I’ve stolen someone’s shopping. Do I own up?!

I’ve name changed for this. I feel absolutely awful….

My shopping was delivered tonight.
As I was putting the bags in the house, the delivery driver told me that my “meat” bag was on the top of the tray of bags.

I wasn’t really paying much attention to what was in the bag, but I do remember thinking that it was heavy that I didn’t remember ordering that much meat…. I then briefly thought DH must’ve added it on.
I did think to myself, I wonder if this is even ours, but brushed it off as me just over thinking.

Once the driver had gone and I was unpacking the bags, I was checking off my items against the delivery sheet and realised the items infact weren’t on the list.

I checked with DH and he hadn’t ordered them, so we have been given a bag of meats by mistake.

We have….
2 x pack of chicken breasts
1 x pack of diced chicken
2 x pack of sirloin steak
2 x pack 20% fat beef mince
1 x pack 5% fat beef mince
1 x pack pork meat balls

I feel really awful about it now. I should’ve spoken up at the time.
I was rushing and just trying to get my bags in the house as quickly as I could.
DH has often added things to our shop last minute and I did just think he’d most likely done the same this week.

So what do I do now. Do I contact the supermarket and take the items back?
What if these items belong to someone old / vulnerable and they were reliant on them…

I’ve stolen someone’s shopping and I feel shit about it now.

Just ring them. They'll either let you keep it or come and collect it. I've been left someone else's booze before, which they did come back to get.

Allycott · 26/09/2021 23:02

20% fat mince? Disgusting! Throw it out for the foxes

OneTC · 26/09/2021 23:04

Unsteal it by telling them.

Also you haven't deprived anyone of anything

HelloDulling · 26/09/2021 23:04

Why are you feeling guilty? It’s their mistake, not yours. Ring them in the morning; when it happened to me the driver realised when he got to the next stop, and came back. I had someone else’s Christmas savoury nibbles.

At least it’s not just me they came back for, was starting to wonder!
Allycott · 26/09/2021 23:07

Just decided - op is being stupid. What do you REALLY think is going to happen? Grow up and stop showing off. You got yourself a freebie.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/09/2021 23:07

There is NOTHING to feel guilty about Thanks

Chilla. Dude

RachyRoo1 · 26/09/2021 23:07

@HelloDulling

Why are you feeling guilty?

Because I did think to myself, I wonder if this is ours, and I feel like I should have said something then.

I didn’t because I just assumed DH had added it last minute.

I should’ve know he wouldn’t really order all of that meat. I feel like I have stolen it now as I had the opportunity to hand it back and I didn’t do it.

I had a whole extra chicken. Emailed customer services and said I was happy to pay as we would use it. Was told to keep it and no charge. I agree with another pp that it does help possibly the other customer who calls to say part of my order is missing. (Although are the stock systems that sophisticated! )

TheHouseILiveIn · 26/09/2021 23:07

I wouldn't bother calling because these days you'd probably be put on hold for an hour if you are lucky. Let them call you. They won't ask for the money back. It sounds like you have gained from this so no refund is needed. If you had been swapped with a vegan's shopping then you would have been due some money back and I would have recommended phoning them then.

AngelaChasesBestLife · 26/09/2021 23:08

This happened to my Mum a few weeks back. She phoned the supermarket and they sent a manager in a car to collect it.

Bloody hell, tightwads! I'm guessing this was Tesco
Milkbottlelegs · 26/09/2021 23:10

You can call them but they won’t do anything. Then won’t come and collect it and they won’t deliver another bag to the customer who’s shopping you have. Unfortunately I have been in their position many times!

ImFree2doasiwant · 26/09/2021 23:10

The supermarket won't take it from you to the "owner", they'll bin it.

The other people will have it replaced

RachyRoo1 · 26/09/2021 23:10

That’s precisely what I don’t want to happen, I don’t want to have gained from this.
I’m probably being really soft, but I just can’t shake the worry of some poor old / vulnerable ale person going without now, all because I didn’t bloody say something!

This is such a non event. You can call them but you don’t need to. The other customer won’t pay for what they haven’t got. They won’t take the meat back off you now anyway for hygiene reasons. They’ll
Just tell you to keep it

Summersun2020 · 26/09/2021 23:10

Oh ffs, turn in the martyrdom 🙄 the supermarket will tell you to keep up, they’ll reimburse the other customer and all will be fine. All the hand wringing and feeling wracked with guilt is silly.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/09/2021 23:11

It happened to me, took ages on the phone for them to tell me to keep it .

I would not be happy having food that's been in a customer's house. Pharmacies aren't allowed to accept drugs that have left the store even briefly because they don't know how how they have been stored. They have to destroy them
Holskey · 26/09/2021 23:11

Personally, I'd be pretty annoyed if my items were delivered to me after being in the possession of a previous customer. That'd be worse than waiting an extra day or so for my meat.

You've done nothing wrong.

TurnUpTurnip · 26/09/2021 23:12

They definitely gave it to the owner in my case, the man actually came back with the person receipt and it had been circled with all the stuff that was missing 😯

Use your head, why would somebody go without,? They'll be complaining they haven't received their pork chops

It is silly, it’s only because I did think to myself that it might not be ours, and I wish I’d said something there and then.

You felt so guilty about it but didn’t bother trying to phone for over an hour 🤔

😂😂. This happens from time to time. We always phone (immediately!!) and usually get told to keep it

Was it very soon after you realising? How soon?
