To be fed up of the "I'm a key worker" line now

Chishelled · 28/09/2021 08:13

Fair play, I do understand that not every key worker is pulling this out at opportunity and that not all key workers are acting like entitled selfish twits, plus the fact DP and I (although only on day two) are both NHS - him as a doctor and me within mental health.

Our entire local facebook page is full of "I am a key worker, I need to get petrol, people are being so selfish" BUT why do key workers expect to be prioritised for petrol now, particularly when many of the ones posting work in our local hospital which is a 20 minute walk away??

It's just all adding to the scare mongering and hype by trotting out the "I'm a key worker, I need petrol priority...[it's going to run out again], plus plenty of people are having to commute back to work due to the end of furlough and the fact that offices are well and truly reopen - are their jobs seen as lesser?

I propose on the spot fines for anyone who uses the phrase "I am a key worker" to get preferential treatment from this point forwards [unless of course we go back into Lockdown again]

Point of post is explained in the latter half of the last sentence.

Well if she can borrow one of yours, she has three options, lucky her!!

Eh?

Eh?

You said if her car broke down, she can borrow one of yours (plural), presumably three options for fuel?
SirChenjins · 29/09/2021 21:52

Yes - but what’s that got to do with the earlier ‘keyworkers can take a bus’ comment?

That others should work from home............ that ship has sailed!

I think that key workers should consider that they need to live within a really accessible area to their workplace? How would that work?

I am sick of paying my taxes, NI and working and being deemed a second class citizen because I am not deemed a "key worker", i bloody well do my bit for the economy!

No idea, I never said that?
RosesAndHellebores · 29/09/2021 21:57

Key workers:
NHS presently attending work
Teachers
Firemen
Refuse collectors
Utility workers
Funeral directors
Policemen
Some social workers
Food shop staff
Some Manufacturers
Nannies/nursery staff responsible for key worker dc
Prison officers
Etc, etc

And I'm sure many more. However it would really irk me if my dd's mh division who are all still working from home were given priority on production of their NHS badges.

SirChenjins · 29/09/2021 21:58

And how exactly do you propose that would work? It might come as a surprise to you, but there aren’t that many hospitals or jobs - staff commuting miles is far from unusual.

Rosebel · 29/09/2021 21:59

If you want to buy me a house closer to where I work feel free.
I could probably walk to work but sadly I'm not going to do that at 2am. Nor am I likely to find a bus at that time.

I know you didn’t say that - but that’s what my post was referring to.

Neither am I, but i am not classed as a "key worker2 but I pay the taxes, NI and give to the economy and I still need fuel! I am still important in the economy.

It wouldn’t surprise me that NHS workers would expect free houses that will be the next thing
SirChenjins · 29/09/2021 22:04

What do you do that’s important to the economy and that’s more important than the list @RosesAndHellebores posted that can’t be done from home on a temporary basis?

They actually.get priority in some situations.

No, it can't and enough is enough!

Us "non key workers" have suffered months of working in conditions not suitable, not set up and not viable!

Your daughter works with complex need children, which was her choice and has not changed due to covid? No increased work load, no change in working conditions, no change at all?

We need to live again, so your DD has to accept that she needs to join back into society and not have preferential treatment for the dong the job she chose, which COVID did not escalate.

This is a prime example of "I am a key worker and need preferential treatment as I am NHS, her job has not changed"

I pay tax and NI, that's important to the economy..... are you seriously saying that the list posted would be enough to keep the country turning?

really??

SirChenjins · 29/09/2021 22:16

Not just NHS - other keyworkers too.

I don't know about now, but my old NHS trust had nurse's accommodation. Was basically like student digs, but for nurses. I was offered a place (despite not being a nurse) when I was facing homelessness.

Come on - what is it you do that can’t be done from home on a temporary basis? I presume you managed to do it from home for a big chunk of the last year?

I have already answered this!

I am not surprised. I was offered it about 12 years ago.
BritWifeInUSA · 29/09/2021 22:31

@flipertyflop

Can we also do away with the cringey "I'm a key worker" bumper stickers now too? No one actually cares anymore. I work in social care and it makes me wince when I see them!
Those actually exist? Jesus H Christ! Thankfully they never made it across the Atlantic or I’d be tempted to add to each one with “ and I’m a key taxpayer”.
brokenbiscuitsx · 29/09/2021 22:38

What’s the definition of a key worker though? Water and electricity companies are key to society functioning but never saw them mentioned during lockdown. 🤭
