Ridiculously priced bloody waterproofs

So got second mortgage and bought a waterproof from a certain company that supposedly tests their rainwear in Cornish rain… my question is, is the bloody thing ever going to dry? Walked dog in rain yesterday and it’s still damp. How’s that supposed to work? Aibu to expect raincoats, especially ridiculously expensive ones, to be able to be used two days in a row?

Is is a proper outdoor brand? All of ours dry within hours. Fashion brands dabbling in outdoor wear are usually hopeless…

the80sweregreat · 30/09/2021 18:26

Which is the best brand to buy ?

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 30/09/2021 18:34

@Itsanewdah hmm I fear you may be correct. I went somewhere I could actually try stuff on

I swear by Berghaus

lovelyupnorth · 30/09/2021 18:40

Cost doesn’t always reflect quality.

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 30/09/2021 18:45

I find that brand amazing, no issues with drying- have a Janelle

Mercurial123 · 30/09/2021 18:47

Never had that problem with my waterproofs. Which brand is it? I have a North 66 raincoat tested on Icelandic fisherman, it's v good.

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 30/09/2021 18:50

It’s Seasalt, a Plant Hunter.
It’s lovely but the rain is just sitting happily on top. Not sinking in, but also not going anywhere… it’s been hanging up overnight…

Have you shaken the rain off? If not, do that first. Is the inside dry? if yes then it's ready to wear. If the inside is wet, ie the rain has come through, then you have a problem

Plexie · 30/09/2021 18:55

If the rain is sitting on top, you need to wipe it with a dry cloth, otherwise you're just waiting for the water to evaporate.

icedcoffees · 30/09/2021 18:56

You need to buy a proper outdoor brand, not a fashion brand that happens to sell some waterproof clothing.

I wear Rohan. Is it fashionable? No, not particularly, but my jacket can be worn for 8+ hours in the pissing rain and I'm still bone dry underneath. It also dries off within an hour or two maximum.

I'm a dog walker so it's had good use this week - I've worn it daily and it's never failed me. It's been bone dry every morning too.

Xiaoxiong · 30/09/2021 18:56

If the rain is sitting happily on top = waterproof!

You need to give it a good shake, and hang it near a dehumidifier if you have one. There's too much humidity in the air for it to evaporate off without some help!

Surpriseat42 · 30/09/2021 18:59

I’m quite reliant on reviews now for this sort of thing, DS has an inexpensive coat from Mountain Warehouse and it’s much the best he’s ever had as the water completely repelled by it.
I agree I can’t be doing with coats that feel wet / wet and heavy. I don’t enjoy Barbours much .

Jammylodger · 30/09/2021 19:02

I love my Janelle from same range but if it gets wet, I ensure I dry it off near a radiator before I wear again - it is actually totally waterproof and no need to do this but I like it to feel dry when I put it on .. Not sure any fabric could self dry itself unless in an airy space - how are you hanging it up after use?

scottishnames · 30/09/2021 19:09

I got wet through and chilled to the bone wearing supposedly waterproofs from I suspect the same company.
Now I buy Didricksons; expensive but last for years and years and thoroughly, properly waterproof. I expect Rohan is also good, as PP says.
On a cost per wear basis, both these brands are really not bad at all, assuming that you're going to be wearing the coat for approx half the year for approx 5 years.

And the peace of mind is priceless.

MintJulia · 30/09/2021 19:13

I can vouch for Berghaus and Schoffel. Waterproof, windproof and warm.

They cost a lot but last for 15-20 years if looked after.

That means the waterproofing is doing its job! You need to shake it off and hang it somewhere warm and dry.
Itsanewdah · 30/09/2021 19:16

Seasalt is a fashion brand. Might be waterproof, but not functional. Mine are schoffe and Didrikson and easily dry within hours.

Tr1skel1on · 30/09/2021 19:18

Give it a really good shake and hang it somewhere warm to dry.

I live in a coastal location known for bad weather and have a long Lands End coat for walking my collie. It's 8 years old and still absolutely brilliant

gogohm · 30/09/2021 19:27

Next time buy an outdoor brand - I have a trespass coat that looks like a sea salt one but is actually waterproof

Jammylodger · 30/09/2021 19:40

What does waterproof but not functional even mean? I own a Janelle sea salt coat and have used it in all weathers and not once has it leaked and got me wet .. definition of waterproof functionality

DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 19:42

Sea salt is not proper outdoor gear.

Get to a hiking or camping shop and get a proper waterproof. Hint - if it looks trendy it's almost certainly crap.

DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 19:44

Ps yes yes to berghaus and schoffel. I have a schoffel coat and berghaus waterproof trousers, both excellent

icedcoffees · 30/09/2021 19:45

Waterproof is one thing, but functional is another.

Good quality waterproof gear is breathable, washable, quick drying, has excellent DWR on the outer fabric and is designed for practicality, not fashion.

Sea Salt isn't an outdoor brand, it's a fashion brand that sells some waterproof coats. Which is fine if you're wearing them on the school run or around town on a rainy day, but for dog walking you ideally need something designed for the outdoors.

I'm a bit of a waterproof clothing nerd as I sold it for years as part of my job and now I wear it daily, lol.

Ozanj · 30/09/2021 19:49

I prefer Joules for mine. Not technically waterproof but works to keep me warm and dry where I am. I do have waterproof coats from Mountain Warehouse and Regatta both under ÂŁ30 & they are really quick drying.
