@CamillaRose

I voted YABU because it’s not very nice having to sit in wet clothes all day. Even the best waterproofs aren’t 100%.
I have £12 waterproof overtrousers. I've had them for nearly 10 years and worn them for many rainy walks to and from work (used go be 30 min walk each way, now 15 mins each way) including some pretty torrential rain. My work trousers underneath have never ended up even remotely wet. Similarly with my raincoat. My last one was a cheap Millet's own brand one, never let in any rain. I have a rather more expensive one now and it's also never let me down.

No matter how good your trainers are, £60?, £120? they wont be waterproof.
Thick coats get sodden, heavy and waterlogged.

You honestly think in 2021 with all the technology that we have that you can't get waterproof trainers? Sports brands like Adidas do waterproof options, not to mention all the outdoor brands. You can even get all black ones suitable for all but the very strictest schools (if you're walking your child they can change shoes on arrival anyway). If on a budget decathlon to a good pair for a tenner. The best coats I've ever found are Lidl waterproofs, again these are under £10 and they certainly don't get heavy. The rain just slides right off them. I've used them for years for DC's hobby that sees them outside in all weathers for extended lengths of time and never had a leak, the weight doesn't change. Sounds like you're choosing the wrong type of coat.

We walk in the rain (it’s like 3 blocks) wearing rain gear. My kids love it when you shake trees full of water on them and they get to jump in all the big puddles on the way home.
The both get to school/preschool drier than the most of the kids driven who walk in the rain from the drop off to the classroom.

Depends in the road. DS is a teen but its an unclassified road with no pavement and no street lights. Rural setting, agricultural vehicles and lorries from the quarries. So in my case, no, regardless of the weather.

But he has no need to walk as theres a school bus stop half a mile from the house.

Chucking down here this morning, sure all the waterproofs were handy and trust all were delivered to school dry

Nah, I make them walk in bare feet and shorts Grin

(yes, this morning was definitely a waterproofs day. Foul weather. All delivered to school/nursery warm and dry though.)

That’s all that matters! Guess rainy season is here!

PinniGig · 01/10/2021 16:21

If they normally walk that same distance when it's dry then there's no reason they can't do it in the rain. Long as they're wrapped up well it's fine. Then again I used to love taking my then young kids out in the rain with coat, wellies and wrapped up like sausage rolls. We'd have a "mini-beast" hunt on the way looking for snails, frogs and whatever the birds had dug up from rainy grass I loved it.

Well I used to walk the 40 mins to and from school every day rain, snow or sunshine dark or light. One part was quite hilly too. It was that or walk 10 mins to a bus stop, 15 mins in the bus and 15 mins at the other end . It wasn't worth going on public transport.
I was still fat though and have been obese all my life so the walking to and from school didn't help much though I suppose I might have been fatter otherwise

I don't remember getting particularly wet and I never wore a waterproof or coat just a shirt, jumper, blazer and a scarf and gloves if it was particularly cold. I took an umbrella when it rained and sometimes. a spare pair of socks . I remember going in the snow.in my moccasin brown lace up school shoes but it was London so the roads were rarely covered in deep snow.
