Boris Johnson the trivial man

KS: “I don’t think Boris Johnson is a bad man, I think he’s a trivial man. I think he’s a showman with nothing left to show. I think he’s a trickster & he’s performed his one trick. Once he said ‘Get Brexit Done’ his plan ran out. He has no plan’

Yes. I don’t think he’s great either.

I’d like Ed Miliband or Andy Burnham instead - but it seems impossible for Labour to change leaders.

Porridgealert · 29/09/2021 15:50

@pontypridd We've seen what Ed Miliband stands for. I think the Ed Stone is still around somewhere. What does Andy Burnham stand for? I'm interested because I remember him as a minister but he never kept a job longer than a year which doesn't speak to any brilliance. And also that he was the first person eliminated from the leadership campaign. So apart from presiding over the worst police authority in the country and condemning everyone else for failures but never himself, what exactly would Andy Burnhams policies be?

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2021 15:57

I'm politically homeless.
The next election I might not even bother voting ( which I know is a cop out ) I live in a Tory stronghold too.
The conservatives will come up with a slogan or two and all the past mistakes will be airbrushed away :(
People won't trust Labour and their infighting.
They are not United , sadly .

politics4me · 29/09/2021 16:16

Interesting comparisons listed and explained in todays Times.
Bojo and Angela Raynor, both had totally chaotic childhoods with absent Fathers who sometimes dropped in and caused disruption. Mothers scarcely capable. Boris' Mother in homes because of mental health.
Both protective of their Mothers and siblings. Neither plan ahead, why would they? They never could rely on it happening.

This is a precis I hope it is accurate.

Fairyliz · 29/09/2021 16:20

My grandma (born 1900) always impressed upon me how important it was for women to vote after such a hard won battle.

I've faithfully honoured her wishes at every election since I turned 18 but I simply have no idea to vote for in the future. None of the parties appear to have any serious coherent polices to run the country. Its all about showboating, slagging off the opposition and tinkering about with minor issues of no interest to most people.

My gran will be literally turning in her grave.

BrendaBubbles · 29/09/2021 17:01

Far point, but if he can still beat Labour, what does that really say about Labour?

That they can't attract millions of 60+ voters who overwhelmingly vote Tory because they're old right wing DM readers focused entirely on their pensions and not having foreigners as neighbours rather than the future of the country? Probably that.

JassyRadlett · 29/09/2021 17:12

Starmer is a technocrat in a country desperately in need of a spell of workmanlike, technocratic leadership but that is way too shallow to elect it.

He’s also leading a party that probably can’t exist too much longer in its current form, and is hellbent on tearing itself apart as it can’t decide who or what it is for.

StoneofDestiny · 29/09/2021 17:17

Boris Johnson was tolerated 'acting like a buffoon' and got elected as PM. Then, no surprise to many of us, turns out he wasn't acting at all. He is a buffoon and we have a buffoon as PM.

He is a lying, racist thug who doesn't care a stuff about anybody apart from getting to be PM. He dare not be interviewed on TV by quality journalists as he has no genuine principled and heartfelt plan for the country, just 'slogans' and 'sound bites' as fodder to the masses.

So did these old people used to vote Labour but changed as they got older?
StoneofDestiny · 29/09/2021 17:21

Sadly Labour have a history of public squabbling. Tories squabble behind closed doors but are just as divided because they always pop up with a 'stalking horse' to unseat their PM's or party leaders. Remember how often Johnson changed sides and views on Brexit and how often Gove changed sides on who he supported. They are loyal to themselves alone. Power mad with no principles.

Bloodymess · 29/09/2021 17:33

True on Johnson in terms of politics. I listened to most of the speech by Keir Starmer and was bored.

It was a well crafted lawyer like speech but way too long and no charisma. The laughter in the room seemed forced. My reaction to each point he made was - and how, what are your actual plans.

Also where were you been when the extra lives were lost due to the way Covid was handled or contracts given to friends? - certainly not making a big noise in parliament about it.

rocklamp · 29/09/2021 17:41

I agree, he's a trivial man, but Labour are a trivial party now. What are they going to do about effectively opposing the tories?

pontypridd · 29/09/2021 17:55

I’m reading these posts with interest.

Do you think a new Labour Party needs to be formed? Perhaps two brand newly named parties.

Something significantly different needs to happen soon, surely.

OP posts:
rocklamp · 29/09/2021 18:12

New parties take way too long to establish themselves. Until there's electoral reform, smaller ones have no chance. Even if Labour were more effective, they'd still struggle because of the SNP. The tories are taking the piss now and know they can get away with it.

pontypridd · 29/09/2021 18:14

The tories are taking the piss now and know they can get away with it.

Eurgh it’s sad and horrible. Karma will come and bite them eventually. I hope it happens sooner rather than later.

OP posts:
StoneofDestiny · 29/09/2021 18:19

They always have been.
Labour need to keep their disputes behind closed doors and recognise the self destruct button needs to be put away or we will be stuck with a Tory PM.

rocklamp · 29/09/2021 18:19

They're going to have to replace Johnson at some point because it's getting ridiculous now. He's so clearly out of touch, feckless, lazy and uncaring that, even by tory standards, it's looking bad.

Labour have absolutely no excuses why they can't mount very effective opposition attacks, but they're so wet they can't manage it.

Lammysaurus · 29/09/2021 18:21

FFS. People don't vote for Boris Johnson, they vote for the Conservative Party. And they do that because there is no viable opposition - single party or viable coalition - UK-wide that can command a majority.

FOJN · 29/09/2021 18:23

Boris Johnson is a trivial man and Keir Starmer is an insignificant man.

How lucky are we to have an equally awful party of government and opposition.

pontypridd · 29/09/2021 18:28

What if we all collectively make a plan to vote for the Green Party party this time?

No party. No party can be worse than the Tories. It’s worth a try.

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 29/09/2021 18:45

Sir Kier Starmer just drones on too much
His speech reminds me of Neil Kinnock's one in the 80s about his life and childhood.
He didn't make it to number 10 and neither will Starmer.

longwayoff · 29/09/2021 18:46

Monday "We will not ask the Army for help". Wednesday, "Army on it's way". We will not ask any foreign workers to return. Special arrangements now made for this. How much more of this guff are we expected to take? Government says Don't Panic. Public response? More lies, let's panic right now. Europeans must be peeing themselves laughing, look at us, the stand alone country that has taken back control. Its all going terribly well.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/09/2021 18:50

How an experienced prosecution barrister thinks he is putting up an adequate opposition to the incompetent government shit show through his current actions/inactions/statements is truly beyond me.

MLMbotsno · 29/09/2021 18:52

He us right, Boris is all show znd no substance.

user1471538283 · 29/09/2021 18:52

He is bad, trivial and incompetent. And he does not care.
