Too old for trick or treating?

How old is too old?

For context, where we live is a lovely place for trick or treating- people put pumpkins out and decorate their houses if they want visitors and, afaik, no tricks go on at all.

Against the grain but I say about 16.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 30/09/2021 19:01

I'm 49...I'd say that I might be a bit too old. 🎃

Explosivefarts · 30/09/2021 19:02

As soon as they start secondary far too old after that

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2021 19:03

Those who are saying 12 as the cut off - would you actually think my 13 yo shouldn’t come with me and her little brother (7), and another family also have 13 and 7 yos, maybe a couple of other little ones, to trick or treat in costume? If they want to that is!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 30/09/2021 19:04

I'd say 14

Vates · 30/09/2021 19:05

Definitely one of the things for younger kids, under 10. I live in a first floor flat so don't have to bother (I adore Halloween and would if I had a house) but I wouldn't be answering my door to a group of teenagers! Way too old.

I think going with parents and younger siblings is completely different than a bunch of teens alone
Explosivefarts · 30/09/2021 19:10

Groups of older teens are likely to be out chapping doors when the little ones are all tucked up in bed. They get sent on their way here. Most of them didn’t bother to dress up and just had a mask on . So I intimidating to people living alone

Stompythedinosaur · 30/09/2021 19:11

@inappropriateraspberry

When they don't want to go anymore! Is there an age limit? Many older children take younger siblings out, and as long as it's done in the right way, what does it matter? I think where you live probably makes a difference though. I'm in a small rural village where everyone knows each other, and there are never any trouble makers! I always wonder what would happen if I said trick!
This is similar to my experience. If any teens were causing trouble I'd ring their parents! They never are though.

I think kids can be playful as long as they want.

MadMadMadamMim · 30/09/2021 19:13

If they are old enough to go without parents, then they are too old!

We live in an area with a lot of elderly people - and particularly, a lot of widowed older ladies. DS used to love trick or treating and was really upset when I stopped him going at about 11, but it''s really not on to be knocking on doors at night if it might frighten folks.

It's intimidating for a lot of older people in particular to have groups of teenagers knocking on their door.

Akire · 30/09/2021 19:13

12 ish different if with younger children and obviously looking after them. Gang of 16y turning up wanting sweets think the moment has passed.

XenoBitch · 30/09/2021 19:15

Would it be sad if I dressed up and went Trick or Treating? I was never allowed as a kid, and I don't have any kids in my life to take out. I am 41 Grin

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 30/09/2021 19:16

I live in London so groups of teens would definitely be intimating as I live alone, I know a few years back teens were expecting money and I heard of a few people getting their doors egged for not giving it, completely different a teen with their parents and younger sibling. I would wonder why any teen would want to go trick or treating round here when most of them have the latest phone and designer bags etc to them come knocking for a few penny sweets 😕

Dancingonmoonlight · 30/09/2021 19:20

12 max or younger.
And if a tall 12 year old who looks older, I’d discourage it too tbh.
Obviously SN is ol.

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 30/09/2021 19:20

We have tens every year. We do live in a very small town/large village they keep within the spirit of it good costumes always have a joke or some prepared I’ve had a group singing a well rehearsed song together before and just really enjoy the laugh and they are always looking for sweets not money.
I think it’s great fun.

Dancingonmoonlight · 30/09/2021 19:20

Ok!

How old is too old to go begging? Any age!
Halloween has always been a big thing I ireland 'trick or treating' or 'guising' as it once was is traditional and I always get sweets in on Halloween night for the local kids definitely not considered begging here Confused. Growing up we only went to people we knew and they loved to see us dressed up, same as it is for me now when the kids come to us. It seems to be a fairly new thing in England though.
Dancingonmoonlight · 30/09/2021 19:28

kids definitely not considered begging here

It is by some people.

I grew up in 1980s Ireland and was never allowed go trick or treating as it was considered begging!

My own kids adore going trick or treating though!

Dixiechickonhols · 30/09/2021 19:31

I don’t mind older ones as long as polite and in a costume. They often have little ones with them. We live on an estate with a nice Halloween most people put pumpkins out and join in. My dog dresses up too.

Feel free to knock on my door I don't discriminate Grin
waitingpatientlyforspring · 30/09/2021 21:22

@XenoBitch

I don't care. As long as they are going along with the Halloween spirit and are in costume. Teens turning up in normal clothing... just no!
This is kind of my feeling. A sad mask and I'm not into it but if they make an effort then I don't care their age. My two are yr 8 and 9. They didn't go last year because of covid, this year I'm not sure what their thoughts will be. They both make an effort with their costumes though.

I don’t mind teens if they’re dressed up (not just a mask, proper outfit) and polite.

I’m originally from the USA and obviously it’s a huge holiday there. I am pretty sure I trick or treated until early high school, which is about 13-14. It wasn’t strange.

Also we all went out with groups of friends so it’s interesting to see so many people against it. Though tbh now I hear they’re driving children around in the US and there isn’t a lot of walking involved, so take my ancient 80s experience with a grain of salt!
