Third primary dose of COVID vaccination for severely immunosuppressed individuals

LeeBowman · 27/09/2021 17:59

My GP, Consultant, National Vaccine Helpline, and 119 all cite each other to give information about the third primary dose. No one is taking ownership, no one has the answer. Are third primary doses actually happening (as announced on national news)? Has anybody got any info about how to get them?

@Belladonna12

But they also need the booster on top - so four doses in total not 3.

They haven't actually said that they will need four doses in total rather than three. I don't think decision on whether to give a fourth dose to anybody has been made yet. If people haven't responded to 3 vaccine doses there arguably isn't much point giving a fourth one in six months time. Hopefully there will be a vaccine which is effective against the new variants by then anyway and then probably everyone who is vulnerable will receive that.

I think it’s going to be different for all people though....in my circumstances ...I was severely immune compromised when I had my first 2 vaccines....but not anymore....so my 3rd vaccine ( which I had today) is really like my first one....so yes...I would Definately say that for people like me....it could make a big difference to be offered a 4th (booster) vaccine

For the immunosuppressed, GP record searches need to be written and processed to identify who qualifies. Consultants need to identify people in their care who qualify

They've had nearly a month, and still waiting. And the person in my household who qualifies very clearly does - and they've been notified for other things within 48hours of announcements.

The third primary too out has not happened as intended - not at all for many, and with delays and uncertainties for others

It's really not been good enough

SpindleWorld · 28/09/2021 17:14

I feel the same, @nether. I just have a feeling that there actually isn't a 3rd primary.

That's there's just the booster.

I have an actual third primary booked. It’s not a different vaccine anyway.

Had my third AZ this morning, letter came yesterday and I changed the date to today.

Definitely a third dose as I discussed it with the vaccinator. Will get a booster at some point in the next few months.

Also got a bonus flu jab. Scotland though.

SpindleWorld · 28/09/2021 17:36

Well maybe not in my area, then.

A poster upthread explained very well I thought how it would be for some.

Are they still using AZ in Scotland? Third doses and boosters will predominantly be Pfizer in England.
SpindleWorld · 28/09/2021 18:26

Anyway I'm very happy for people getting 3rd and 4th vaccinations. Wishing everyone well who is immune compromised heading into Autumn and Winter Flowers

Ronniesgirl · 28/09/2021 18:45

i've had my letter from my specialist stating i'm eligible for the 3rd primary jab. Just waiting for my GP to organise it.

OrganTransplant123 · 28/09/2021 18:57

I was advised by my renal nurse to take up the offer of the booster rather than wait for the official 3rd jab invite as it’s the same vaccine. Oddly enough my GP rang to offer me the 3rd jab at a joint flu/covid clinic but I’ve already had the booster now.

PiggyPlumPie · 28/09/2021 18:59

@RockallMalinHebrides

Yes, definitely had the Astra Seneca! As far as I'm aware you have to have the same one as your original doses.

PheasantsNest · 28/09/2021 19:02

@RockallMalinHebrides I don't think that's true. You are supposed to have the same as your first doses. I had my third primary AZ at the weekend.

Not for a third primary

That has to be an mRNA vaccine

RockallMalinHebrides · 28/09/2021 19:33

I agree @nether the 1st line for booster and 3rd dose primary is an mRNA - full dose Pfizer or if there has been a previous severe reaction to Pfizer a half dose Moderna for booster or full dose for a 3rd primary.

I did read something about using AZ as a 3rd dose if it facilitated delivery, but it is definitely not the preferred vaccine in England. The protocols for AZ and Moderna haven't been updated yet either.

PiggyPlumPie · 28/09/2021 19:43

I guess this maybe a Scotland/England thing - I was told today that I would be having the AZ as that was what I had had previously.

Hmmph · 28/09/2021 21:44

Thanks everyone. I guess I won’t worry then- she’ll be receiving a Pfizer vaccine soon (I hope) as it’ll be 6 months since her second jab. If 4th boosters appear and she isn’t invited for that, I’ll query it then. I am guessing she hasn’t received a letter...

I've had my booster. I had the Pfizer this time, despite AZ previously.

This hambles has made the front page of the BBC

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-58763476

It's also laid out the timelines

Announcement 1 Sept, letter to GPs and others on 2 September. Third primary jabs meant to have been underway no later than 13 September

Also I saw a tweet yesterday saying there had been a new letter issued, saying that everyone must be offered by 11 October

nether · 02/10/2021 07:21

That people who fall outside the 500,000 most critically vulnerable are getting boosters before them, is one of the things that has rankled most, been a great source of frustration, and is the hallmark of thus policy fail.

That the third primaries were clearly meant to be underway before the booster programme was announced (14/09) and it's still not underway, iis a massive failure

Hmmph · 02/10/2021 08:34

Please to see it on the news today.

Yesterday I called the GP- they denied all knowledge of it and tried to make out I was wrong, despite me telling them when they should have received their letter. They just kept repeating “the third dose booster vaccination...” and I was saying “it’s not the same thing!” I gave up in the end as we were going round in circles. I might take the letter to them as they clearly haven’t received or read it.

It is both shocking and worrying that GPS don’t seem to receive or read the letters from the NHS. This isn’t the first time I have contacted them and they haven’t known about something they were apparently written to about.
