To spend £80 on a soft toy

user98009899 · 30/09/2021 19:34

My dd (12) has asked for a soft toy of a character from animal crossing which I would have to get handmade as no where sells them.
I have been quoted £80 to have it made by someone on etsy. I am crazy to spend £80 on a plush toy?
YABU - Yes
YANBU - No

Depends on your income and expenditure

Hm2020 · 30/09/2021 19:35

Not if you can afford it and you think dd will cherish it.

Noogar · 30/09/2021 19:35

It would be stupid of me to spend that much

XenoBitch · 30/09/2021 19:37

YANBU
You are asking someone to handmake it. Their time is worth something.

ParkheadParadise · 30/09/2021 19:40

I could easily afford that BUT I would make dd save up to pay me back. Knowing my dd she would be fed up with it after a couple of weeks.

IDontDrinkTea · 30/09/2021 19:41

Have you checked on the Just Geek website? They sell animal crossing toys

Showmethefood · 30/09/2021 19:42

All about if you can afford it and if she’ll really value it.

LadyCatStark · 30/09/2021 19:43

Maaaaaaybe for a toddler who just loves an unusual programme but not for a 12 year old. You can just say sorry that doesn’t exist.

Silkieschickens · 30/09/2021 19:43

I would pay it for my DS at that age but that would be as I know he would love it for ages as asd and soft toy obsessed then and we had that much spare. So depends on how long your DD will enjoy it for and what else that money could buy for your family. Also how bothered is she about that toy over a cheaper or bigger different one?

SparkyBlue · 30/09/2021 19:43

If you can afford it then go ahead.

yeah I've checked its a character that doesn't seem so popular one of the ducks Weber, some places sell the other ducks but she really likes this one.

It would be for her birthday or maybe xmas depending on how long it takes to make.

I would probably do it, but I've been known to go to ridiculous lengths to get my kids what they want for Christmas in the past.

It's a shame she wants Weber as they have the other characters on Build a Bear.

toolazytothinkofausername · 30/09/2021 19:52

I would buy it, but as the main present.

ParkheadParadise · 30/09/2021 19:52

In that case**@user98009899**
I would buy it.

Heathcliff27 · 30/09/2021 20:03

No, if you can afford it go for it. I spent £150 on a steiff growling bear when my son was about 5, he's now 26 and it's still in the original box with labels on. He's got it now and can decide if he wants to sell it or keep it

Lollypop701 · 30/09/2021 20:06

If you can yes I would… if you can’t I wouldn’t feel guilty

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 30/09/2021 20:20

A classic bear maybe, but something that she will barely remember in two or three years? Probably not.

RobertaFirmino · 30/09/2021 20:20

For an older child or adult, who will look after it AND you can actually afford it then why not. There's no way I'd be spending that amount on one for a toddled though, you may as well draw the money from the ATM, tear it up and drop it in a puddle!

chestnutshell · 30/09/2021 20:26

Yeah why not if you’ve got the funds. Supporting a small business and getting a nice bespoke, much wanted gift.

NewPapaGuinea · 30/09/2021 20:28

Who’s the character? Build a bear do some Animal Crossing characters.

MaskingForIt · 30/09/2021 20:30

I’d give her some money and let her decide if she really wants to spend it on a soft toy. It’s easy to want things when someone else is paying.

NewPapaGuinea · 30/09/2021 20:31

I’ve just noticed you’ve answered that already. I spent £150 on a Paddington Bear for my DS, although that was partly paid for by money from work when he was born.

waybill · 30/09/2021 20:33

Does she know that they are not available as ready-made merchandise, and surely somebody making one would be infringing copyright?

godmum56 · 30/09/2021 20:35

ok I am snot faced but does the maker have permission from the licence holder to make and sell the toy? because if not then the transaction is illegal. Yes you may get away with it but some firms (Disney are known for this) are very strict about this stuff and will chase it. If you found the toy somwhere like Etsy, then be careful. They do browse on there and do chase unlicensed producers
