People adamant they can't go to work, so get a train.

Ride a bicycle.

Use the bus.

Talk of closing schools for god sake, whatever next.

It's ridiculous that people rely so heavily on the use of their car that life appears to stop still when they can't drive it.

You don't see this type of hysteria among non drivers, ever.

I don't drive and never have. I've never flapped like this about not being able to go to the supermarket, work etc.

OP posts:

@Couchbettato

Do buses not use fuel? 🤨

Yesterday as I walked from my mum's home, past 6 bus stops, each stop was packed with people waiting for a bus. Usually there's one or two across the whole walk.

The last man I walked past was on the phone telling someone how 2 buses hadn't turned up.

That could either be fuel, or it could be that more people need to use the buses and they're at capacity and can't take more on by the time they're out our way.

Most of the main bus services around here are electric. I assumed it was the same in other parts of the country but maybe not.

@canary1

Idiotic post from someone who has a highly blinkered view. I won’t have the ability to do my job after tomorrow. Yes it’s essential, lives depend on in. Yes I need my car to do it. No public transport won’t solve the problem at all.
But OP got a bus when she was 37 weeks pregnant, so you can't possibly need your car!
Lokdok · 28/09/2021 07:20

How lovely for you. Grow up!! I can't get my whole family on a bike and get them to respective schools, nursery and work in time when they're spread out over several miles. Buses come once an hour and only go to one place, which is not where I need to be. It's never as simples as 'lazy drivers'.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 28/09/2021 07:20

Apart from being a pile of goady nonsense the ablesim is huge from the op
It's just depressing that people can't understand what a situation like this can mean for people with disabilities and their families and carers
But then I doubt much thought went into this thread...

Do buses not use fuel?

All my local buses and taxi use lpg

Wife2b · 28/09/2021 07:23

What a stupid post!!

People are panicking because they need to get to work. I commute an hour to work each day. My job has me travelling to peoples homes, schools etc and sometimes transporting children and families. If I can’t fill up then I can’t go and safeguard the children that I am working with!! Public transport would not be a viable option - I’d never get anything done!

Flowerlane · 28/09/2021 07:23

We need a car and would be buggered without one for even a day.

We live rurally. School is 5.6 miles away. My work is 2 hours away by car.

Train station is 7.4 miles away. No buses till you get into town which is 6 miles away and even then there is no direct bus or train to the places we need to go.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/09/2021 07:26

I live 35 miles from the nearest train station.

Our village is 7 miles from the nearest small town.
We have four buses a week, going to three different destinations. They leave around 10am and return at 1pm.
The nearest hospital is 42 miles away.

Now tell me I don't need a car?

Zerogravity · 28/09/2021 07:26

I rarely drive. I get a bus or walk to work as do my kids. It takes them 10 minutes, me 30. Guess what? Not everyone lives close to where they need to be. My parents rely on cars as my mum can't walk far. Even if you don't need cars yourself OP, surely you know people who do.

Acommonreader · 28/09/2021 07:27

I am a carer, I need to make four home visits today to house bound elderly people. I don’t have a bike. The nearest train station is 8 miles away and none of my clients villages have a station anyway. I have 15 minutes to get to the next house after each call, it would take me longer than this to just walk to the bus stop. Most villages round here ( Derbyshire) have 5/6 buses PER DAY! I simply could not visit everyone even if I had more time. It is not possible.
OP please do not make these ridiculous assumptions based on your own personal circumstances and congratulations on not needing a car. Well done you.

ivykaty44 · 28/09/2021 07:27

UnsuitableHat

Many take this part of their lives and cope really well with a few alterations. In fact it’s not rare for them to continue without a private car even when their licence can be returned.

Offmyfence · 28/09/2021 07:27

@ivykaty44

There are many angry drivers on this thread

Let’s hope you don’t lose your driving licence through an illness and DVLA take it away

This hasn’t happened to me but I’ve met many that it has happened to through my work. Not everyone gets to get their licence back when their illness stabilises either.

Well they'd have to adapt their lifestyles by moving etc?

Just like OP has!

As you'll see from this thread and presumably you understand in real life, lots of people depend on their cars.

So I'm not sure what the point of your post is, are you saying nobody should depend on their cars?

Droite · 28/09/2021 07:30

OP, why are you refusing to acknowledge the many valid reasons for needing to travel by car given on this thread?

ivykaty44 · 28/09/2021 07:30

Offmyfence Actually not one of them has moved home from not having a licence. Anecdotal I know.

Life changes, but change isn’t always bad and some prefer it, eventually

MrsIPFreely · 28/09/2021 07:30

We have an electric car so we are feeling very smug in this situation. However we are entirely reliant on our car. If I wanted to get to work on public transport it would take me around two hours with a walk, bus and then train. The nearest train station is about 8 miles but you couldn't cycle as the roads are too dangerous and there is no provision for pedestrians or cyclists. I also live in a town with very few decent employment opportunities so travel is essential for me.

The OP is just being an arse.

Tavelo · 28/09/2021 07:32

I agree OP. While there will be a proportion who genuinely can't do without, they'll be wildly outnumbered by those who can.

Peace43 · 28/09/2021 07:33

I live in a rural village 30 minutes from the nearest shop. Bus once a day and doesn’t go to the town with DDs school, dentist, hospital etc.. we have sufficient food not to starve if I can’t get to the supermarket for a week but once petrol gets low enough we stay home!

littledrummergirl · 28/09/2021 07:36

My mil has been hospitalised for a couple of weeks. Last Tuesday we were advised to prepare for the worst and to say our goodbyes so we drove the 150 miles to see her.
We luckily filled up the car as we were there for a few days as she amazingly, somehow pulled through- thank you to the amazing staff who are caring for her.
We have since returned home for work etc but dh will be driving to see her for the next few weekends.
How long do you think it will take to do the 150 miles there on foot? The train fare is out of our reach.

SmileyClare · 28/09/2021 07:38

I haven't seen hysteria or people acting like it's the end of the world.
Just people very frustrated and worried about not being able to meet responsibilities and/or lose wages.

We live rurally. My son waited half an hour for the 6.40 am bus to work and it didn't turn up.

I have four cleaning jobs to travel to today and don't have enough petrol so will lose my day's pay and let my customers down. I can walk to my nearest 90 year-old client but it's will take over half an hour traipsing across fields to do so.

It's very frustrating to be told "just relax"

ILoveJamaica · 28/09/2021 07:39

My DH is a Police Officer covering a huge area on his own - yes - one Officer covering miles and miles. When a 999 call comes in he has to blue light it to the destination. How do you suggest he gets there super quick if his police car has no fuel?

BiscuitLover09876 · 28/09/2021 07:40

I feel very sorry for those in rural areas who reply on cars. I have friends who need a car to even get to the corner shop.

SunShinesBrightly · 28/09/2021 07:41

Get the train you say?

Well my DD did try to get to work by train on Sunday morning. Apparently there was a ‘rail replacement bus’ running instead.
Oh great, her 25 min direct journey was about to become 1hr 30 min with a change of bus half way.
When we got to the station (by car - it would have taken her 30-40 mins to walk there) we were told that the bus was cancelled due to lack of fuel. So no transport whatsoever.
(Normal public buses don’t run here on Sundays).

Luckily, we could drive to the next town 20 mins away by car and she got a train operating on another line.

Without the use of my car OP, my DD would not have been able to get to work that day.

I love how "non drivers" don't seem to understand that most of their services exist because lots of other people do drive.

  • Ambulance
  • Police
  • Bin uplifts
  • Supermarket supplies
  • Teachers in school
  • Bus drivers
  • Pub and restaurant deliveries

Plus loads more, but you get the drift

If we all just decided to be "non drivers", society, as we know it, would cease to exist. Literally, the whole country would grind to a halt.
