard is a bit too big for his nest there so often topples the whole thing over - much to the horror of his fellow tree dwellers

Cherry4weans · 01/10/2021 19:08

When my cat wees in different places (especially cold places) it means he has a uti. He is prone to this during times of stress or when there is no running water available (he won't drink still bowls of water)

Imcatmum · 01/10/2021 19:16

Ive only one question, if his name is Alan, what did you call his sister?

EL8888 · 01/10/2021 19:27

Too cute! Loving your wallpaper too

I see someone has suggested the Feliway. I’m currently using that to soothe one of mine who is a bit stress and grooming too much, leading to bald patches

ArabellaStrange · 01/10/2021 19:33

This is Charlie. This morning Charlie threw himself into the bathtub while I was showering.
Charlie could not exit the bathtub because it was slippery and wet. My wet self picked Charlie up and deposited himself out of the bathtub on the bathmat.
Charlie proceeded to find my discarded jumper on the floor and piss on it, looking at me defiantly.
Charlie likes to show his displeasure through pissing on clothes that have been worn, we will use this as a defensive tactic in future.

Hi OP - cats will wee in places that smell like you (ie. your bed) for attention - Alan either has an ailment he wants you to know about or he simply wants cuddles all day long.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 01/10/2021 20:13

Another one for change the litter type mine wouldn't entertain wood pellets and shit next to the litter tray rather than use them, no issues since we switched to more traditional kitty litter.

doctordoverylittle · 01/10/2021 20:37

Alan, you dirty little bastard, its Sheila the cat here. Stop pissing in bags.

That should do it OP.

In Alan's defence, he is very cute Smile

Our cat once got involved in a bit of a hissing-match with another cat outside, jumped through the window and pissed on my lap.

She's an only-cat now, but when we had her sister she used to pee on things from time to time (laundry basket, ds's school bag, shopping bags) think it was a territorial thing.

KingdomScrolls · 01/10/2021 21:59

I didn't think a kitten should be neutered until at least six months, maybe that's caused some issues? We were told our cat was 13 weeks when we got him (he's a big lad) but when we took him to the vet they said he was no more than 7/8 weeks. I used to wake up to him suckling my earlobes because he missed his mum ☹️. He used to pee especially on carrier bags! He got lots and lots of attention and a cuddly toy, a children's glove puppet of a black cat (same as him), that he loved it used to be bigger than him and now he is much much bigger than it (and next door's dog...) , he still carries it around like a dog would and the fur on its head is very worn from all the grooming. Maybe he needs a mummy substitute? We also found the opposite to PPs he's better with wooden litter than the normal stuff.

grapewine · 01/10/2021 22:02

I have zero advice, sorry, but my god, they're adorable.

grapewine · 01/10/2021 22:03

(all the cats)

I really need one or two in my life, wee on bags/clothes and all ...

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2021 09:29

@KingdomScrolls there is no reason to wait until 6 months.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/10/2021 09:42

A few points to add

1 - Alan is gorgeous, as is his sister
2 - Alan is a great cat name
3 - 8 or 9 weeks for kittens to leave mum is absolutely fine, and pretty standard for rescues.
4 - neutering is now routinely done much earlier than in the past. My two black 'kittens' were done at 8 weeks by Battersea.

In terms of the inappropriate peeing I can't help much I'm afraid - but would concur with others who have suggested putting him in the litter tray everytime you catch him. He might just be a bit thick Grin

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2021 09:57

OP have you not had him checked for a UTI? That would be my first move.

Hatsuma · 02/10/2021 17:41

@doctordoverylittle please thank Shelia for her motivational words, hopefully they will sink in Grin.

Well there are now 3 litter trays in the house, I’ve put the clumping cat litter in the new ones. So far Alan seems be having a lovely time digging around in the one in the living room, spreading cat litter all over the floor, but I’m yet to see him actually use it for its intended purpose.

I also received my piss detector from Amazon today, along with some enzyme cleaner, so that will be an exciting evening.

Hatsuma · 02/10/2021 17:42

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats oh he’s definitely thick, the lights are on but nobody’s home with that one, it’s a bit of an ongoing joke in the house.

@Elieza

You can buy a torch on eBay for a quid odds that shows up bodily fluids like wee if you shine it on the carpet in the dark!

Shows up a kind of greeny colour.

I got one for my old cat. Found some bits I had no idea she’d used as a loo! Totally worth the money.

I echo this. We use this to sobering effect regularly as we have a territorial old girl cat.
5BlackDoors · 02/10/2021 17:45

Oh they are too adorably gorgeous and your wallpaper is pretty awesome!

5BlackDoors · 02/10/2021 17:45

My parents had dogs called Stanley and Gwendolyn. (Airedales)

ilovesooty · 02/10/2021 17:53

I hope he will wee in the litter tray soon. He's so gorgeous.
