To be fed up of the "I'm a key worker" line now

Chishelled · 28/09/2021 08:13

Fair play, I do understand that not every key worker is pulling this out at opportunity and that not all key workers are acting like entitled selfish twits, plus the fact DP and I (although only on day two) are both NHS - him as a doctor and me within mental health.

Our entire local facebook page is full of "I am a key worker, I need to get petrol, people are being so selfish" BUT why do key workers expect to be prioritised for petrol now, particularly when many of the ones posting work in our local hospital which is a 20 minute walk away??

It's just all adding to the scare mongering and hype by trotting out the "I'm a key worker, I need petrol priority...[it's going to run out again], plus plenty of people are having to commute back to work due to the end of furlough and the fact that offices are well and truly reopen - are their jobs seen as lesser?

I propose on the spot fines for anyone who uses the phrase "I am a key worker" to get preferential treatment from this point forwards [unless of course we go back into Lockdown again]

@sarah77Boo

My daughter is an A&E nurse at our local hospital and is actually now worried about letting some people know her job or seeing her badge outside of work. She's only been qualified just over a year and has experienced the whole hero to villan first hand. If she says she's a nurse people think she's looking for praise when she's not. She's does her jobs because she cares. The people that took the staff treats and clapped for nhs are now those slagging them off and being awful to her face at work. You genuinely see the very best and the very worst of people in her and your job. I would like to see some of them do a shift!
She does her job because she cares? Really there was me thinking she picked up a salary .
Zipperdidoodaa · 29/09/2021 18:21

@vivainsomnia

This thread is hilarious when not far from it you have numerous thread about the nhs falling apart, bit fit for purpose, long waiting lists, not being to access treatment, how outrageous it all is...

The NHS is failing simply because of the catastrophic lack of staff. It's not just one doctor, or even nurse, it's the whole chain of people required to treat one person.

The NHS is desperately trying to hang in and for that needs ALL the staff available to be there.

It's not about paying ones mortgage, it's about saving lives. Utterly despairing that this thread would be started by someone who works for the NHS themselves!

Totally agree with you. I also think people don't appreciate that in order for the nhs to run efficiently and effectively, for people to get their operations, cancer treatment, kidney dialysis, medication etc etc the nurses and drs need admin staff in the background making the appointments, sending the letters etc, without them it would all grind to a halt. So, yes, nhs staff should be prioritised, not all no, but nhs service managers can easily make decisions as to who should be a priority and who shouldn't snd I'm confident this would happen as it did the last time so if you see/hear of an nhs worker, admin or otherwise getting fuel don't be making assumptions that they shouldn't be a priorty - it's not your call. Yes there will be those who abuse the system as possibly some of you would do given half a chance (if you're honest with yourselves) but most of us , because we're in the caring profession won't do so.
CrisPbacon · 29/09/2021 18:23

During a previous petrol crisis only those workers who required fuel to carry out their actual duties got preference. We had a special pass.
So I agree that as with anything, some will abuse it and it needs to be regulated if it continues.
However, I cover an area of 1800 square miles in a very rural area overnight. We have 2 cars on the road and cover emergencies, mainly palliative patients in severe pain. How do you propose I reach them? Bus?

Lennybenny · 29/09/2021 18:24

Oh I agree with this! I work in a school....does that make me a key worker?....nope it just means I have a job.

One other thing that bugs me now and before in lockdown is Morrisons "I'm a key worker" t shirts....

Where did Tom's millions go?

Bunpea · 29/09/2021 18:25

YANBU.

gingercatsparky · 29/09/2021 18:29

It's so sad some people's nasty attitudes. One minute you are clapping for them, bringing chocolates etc, relying on them during a crisis etc. Then as soon as that is over it's back to not caring and nastiness. Unbelievable. It seems some people learnt nothing from the last 18 months. When you don't need it you don't care about it, when you do it's invaluable.

MumMidwifeMe · 29/09/2021 18:31

These threads are so damaging. Most people who are "key workers" don't tout that line for any preferential treatment. I don't know what you hope to achieve from all this NHS bashing but if it's to make more people want to leave the profession, trust me, it's working!

@Zilla1to say the hospitals are empty is a complete falsehood. To say we don't deserve a pay rise!!! Come and do a day in my job & tell me we earn enough to do what we do, particularly in the current climate!

The NHS is broken. We are broken. My colleagues and I are at the end of our tethers.

So considering this is Mumsnet and I'm assuming a lot of you are Mums, perhaps think about the Midwives who cared for you and your baby's, the nurses who did their immunisations or perhaps looked after them in SCBU, the GP's who did your 6 week checks. All of which was FREE!

Stop creating this divisive culture with your hate fuelled diatribe! And OP if you work for the NHS you should be ashamed of starting this thread!

Disgraceful!

I personally think you are. I would give up my petrol so my dcs teacher could get to school. They have missed enough as it is. The selfishness over the last 18 months that has developed is unbelievable.
CuriousCassie · 29/09/2021 18:32

YABU. We have created a gig economy where eg care is outsourced and ultimately provided by very poorly paid carers racing (travel time unpaid) between a geographically widespread group of "customers". Outside urban areas this is a logistical nightmare even without the petrol crisis.
Both my neighbours are old couples still living at home. In both cases one is just about managing to care for the other, because supported by several regular daily care visits (carers dodging across the county from case to case by car). Both sick partners need regular ambulances. I know other solitary old people living alone and bedbound, totally dependent on visiting care.

In my view, we may all be key workers but some are more key than others - for example the home care and emergency services. For myself my work is moderately important to the community and I am chronically ill - but I can walk to a bus stop where buses still run.
My OH teaches children (and if he didn't we'd be back to homeschooling so key? not key?) but can cycle. Save the petrol for those who have no choices

Because people like my bloody parents retired which a huge car and nowhere to work are the ones currently able to queue up in the middle of the day to get it - by 5 all of the petrol stations are empty. That’s why. My parents filled their tank up no appointments, no need but fancy there days out of tea and cake so need petrol and bugger the rest of us
Againstmachine · 29/09/2021 18:36

No it isn't 1.5 million work for the NHS most never saw a covid patient.

I have no bone to pick with NHS but stop making yourself out to be victims.

Ylvamoon · 29/09/2021 18:38

Tis sums it up beautifully:

To be fed up of the "I'm a key worker" line now
MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 29/09/2021 18:38

Everyone has a sob story and a need...... My brother in law is the sole carer for his 94 year old mum and he can't get petrol either. Yet wouldn't get priority because he ' isnt a key worker'

So he's out the house for 16 hours a day now instead of 12 because he has to get the train to her house. They cant even bring her home because she can't manage stairs and hell would freeze over before she'd use a commode.

Ylvamoon · 29/09/2021 18:39

This not tis!! Hmm

JudgeRindersMinder · 29/09/2021 18:39

@MissTrip82

I work in ICU.

Have literally never heard any of my colleagues describe themselves like this. Not once. Not ever.

IME it tends to be a phrase used by people quite a long way from genuinely key roles.

I came here to say this, but you already did! Operational police staff and I’ve never, and have never heard any of my colleagues, referred to myself as a key worker
MumMidwifeMe · 29/09/2021 18:41

And this is your take away from my post. Says it all really!

Livelovebehappy · 29/09/2021 18:42

I agree OP. I thought it was a good idea at the start of covid for priority with supermarkets to be given to key workers. Until I saw how people abused it. Most of us have to work. Most of us have to get paid and put food on the table. That’s the reality of it all.

Offmyfence · 29/09/2021 18:43

@myusernamewastakenbyme

I'm sick to death of reading posts on fb from people calling others idiots for trying to get fuel...I live alone...im not a keyworker but my wage is the only one coming into the house...if i can't get to work i don't get paid...I don't have a husband to split the bills with...its all down to me.
Exactly!

FFS! We all have to earn a living!

Offmyfence · 29/09/2021 18:45

@Magenta82

A woman on our local page was kicking off because she is a key worker and needs fuel. She works in a school office.
We had one on our face book page. She books in repairs to mobility scooters, over the phone, so can be done from home!
MumMidwifeMe · 29/09/2021 18:45

You are utterly clueless if you cannot see that the NHS is on its knees!
Do you not understand it's the impact of Covid, not just caring for people with Covid that's causing the issues. If you are a medical professional working in a hospital you HAVE cared for someone with Covid. We all did. We had no choice!

Myfilterisbroken · 29/09/2021 18:48

Were does the line come with key workers? For example the guy who served my boiler, is he a key worker, gas emergencies? Is someone who works at tesco a key worker? Etc Also, as the op mentioned, you could be a keyworker but be able to walk to and from work.

Myfilterisbroken · 29/09/2021 18:49

I’m a carer for my child with disabilities of my own.

Scottsy100 · 29/09/2021 18:52

I was over it a year ago 🙄 it’s becoming like an X Factor why they deserve to win story

eeyore228 · 29/09/2021 18:53

@ MumMidwifeMe your wasting your breathe on people like @ Zilla1to because they don't want to know how bad it is. Yes, there were staff who worked from home but most NHS were redeployed to work where they were needed. Now we are struggling for a different reason. My DH works in A&E it has already caused him to suffer a breakdown because of the expectation and demand. He looks tired and ill. He comes home starving because he hasn't eaten and just looks more broken each time he finishes work. No one cares as long as they get there treatment. If they don't it's because the staff are lazy or crap. It's not really a surprise people are leaving or only want to work part-time.
