Has anyone else had them. Or is it in my imagination. My sleep is becoming worse and worse. And no ear plugs don't help.

This is a very unusual side effect of the drug, speak with your prescriber first thing in the morning x

Smartiepants79 · 26/09/2021 20:07

What dosage are you on? And what for.
I take low doses for anxiety and have never had what you describe.
I do think the higher dose affected my sleep and dreams but low dose helps me sleep.

underneaththeash · 26/09/2021 20:07

@Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed that is not a normal side effect - you MUST contact your GP in the morning.

TheVolturi · 26/09/2021 20:10

Never had that.

IceLace100 · 26/09/2021 20:11

Propranolol is a beta blocker. They slow your heart by blocking adrenaline.

They don't affect your brain in the way that anti-depressants or anti-psychotics do.

You should probably call 111 and see what they say. Please seek medical help.

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 26/09/2021 20:11

It's 40mg I only take it at night. None during the day

OP posts:
TheProvincialLady · 26/09/2021 20:15

I have never experienced that. I try to take them early in the evening if I need them before bed as they give me funny dreams. As others have said, you need to speak to a HCP about this.

gobbynorthernbird · 26/09/2021 20:16

Not propranolol, but a different beta blocker gave me auditory hallucinations. I had to change meds.

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 26/09/2021 20:18

It's music I hear not voices or suicidal thoughts. If that changes anything

OP posts:
Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 26/09/2021 20:19

Was it voices or music? X

OP posts:
UndertheCedartree · 26/09/2021 20:22

Sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations too. I would speak to your HCP as you may need a dose change or different medication. It is not good if it is stopping you sleeping.

Greybeardy · 26/09/2021 20:36

Auditory hallucinations are a rare SE of propranolol. Probably best to speak to your GP/whoever prescribed it.

Kittii · 26/09/2021 20:39

Why do you take propranolol? If for anxiety, it's likely the anxiety itself is causing the tinnitus. I get auditory hallucinations in the night when I'm particularly stressed.

LagunaBubbles · 26/09/2021 20:47

It might not be the propranolol that's causing the hallucinations so I would definitely seek medical advice

gobbynorthernbird · 26/09/2021 20:48

It was ticking.
Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 27/09/2021 09:37

It's to try and prevent migraines. I take quitiapene as well.

elenaf · 27/09/2021 09:46

I was on propranolol for about a month recently, two 40mg doses to prevent migraine. My sleep got worse and worse, and in the last week I was wide awake till 6am and awake again at 7am. Taking Nytol, valerian and melatonin (on different nights) did nothing to help. It was hell.

The GP said I could stop the drug and sleep was better that night and perfect the night after.

Definitely talk to your GP asap.

Thanks 👍. Nice to know I'm not going completely crazy. I am going to talk to doctor tomorrow. If I can get an appointment

Could it be caused by whatever condition you're taking quetiapine for?

Ibleedibreedibreaatfeed · 29/09/2021 13:06

It's a new symptom. Been on my other meds for years. I have stopped taking it for 2 days now and the halluncinations seem to have nearly gone! Now just waiting to hear back from GP about what to try next.

kalidasa · 29/09/2021 13:12

I was on it for a few weeks years ago. It gave me bad headaches but was worth it for the calming effect. I don't remember sleep problems with it but at the time I was taking quite a strong sedative at bed time anyway. You should def speak to the GP, maybe there's a different beta blocker you could try.

Why are you on quetiapine? Its an antipsychotic drug (so, for example for people with hallucinations) but can be used in small doses to help anxiety.
Spidey66 · 29/09/2021 13:33

Sorry I see you've kind of answered my question ie you're not taking quetiapine for a previously diagnosed psychotic illness. At least I think that's what you mean. Why are you taking quetiapine?

Sorry for focusing on this....im a mental health nurse and trying to establish, as I suspect @ladyoflittleleisure is, wether this is part of an underlying mental health issue x

Herecomesspring1 · 29/09/2021 14:07

I take 40mg as and when required for anxiety attacks, it does give me bad dreams. I also get song lyrics on repeat in my head in my sleep - they usually stop when I wake up and get out of bed. Having song lyrics on repeat over and over is fairly normal for me when I'm anxious (day or night), it's pretty mentally draining to be honest.

Although, last week I woke up to The Birdie Song on repeat in my head and I literally said out loud, 'of fuck off, now you're just taking the piss!' Grin

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 29/09/2021 14:12

@Spidey66 yes, that's what I was trying to establish too. I didn't see where OP answered this question though?
