To wonder who knows your true hair colour

PorridgeLove · 27/09/2021 03:47

Do you also feel that hardly anyone knows your true hair colour?
Would you try your true hair colour before turning grey?

I am early forties and I wonder if it would be shocking to people around me. Everyone would describe me as a blonde, but I don't really think that is accurate.

I guess the polite way to describe my hair is medium ash blonde. I'd call it dishwater coloured. Since I am 19, I have never had my true hair colour. Always blonder, lighter or once or twice with reddish highlights.

I never look very done up. I do make-up once a month and never do anything fancy with my hair. My clothes are business casual or smart casual when I am at the office.
Really wondering why I bother with the hair colour.

I'm 48 and my hair is white.

I used to be dark brown. Got my first grey at 19 and had been dyeing it ever since.
I've been growing it out for six months now as I got fed up with dyeing it weekly.
Liberating! As pp mentioned, your skin tone changes with age and I get many compliments about my white/silver.

Eh?

The whole world!

Grellbunt · 27/09/2021 08:07

@Mercedes519

Completely. Embraced the natural colour of my silver/white hair. Get loads of compliments which actually makes me slightly sad….because I am still bucking a trend being my natural colour in my forties.

The amount of women who tell me they wish they could do what I did but feel trapped in a constant cycle of colouring because of the pressure (clearly from other women as on this thread!) to stay ‘young’. Angry

Yep Depressing Poor Sarah Jessica Parker recently- looking amazing but absolutely slated as "letting herself go" Pathetic
Just10moreminutesplease · 27/09/2021 08:10

Everyone, my hair is my natural colour and soooo much healthier than when I used to colour it in my teens.

I haven’t started to go grey yet and I’m not sure what I’ll do when that happens.

Kerberos · 27/09/2021 08:12

Everyone who's seen me :)

I'm 45. I don't mind if I look it. 45 year old women have grey hair. In my case it manifests as two pure white streaks round my face and the rest peppered through.

I stopped dying it just before the pandemic. Lockdown came at a perfect time for me to complete 18 months of growing it out. My hair is in far better condition and I love it.

reluctantbrit · 27/09/2021 08:14

Everyone who sees me sees my natural hair colour, I may use a semi-permanent once in a blue moon but more for fun, not to hide the grey.

Everyone their own, I find it sad that women feel they have to colour to hide the grey.

Member984815 · 27/09/2021 08:14

I've mostly always had my natural colour , so everyone knows what it is , try it and if you don't like it you can colour it again

So sorry, Harlan, this referred to Keanu Reeves. Your post got caught up in the middle of my posts to QueenBee. None of it referred to you. Just ignore.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 27/09/2021 08:16

No one cares what your hair looks like. I have dyed mine occasionally over the years and now its brown and grey. I don't intend to pay loads of money and spend loads of time to try and pretend I'm something I'm not.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 27/09/2021 08:17

@RainbowMum11

I am early 40s and don't colour my hair, brunette with a couple of silver hairs but not enough to start the whole colouring thing
Same. I am 44 and only have a handful of greys, so I've never felt the need (apart from messing around with box dyes and henna in my teens Hmm) I am actually quite looking forward to going greyer, I think it can look lovely
SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 27/09/2021 08:19

I have very black hair that no one thinks for a second is dyed and are very surprised when I tell them.

My natural colour is dark brown (but I haven't had anywhere near that in a good 15 years I'd say).

I couldn't imagine not have black hair now. It feels like part of my identity and is the think I am recognised for (physically) the most.

BiBabbles · 27/09/2021 08:36

There are some people I grew up with who might be surprised by my natural hair colour - though not if they paid attention to my eyebrows.

My hair hasn't been dyed since I was a teenager, so everyone knows I'm charcoal-dark brown with the occasional grey (though, I have found my grey hairs do shed more easily than my browns -- or maybe I just notice those more).

PattyPan · 27/09/2021 08:40

I’ve never dyed my hair and can’t see myself doing so even to cover greys. Can’t be bothered!

Looubylou · 27/09/2021 08:49

Everyone, dark brown, with a few whites. I'm 52. People have always assumed it is dyed - even now with a few whites. I don't plan to colour it, ever.

thetesdybears · 27/09/2021 08:51

I'm 35 not had my hair coloured since I was 19. Have a bit of a fear now about getting it done. Do have a few greys starting to creep in but I'm years off having to dye it because it's going grey thankfully.

CMOTDibbler · 27/09/2021 08:52

Everyone who sees me - haven't dyed it in 10 years. If people think that not having white/grey long hair ages me, then so what!

Froppysue · 27/09/2021 08:52

I’ve not dyed mine for years, it’s definitely changing and it looks a lot darker now than it ever was, really hate it tbh! Plus I seem to have missed grey and gone straight to pure white strands (as my dc lovingly point out) - starting to worry I’m going to look like Cruella soon!

Shirleyphallus · 27/09/2021 08:55

Everyone knows your real hair colour. No one is ever able to absolutely cover the roots, so those blondes who have ashy or mousy roots - it’s obvious that’s their real colour

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/09/2021 09:01

Anyone who looks at me.

Fading strawberry blonde with some very pale blond/white- that's my grey.

Never dyed it and can't be bothered to start now!

Finfintytint · 27/09/2021 09:06

I gave up with dye years ago. I have black hair but it is 50% silver now. I’m 54 and quite like the look. Can’t be arsed anymore with colour and really don’t care what others think. My DH certainly wouldn’t dye his hair so why should I?

Councilworker · 27/09/2021 09:06

My hair is my natural reddish brown with a sprinkling of silver. Nobody expects my husband to dye his beard or remaining hair and he's not "letting himself go" if he doesn't so why would I be letting myself go for doing/not doing the same? Apart from you know...sexism
In fact Just for Men etc is generally considered a bit of a joke, the idea of men dyeing their hair is seen by society as a bit of a strange thing to do. But it's expected for women.
It's time consuming expensive double standards and I don't want to play along.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/09/2021 09:07

Not even I know my real hair colour - not seen it in years, lol. I just know I don’t like it. And these days, don’t want to see grey either. A friend embraced her hair grey recently and looks ten years older - no, thanks! Been all colours over the years, it’s blonde and pink just now…

Grellbunt · 27/09/2021 09:23

Are you a Strictly presenter?!
Justcashnosweets · 27/09/2021 09:24

I havn't dyed my hair in about 10 years. Mostly because its so thin I'm scared of it fallng out! I still get asked occasionally what dye I use on it as its quite a nice red/brown colour ( with a sprinkling of greys).
