To get an expensive coffee machine?

I'm looking at the Sage barrista express. Anyone have experience of the sage machines? They are soooo expensive I don't want to buy a big white elephant. Those of you who love your coffee A LOT and have splashed out on a serious piece of kit, please guide me.

And I know IABU to buy such an expensive item when my little old (completely used to death/broken) Nespresso machine gave me a good cup of coffee to now.

I LOVE the Sage Barista Bean to cup machine… it’s amazing! If you like good coffee I’d definitely get it!

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 26/09/2021 21:36

I am on my third sage barista. I have had them over the course of about ten years. They are amazing although I find something goes wrong after around 3-4 years, but we do use ours several time a day (5-6 times most days). Definitely worth the money and I never buy coffee out now as it doesn't compare. I worked out it is cheaper than buying takeaway coffees anyway!

Mytupenceworth · 26/09/2021 21:36

Delongi bean to cup machine here too, it's six years old now and still going strong

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 26/09/2021 21:37

We’ve recently bought a sage bambino, which is the cheaper version of the one you’re looking at, without the bean hopper/grinder part.
We’re loving it, makes a really nice cup of coffee. I find that I still use the nespresso machine mid week though when I’m busy working from home and just want to grab a quick coffee in between meetings.

We’ve got a deLonghi for a similar price. We also have a Pact Coffee subscription for under a tenner a month that delivers us beans that sees us through the month.

Wombat96 · 26/09/2021 21:42

@AnyFucker

We have a DeLonghi Magnifica bean to cup machine. It gets used daily and is fairly easy to maintain. It was a good investment.
Yep, we do too. It's fab.

Saying that, we have a Sage tabletop oven & it's amazing. So I'd consider the coffee machine but it's probably too big for the space.

noctu · 26/09/2021 21:48

We bought a Siemens eq9 s700 (fully automatic coffee machine) in the very first lockdown, when our holiday was cancelled and my birthday was coming up. Disgusting price but it's amazing, for a brief moment on a morning it feels like I live in a hotel -- put mug underneath, select coffee type, select coffee beans, jab button, done.

PathOfLeastResitance · 26/09/2021 21:58

I have a sage and I love it. Was a little bit sick at the price but got a good deal on Black Friday and it is one of my favourite things. Some days, higher on the list than most humans.

NightVinca · 27/09/2021 08:00

Yanbu. I've only got a cheap machine but don't see expensive ones as a waste of money if you love coffee and can afford it. A lot of things that taste nice are unhealthy if consumed frequently, but coffee isn't!

ahola · 27/09/2021 08:07

I hesitate to say this, but if you like Nespresso, you don't like coffee!

We have a krups, it's ten years old and been fantastic.

horseymum · 27/09/2021 08:09

My dh is a total coffee snob- aero press all the way, less than £30 I think!

DeepaBeesKit · 27/09/2021 08:15

We looked at the sage models but decided they were more for people who like playing around fine tuning the grind etc.

We got a melitta CI touch which is a more automated job. It makes fantastic coffee and is very easy to use. It doesnt look as coffee shop pretty as the sage (imho) but we LOVE it.

DeepaBeesKit · 27/09/2021 08:18

Nespresso are awful! When you've tried a better machine, even using pods where you can put your own better quality coffee in, nespresso just make a shit brew. They are machines for people who aren't big into coffee and want ease.

BubblesThaDragoon · 27/09/2021 08:19

Do it OP - my last housemate had a sage she kindly let me use- it was amazing! it’s been horrible going back to instant after getting my own place 🥲

PostItNow · 27/09/2021 08:22

We have a Melitta - Dh would only agree to getting rid of the Nespresso if the new coffee machine was as easy to use - ie one step. We worked out that we'd break even on costs when compared to the Nespresso after a couple of years of use. Coffee is fabulous. We still use a separate frother though as it's just easier.

baffledcoconut · 27/09/2021 08:24

Get it! Enjoy it!

I’ve got a nespresso and use reusable pods. It’s fine, better than instant. Not as good as a decent coffee properly made but it fills a bit of a gap and just does. Better than nothing.

But if you’ve got the option of a lovely one, absolutely do it.

DeepaBeesKit · 27/09/2021 08:24

Oh and I work completely from home in an area where there is no coffee shop. If I was in an office buying coffee, I would probably spend around £5 a day on two cups.at home I would estimate my cost per cup (decent beans, milk, electricity and maintenance eg filter cartridges etc) is max £1 a cup, so per working day the machine saves me around £3. It doesnt take long to cover the cost of an £800 machine at that rate. With DH using it a couple of days a week too, plus weekends, it's easily paid for itself in a year.

Mbear · 27/09/2021 08:25

I have a sage and it is fab, bit faffy to start with (the delonghi we had previously was a bit more automated, but still good) but loved it and wouldn’t be without it, rarely get a take away now as prefer mine. We did do as Sage advise though and we buy decent beans as they recommend.

PostItNow · 27/09/2021 08:25

I would have agreed with your dh until we got our Melitta - same coffee beans, freshly ground - the difference is massive.
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/09/2021 08:35

A slightly off the wall suggestion. We bought a La Pavoni Professional lever machine 27 years ago. Used multiple times every day. It's been serviced a couple of times and works perfectly. It takes a bit of effort (and careful chouce of beans and grind) but the coffee it produces is excellent.

k1233 · 27/09/2021 09:04

I've got a Delonghi too. Very impressed that they fixed the steam wand out of warranty. It had an air leak. Mine is a lower end model (doesn't grind the beans) but makes a great coffee. 6 years on and going strong. I don't like pod machines, they're not nice coffee. You'll definitely notice the difference with a bean machine.

TimeToLose8 · 27/09/2021 09:09

Another delonghi fan here. 350 euros well spent.

CoffeeWithCheese · 27/09/2021 09:14

Delonghi here - don't know which model it is but it's got the bean hopper and detachable milk carafe you keep in the fridge. Bought for my birthday during lockdown 1 when all the coffee shops were closed.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 27/09/2021 09:15

We've got a Jura bean to cup. DH loves it (I don't drink coffee, but everyone who visits seems to like it). It looks nice and is easy to clean, so I'd vote for that one 😂

WeeM · 27/09/2021 09:16

We got a delonghi bean to cup a few years ago and love it, makes great coffee. So def do it if you fancy one, now I’ve googled the Sage one I want that Grin
