Ridiculously priced bloody waterproofs

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 30/09/2021 18:21

So got second mortgage and bought a waterproof from a certain company that supposedly tests their rainwear in Cornish rain… my question is, is the bloody thing ever going to dry? Walked dog in rain yesterday and it’s still damp. How’s that supposed to work? Aibu to expect raincoats, especially ridiculously expensive ones, to be able to be used two days in a row?

I dug out my old Craighopoer today ( which I had forgotten I had ) and it did a good job , but I could do with a new one really .

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2021 11:15

Craig hopper rather.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 01/10/2021 11:21

I paid ÂŁ50 for a coat from trespass which looks good, is wind and water proof and breathable (horrible otherwise as you slowly steam in your own humidity). I'm thrilled with it. Performs well, feels good didn't cost me an arm and leg

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 01/10/2021 11:22

Tkmaxx had some craghopper coats in stock yesterday

Blendabrethin · 01/10/2021 11:29

Yanbu.

And while we are on the subject, why is it so much harder to buy waterproofs for women than men or children? There are loads of kids and childrens waterproofs online that are a decent price but to get waterproof trousers specifically designed for women you have to pay ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ.

I bought a pair of waterproof trousers from Regatta this week that were labelled unisex but when I received them the tag said mens and the hip flaps will not shut because I am a woman and there is a vast difference between the size of my waist and the size of my hips. Grrrrrr!

Sorry, I have been internally ranting about this all week as it seemed like such a niche complaint.

Does anyone know where in the world I can get ladies waterproof trousers for less than ÂŁ20? Bonus points if they are not a fugly colour.

I have a Mountain Warehouse jacket that's very good.

chesterelly · 01/10/2021 13:10

You need a spaniel to lick all the rain off your coat as you wrestle him trying to towel dry him

SheWoreYellow · 01/10/2021 13:18

Mine just goes over a door for a day or two. If I need it in the meantime, I wear it. It doesn’t matter if the outside is still wet.

WhatDidISayAlan · 01/10/2021 13:23

I wore mine yesterday during an absolute deluge (- treetops trek!) - I have a Patagonia coat and Berghaus coat. I had a rather unglamorous landing from one of the zip wires and got covered in woodchip - waterproofs were rinsed in the wash on a v quick wash (no soap) - and then I put them on a hanger and hang them from the shower head attachment after a good shake.

@TheViewFromTheCheapSeats

I find that brand amazing, no issues with drying- have a Janelle
I have a Janelle too. Best coat I've ever owned.
DoctorSnortles · 01/10/2021 14:24

Another Janelle wearer here, too. Perfectly dry.

I hate gear snobbery. I don’t go up bloody mountains on 590 mile hikes so I don’t need a fancy pants, show-offy, outdoors-for-ten-hours-at-a-time jacket. I want a coat I can walk the dog in for an hour or two twice a day without getting wet, as do many people . Seasalt is perfectly satisfactory for this.

LakieLady · 01/10/2021 14:36

@Ifeelmuchlessfat

It’s Seasalt, a Plant Hunter. It’s lovely but the rain is just sitting happily on top. Not sinking in, but also not going anywhere… it’s been hanging up overnight…
I always give my coats a good shake to get the surface water off before hanging them up. And the coat hooks in my hall are above a radiator, so that helps them dry.

I can't tell from the pics on the website what sort of fabric the Plant Hunter coat is made of, but it's very similar to the Janelle in style. The fabric they use for the Janelle is really water-repellent, rain literally falls off it when you shake it.

LakieLady · 01/10/2021 14:53

@DeepaBeesKit

Sea salt is not proper outdoor gear.

Get to a hiking or camping shop and get a proper waterproof. Hint - if it looks trendy it's almost certainly crap.

My Sea Salt coat has performed better than any other I've ever owned, and that includes Rohan and Berghaus coats.
Declutterclogs · 01/10/2021 15:02

Does anyone have any experience of Scandinavian Edition brand? They look both beautiful AND pricey and if they actually work/last might be a good investment - but does anyone know if they are good like Didriksons or more fashion-y?

Peggytheredhen · 01/10/2021 15:05

I love the Plant Hunter coat, it keeps me head to two dry. I know what you mean about drying off though. Radiator?

Also have a Didirkson for proper winter rain, a Fat Face parka for light cold drizzle, and Trespass and Berghaus raincoats for summer rain.

My other coats rarely get an outing because it's always wet here.

Somethingsnappy · 01/10/2021 15:52

Posters keep saying that Seasalt is a fashion brand, but didn't it start out as a functional brand for Fisherfolk? And then they branched out into fashion too?

WaltzingBetty · 01/10/2021 16:22

I find it odd that you expect your coat to be self- drying.
If you've left water sitting in the outside of it how do you expect it to be dry? The water has to evaporate. The coat isn't magic!

Lots of brands have done similar, but unfortunately many reduced the functionality of their gear at the same time.
PinniGig · 01/10/2021 16:26

I live at the backward ass middle of nowhere in a rural farming area with two dogs, two horses and a lot of traipsing to do in every type and shade of shit weather. Berghaus I think are worth the money they're not cheap to buy will last years if you shake off the excess, hang up to dry off when you get home and don't leave them scrunched up in the car.

PinniGig · 01/10/2021 16:34

Sorry forgot to add, we also volunteer with the SeaWatch foundation so spend a fair amount of time traipsing the coast and getting battered with the weather and again, the Berghaus gear holds up well.

YouTubeAddict · 01/10/2021 16:39

I like my salt rock one. Light weight but very sturdy. Also fits really nicely and dries out quickly. Think it was about £100 but sure I’ll have it years.

TuftyMarmoset · 01/10/2021 17:01

My waterproof jacket is from Jack Wolfskin. I’ve had it for 7 years and it’s still waterproof but not had the issue of it not drying off. It was quite pricey though, over €100.
