To find "eco warriors" hypocrisy annoying

Why do so many celebrities lecture on being environmentally friendly whilst they continue to drive massive cars, take private jets/helicopters, fly business class, just fly regularly in general. Its easy for them to buy "ethical fashion" and have their chefs prepare them vegan food (although I'm sure some of them don't even do that).

AIBU to think to myself whenever I see some celebrity spouting off about the environment "well I've given up flying by private jet so good for me, that's a massive cut to my carbon footprint".

Eco credentials aside, it annoys me how many have these amazing figures because time rich, able to work out and employ chefs to tailor a nutritious weight loss plan.

Which is all fine, in itself,.until the inevitable fitness dvd and cookbook comes out.

As a vegan, that annoys me to a lesser extent. For example Alycia Silverstone does cookbooks but I doubt she's got the kind of money to blow on celebrity chefs. Her books at least come across like someone who cooks for themselves.

GoWalkabout · 29/09/2021 08:41

I generally think we can't all be perfect and can still protest, but on this I agree. Some of these people could signal real necessary change AND improve their ratings - by travelling for instance like Greta does, minimally and on green transport. (I am sure some will find hypocrisy in G too, but I have no wish for her to be criticised here)

MsTSwift · 29/09/2021 08:44

I dunno at least they are trying to do some good.

LeVole · 29/09/2021 08:48

Yes, I agree that everyone's a hypocrite. We all make the changes we can but my problem is there feels like such a big difference between telling people about the changes you've personally made and lecturing how we all need to give stuff up (whilst you're blatantly guzzling loads of carbon like we're thick and won't notice).

@BelleOfTheProvince I'll check her out. I'm trying to eat more veggie/vegan meals but having a hard time finding easy to cook meals that feel like complete meals rather than side dishes or "normal" meals but with the meat removed (if you see what I mean).

Wait I see Alicia Silverstone is a diet cookbook! I need the opposite, a non diet vegan cookbook that has recipes that actually keep you feeling full 😂

Foxtailstump · 29/09/2021 08:52

Completely agree. It extends to people I know in real life who preach environmental issues then own two Range Rovers and fly 4 times a year.

LtDansLegs · 29/09/2021 08:53

It annoys me too!

"Oh we're all in this together for a greener healthier world"

  • me, recycling, trying to cut down on driving (very difficult), having a well insulated house, choosing to buy local food etc

Still being told I'm not doing enough, need an electric car, shouldn't be flying long haul on holiday etc etc

  • celebrities, own huge houses that take energy to run, have multiple giant SUVs, use private planes / helicopters, encourages mass consumerism but posts an Instagram story about loving trees and the environment

*everyone is amazed and claps

🙄 it's so annoying.

LeVole · 29/09/2021 08:53

@DdraigGoch

Are you thinking of Ginge and Whinge in particular?
They may have sprung to mind but there are plenty more who are just as bad or worse!

This made me laugh 😂
FeatheredHope · 29/09/2021 08:53

I do know what you mean. Lewis Hamilton and Richard Branson are prime examples of this. How either of them have the balls to lecture the rest of us about climate change etc is beyond me.

Bancha · 29/09/2021 08:57

I think this very often with some people who are vegan and buy ‘faux leather’ (plastic, destined for landfill…) instead of leather which is a byproduct of the meat industry. And who are happy for so much of their food to have thousands of air miles but go on about how much better it is for the environment Hmm

I’m not in anyway saying I’m perfect but I don’t think that veganism automatically is more environmentally friendly in the way people say it is whilst chugging almond milk flavoured with organic protein powder.

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/09/2021 09:02

Bosh, The Green Roasting Tin, Pure and Beautiful vegan cooking got me fat so I can highly recommend.
If you are going for filling I'd recommend make sure it has a good protein source. Lentils, beans, tofu etc. Nuts and avacado are obviously filling but some people swerve them because they grow with more water (though not comparably to meat, so I think it's not the worst eco sin) My favourite is curries, but alas, I got so good at making them it was takeaway every night in our house. Hence they are off limits till I lose the weight.
But yeah, a good coconut and tomato based curry with roasted cashews will keep you nicely full. ;)

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/09/2021 09:05

I'm not vegan for the environment, but can say that whilst some plant milks are more eco than others (oat is the best I think) they still work out more or less more eco than dairy.
Whilst I agree being vegan is not perfect,.most scientists believe plant based is the most significant change individuals can make to be eco.

So stealing this|!

Yes they annoy me too ( not just that unpleasant pair - there are many others).

We should all sit shivering at home wearing an extra jumper or 3 whilst they swan around the world in private jets.

BelleOfTheProvince · 29/09/2021 09:10

Personally I find the xr and insulate Britain hypocrites the hardest to swallow.

Thanks, I'll check these out. DH just ordered a ton of cashews so I might have to swipe some for a curry...

Almond Milk is significantly better for the environment than dairy milk. Do you know how many almonds are in it? Hardly any.
Oat milk is best though, and like PP it's my first choice.

Youseethethingis · 29/09/2021 09:14

Emma Thompson springs to mind, flying in at great carbon expense just to make a dick of herself with ER in London last year Hmm

Fizbosshoes · 29/09/2021 09:25

I felt a bit Hmm about the global citizen concert. There was someone on the radio patronising mansplaining to listeners what it was all about "its not a celebration of the return of live music but to raise awareness of climate change (and other causes) "

I am aware of climate change. I have not been sitting under a rock. I don't need Chris Martin or Elton John to lecture me about it, thanks.

And while I'm here - Insulate Britain.
NOBODY drives on the M25 for fun. Its not fun. At any time. People are trying to get to work/deliver goods etc and you're saving the planet by....creating even more traffic jams and pollution....Confused

Ditto XR. How does glueing yourself to a train (and thus disabling public transport and potentially encouraging people into taxis and ubers) or deliberately spilling gallons of paint, which will need gallons of water or polluting chemicals to be cleared up, help the environment in any way??

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/09/2021 09:25

IMO a lot of them do it for the right kind of ‘look at me and love me!’ publicity.

Yes I agree. Her lack of self awareness was astonishing. Was it really beyond the organisers to rig up a video message?
HarrietsChariot · 29/09/2021 09:31

As the Labour leadership might say, they're scum. The Insulate Britain leader was on TV the other day and got ripped to shreds, refusing to say whether he'd insulated his own home(!), comparing himself to Churchill (my history may be a little sketchy, but I don't recall hearing about Churchill gluing himself to roads - he talked and he persuaded people - also, he was against fascism, not for it like Insulate Britain), then stormed off saying he was "sick of talking to people in this country."

It's utter hypocrisy and rather disgusting. He's willing to go to prison, but not insulate his own home, the very thing he's demanding we all do. Scum, scum, scum.

And don't get me started on Greta Thunberg, the biggest hypocrite of the lot.

Returnoftheowl · 29/09/2021 09:38

I completely agree. Celebs who fly across the world to go to green events, where they lecture us on to give up travelling by plane. It's complete hypocrisy.

I dutifully recycle and walk rather than drive where I can (although I live fairly rurally so that isn't many places tbh). Doubt that's off-set even a tiny amount of the environmental costs to get that celeb there.

If it's okay for them to travel why not the rest of us?

hamstersarse · 29/09/2021 09:40

Eco warriors are the worst humans

Patronising
Hypocrites
Fueled by Ideology and dogma (not scientific)

We have years of this bullshit to come. How depressing.
