To think kids should be able to walk in the rain

To school if it is less than 30 minutes away?

Yes, of course with a slicker and wellies and a decent umbrella, many children could happily do it. But autumn rains are often accompanied by high winds. I don't like to deal with my umbrella being whipped around and turned inside out; I think a small child or even medium-sized child would be even less able to cope.

Rosebel · 27/09/2021 13:48

My kids walk whatever the weather. They have waterproof coats, shoes and umbrellas. If they didn't then I wouldn't expect them too.

Sirzy · 27/09/2021 13:48

They can but there again most adults wouldn’t if they had an alternative so why shouldn’t the same apply to children?

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2021 13:49

@ChaosMoon

It costs a lot to get clothes that are actually waterproof, not just water resistant. Fine for a 5 minute walk, but not for half an hour. So I guess it depends on people's circumstances.

But if you have the waterproofs then no. YANBU

Kids around here just bring a change of clothes to school.

The same as they would if their parents didn't have a car.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 27/09/2021 13:49

A 30 minute walk in the rain? YABU. I wouldn't walk for 30 minutes in the rain. So I wouldn't expect my child to. They'll then spend the day sat in soggy clothes at school.

DrCoconut · 27/09/2021 13:49

Most are able to. But why would you if you don't have to? There's no prize for misery.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 27/09/2021 13:49

We had to walk as had no fuel, but if I was sitting around doing nothing I wouldn't make them tredge through a torrential downpour!
That's just being nice surely?!

You don't need an umbrella, just a hood that ties under the chin.

@discombobulatedonion

It takes about 20 minutes to walk my son to nursery in the morning on a normal, dry day - we managed it in about 25 minutes this morning (because he wanted to splash in puddles Grin

Provided that the child, at the very least if the adult is unable to, has suitable waterproofs and there's nothing else preventing them from doing so, then yes, more children should walk to nursery/school. Cars and public transport have become too convenient.

You had a point up until public transport. It's still going to be running every day whether or not you use it, whether it's full to the brim or empty. Not taking a bus doesn't help the environment like not driving a car would

I personally think 30 mins is way too long in the rain. 15 minutes max or you'll be drenched which isn't a nice start to the day

That's a big part of the problem too, people would rather jump in a car than do a reasonable walk because they can. Sad for people's health and sad for the environment.
WorraLiberty · 27/09/2021 13:52

Also, for those of you not living rurally, surely the parking situation around the schools means you have to park a few roads away and walk anyway?

They've had to put car exclusion zones around most of the Primary schools here, as it's chaos on a sunny morning, let alone when it rains.

dogsdogsdogs · 27/09/2021 13:52

we walked in the rain. kids got drenched. They had rain coats and umbrella. poor things. I couldn't wait to get home and get my soggy clothes off, they have had to stay in theirs all day. next time it rains like today il be taking the car.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 27/09/2021 13:53

Depends how hard it’s raining surely. Some of what we’ve had this morning has been intense- I wouldn’t want a primary kid waking 30 mins to school in that tbh because they’d be soaked through. Less of an issue walking home as they can get changed.

Iggly · 27/09/2021 13:53

@EatYourVegetables

YANBU. Obesity epidemic, climate emergency, and a fuel crisis, yet some people can’t walk for 30 min.

As for the poster who says But it took me 2 hours to get ready, YABU, jeez, what do you do for 2h, it took me less time to give birth.

😂😂😂😂😂
Iggly · 27/09/2021 13:54

I walked on the rain.

My coat was wet, I was fine.

NotMyCat · 27/09/2021 13:54

To be fair it was bouncing in the NW earlier and I wouldn't want to go out in that! The cat took one look and went back to bed

Iggly · 27/09/2021 13:54

No but there’s a prize for being lazy 😂

Perhaps schools need to let children change into dry clothes when they arrive, like they always used to?

I've a feeling that still wouldn't suit some parents though.

LovelyMondayMornings · 27/09/2021 13:56

We could but I have no inclination to go out and get soaked on a morning like we had this morning.

We walk most of the time but rainy days are car days for us.

DocAutumn · 27/09/2021 13:56

Walking in the rain is grand. Just put your coat on. Obviously if you don't have one it is a problem but you can get second hand or cheap coats for a tenner which is cheaper than car costs, buses or taxis.

Constellationstation · 27/09/2021 13:56

Kids can walk to school in the rain can’t they? I’ve never heard of a rule/law to say that they can’t.

Strangevipers · 27/09/2021 13:58

Yes kids should walk in the rain, wind , snow and sun . Wrapping children in cotton wool doesn't benefit anyone especially the kid

coachmylife · 27/09/2021 13:58

Can someone explain to me how it's possible to afford a money-pit car, and not a raincoat??

We ALWAYS walk. Don't have a car. But I do think I need to get DS some wellies that fit, as today it really was pelting down.

RobinPenguins · 27/09/2021 13:59

Of course they can, they won’t dissolve.

DoItAfraid · 27/09/2021 14:00

@Brakebackcyclebot

They won't melt!

2 hours to get ready for work? 🤔 That's 10 hours a week if you work Mon - Fri. Imagine what else you could do with that time.

I can't imagine taking 2 hours to get ready for anything. I didn't take that long to get ready for my own wedding(s!)

This is such a bitchy comment.
