Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

Wow that is truly naff. The reasoning, I mean. The name is pretty bad but the 'meaning' behind it is dreadful. Do they not realise they are naming a human person, not a coming up with a term for some kind of new age ceremony?

TwinsandTrifle · 23/09/2021 19:43

Jesus. Then get a tattoo of a stormy rain cloud, or a picture commissioned to hang somewhere. Don't inflict it on a child for the rest of his life.

It makes them sound really egotistical.

Rosesareyellow · 23/09/2021 19:43

Storm or stormy are nice imo. But Stormy-Water Cloud Confused very try hard - and yet what they are trying so hard to do isn’t entirely clear…
I generally find it annoying when people hyphenate two names that don’t really go or are a bit of a mouthful or should blatantly just be first and middle name and insist you say the whole thing.
Can you just make ‘Stormy’ happen? Stormy-Water will never stick anyway, his friends won’t call him that.

Laiste · 23/09/2021 19:43

You know - even just reading the bit of this thread since you have revealed the name has made the words Stormy Water start to feel familiar as i've read it so many times :)

Twizbe · 23/09/2021 19:44

Oh gosh, I can see why you're struggling. That's a terribly name.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 23/09/2021 19:44

Immediately made me think of the song Stormy Weather which I think would be preferable to the actual name. Their reasons are just so twee and embarrassing.

DowntonCrabby · 23/09/2021 19:45

Fair play OP, you’re right, it’s awful. Are they kicking off if people try to shorten it to storm?

MimiDaisy11 · 23/09/2021 19:45

Awful. Poor kid. I’d feel the same as you OP.
There’re names which aren’t to your taste and then there are just ridiculous names.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 23/09/2021 19:45

That really is bad. Poor little bugger.

Rosesareyellow · 23/09/2021 19:46

Stormy-Water doesn’t even make sense.
It’s stormy waters.
Or are the two unrelated?
They liked the name Stormy and they liked the name Water and they couldn’t choose?

TSSDNCOP · 23/09/2021 19:47

Well, it's certainly unusual.

You and your DH on the other hand are going to wind up being Grandad and Nana Dicks if you don't get over yourselves.

Glssr195726113493 · 23/09/2021 19:50

I’ve got Crowded House in my head.

TSSDNCOP · 23/09/2021 19:50

Actually I'm curious, were they actually allowed to register him as that? Have you seen the birth certificate; it might actually say Name: Pete

TheKeatingFive · 23/09/2021 19:50

I’m sure you’ll get used to it

Adelais · 23/09/2021 19:50

Awful name.. poor kid. Would they let you shorten it to Storm? That’s not so bad.

Miriam101 · 23/09/2021 19:51

It's terrible OP. I'm sorry. But it'll become Stormy and that'll be that. He'll just be changing it by deed poll as soon as he's able

Yogsgirl · 23/09/2021 19:51

Maybe you could call him Thor for a nickname?

TwinsandTrifle · 23/09/2021 19:51

Do they think they sound terribly clever and pleased with themselves, as they tell their tale of the wonderful name? OP, you can't say anything, but I really feel for you, and completely understand your husband's reaction.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 23/09/2021 19:51

Ridiculous name. Poor child! Sad

whynotwhatknot · 23/09/2021 19:52

The reasoning is even worse than the name

hes not a birthday card poem hes a human

Monkeymilkshake · 23/09/2021 19:52

Poor kid!

Hopeisnotastrategy · 23/09/2021 19:53

DH and I are sitting here with Smoke On The Water going through our heads. You have our sympathy.💕

Unsubscribed · 23/09/2021 19:54

He will eventually and inevitably be known as Storm, which is fine.
So OP and DH need to hang in there until the the novelty of the full (ridiculous) hyphened name wares off.

ivfbabymomma1 · 23/09/2021 19:54

Aside from the water cloud bit I think storm is a proper cool name! I once met a girl called storm Johnson & I adored her name!!! If I ever have a girl.....

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/09/2021 19:54
