What are your favourite things about your children?

I think Mumsnet can sometimes give quite a negative impression about having children, because people are (understandably) so much more likely to post about the tough times than the good ones. I thought it might be nice to have some balance by talking about the best bits!

So let me know - what are your favourite things about your children?

I have a son, nearly ten months old. Some of my favourite things are:

When he waves at you and you wave back and it makes him beam all over his face.

When he’s excited about something and he stamps his feet like he’s doing the cucuracha.

How interested he is in everything.

The way he gets hysterics when you say ‘achoo!’

The breathless, snorty gasps of excitement he does whenever he sees me or his dad.

The way he kisses me on the cheek with his whole mouth open and it’s so gross but so cute.

Let me know yours!

@ivfbabymomma1 my ds and our chihuahua adore each other too

Booboosweet · 22/09/2021 22:37

My dd has hair the colour of an autumn leaf.

ivfbabymomma1 · 22/09/2021 22:40

@MintyGreenDream aww adorable 😍 people always said I'd have a nightmare with the chihuahuas when my son was born and they couldn't have been more wrong!!

Antsinyourpanta · 22/09/2021 22:41

My 11 year old DS has always been really good natured and smiley since he was a baby. He is cheeky and funny and kind, and still gives me loads of hugs. he also farts a lot which makes me laugh Blush

Although my 15 year old is a typical teen she has a great sense of humour and regularly has hysterics for no apparent reason.

Proudboomer · 22/09/2021 22:42

That I have managed to get both to adulthood without fucking it up.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 22/09/2021 22:43

I have teenagers. I love their passion for everything they do. They want to save the world by recycling. The won’t accept inappropriate comments in their lessons. They like a certain style of clothing so will buy a million versions of it.
I also like the way they live in the moment. When they get their wages they spend it all in ten minutes or when they buy something nice they eat it or use it all right away. I guess they are giant toddlers at heart Grin

Ohhelppp · 22/09/2021 22:43

I loved everything about both my DV when they were 10 months… those days were dreamy compared to 8 & 4 😬

user1471604848 · 22/09/2021 22:45

It's so lovely and heartwarming to read these.
I thought I'd never become a mum after years of infertility and 10 IVFs, but now have 18-month old twins.

I can't even begin to describe how much I love them, but they're both so funny, cheeky, kind, cuddly, and delighted with themselves when they learn something new.

Ohhelppp · 22/09/2021 22:47

But you’re right, positivity is the key. So for DD:
Her auburn hair.
Her chattiness- she’ll quite literally talk to anyone.
Her sense of humour and her dirty laugh when she finds something funny.

DS:
His eyes - amazing shape & colour, like his Dad.
His comedy timing. He’s genuinely funny.
His kindness - he talks to bugs and rescues ladybirds.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/09/2021 22:48

They are both very loving in different ways.
DD is very sensitive she has a very gentle manner, a beautiful smile, she is nearly 13 she loves when I kiss her on the head goodnight.
DS has lots of extra needs but is learning fast, he needs a lot of attention and thrives on positive reinforcements.
Doing the school pickup is a special one on one time I love hearing about their day, giving a cuddle if it was bad and a high five if it was good.
Lovely thread. ❤

VitalsStable · 22/09/2021 22:48

I have a 16 year old DS. He is super handsome and sporty and seems to attract people to him. His teacher says she imagines he'll be a cult leader when he is older due to his effect on people. I'm not sure I should be so proud of that Confused.

DD 7 is just the best, sporty like her brother and a proper tough cookie but she loves cuddles and apparently I'm her favourite parent, although I'm sure she tells her father this as well.

DialsMavis · 22/09/2021 22:49

DS (18) is full of fun and loves me lots, he listens to my advice and is just a good boy. We have grown up together and are great friend, he has just left for uni and I really miss him.

DD (10) is hilarious, intense, dedicated, wears her heart on her sleeve...but doesn't listen to a word I say!

Skysblue · 22/09/2021 22:51

What a nice thread.

I love the deep sincerity of the cuddles, the way he looks at the world just like I do and understands the way I feel instantly without words (wish DH could do that!)

I love all the fun places I’ve gone to with him - adult life was so boring but having a child has reintroduced me to bouncy casltes, waterslides, play farms, tree climbing, laser quest, playstation, bead making etc

I love the hilarious things he says…

I love the purity of his morals and how he doesn’t do stuff just because everyone else does: kids don’t care about tradition or looking cool they care about fun and comfort and he helps me be more like that.

I love the way he laughs with his whole heart.

I love the way he loves me just how I am.

PalacesOfMontezuma · 22/09/2021 22:54

DS is 8.
He gives the best hugs.
He has a really strong moral compass and will always stand up for what's right.
He's so inquisitive, has to know how everything works and has the most amazing general knowledge.

DD is 5.
She's hilarious.
She's got bags of initiative - if something needs doing she gets on with it without needing to be told.
She's incredibly caring and generous.

Holskey · 22/09/2021 22:56

Lovely thread!

My 15-month-old has the cheekiest smile, he will flash me one of his smiles as he's about to approach something I've told him to leave alone.

He wraps his legs tight around me when I first pick him up in the morning.

He passes me books to read him. Always too close to my face. And he sometimes "reads" to me too.

Everything about him really.

Schoolio1 · 22/09/2021 22:59

@peachgreen

Bless you and your little angel
💜

meow1989 · 22/09/2021 23:06

3 year old ds:

  • his funny little old man way of saying things ("I'm certainly going to have more breakfast") even if I have to ask him not to call me "morher" which he then does more because he thinks its funny.
  • his joy for simple things like roly polys, running down hills, spinning round till you get dizzy
  • feeling his warm little hand in mine when he holds it
  • he makes up songs which narrate what we're doing ("going to the park, going to the park adventure with my mummy, mummy is kind mummy is calm, going to the park with mother")
  • he asks me if he can keep me and if I can always be his mummy because I'm the best in the world
  • his sense of humour which is really coming out lately. He's a cheeky little sod and finds it hilarious.
  • seeing him learn and achieve and explore makes me so proud
  • his different voices for different cuddly toys
  • how affectionate he is - kisses and cuddles galore!
  • how ridiculously cute he is in dungarees
  • the smell of him! Especially at night when he is a sweaty little thing, I love the smell of his breath too Blush

I could go on for pages but that'll do Smile

EmeraldShamrock · 22/09/2021 23:11

DS lying in bed beside me said I'm not sure if I love you or granny more you both make me feel happy but I don't know how to measure love. ❤
He is obsessive with calculations.

comingintomyown · 22/09/2021 23:13

@thistimelastweek

My children are adults now.

It's been a journey. Highs and lows.

But they have always made my heart sing.

Yes , this
Famousfrays · 22/09/2021 23:17

My 3 year old DS has such beautiful big brown eyes. DH and I have blue eyes so I’m not sure where or how they come about but they make me melt. His nickname is Bamm Bamm because he’s always knocking things over/running into thing etc and every time he does it he turns and gives us such a cheeky face. He’s an incredible big brother and is already so kind and compassionate. He helps me feed and clean out our animals and pick our fruit and veg. He loves nature and wants to learn everything about it. I love watching him discover the world.

My 1 year old DS has his dads deep blue eyes and really white blonde hair and he’s so chubby so he looks like a little cherub. He’s always happy. He’s recently started being able to climb over things and he’s always off in our garden discovering. He gives big sloppy kisses before bed every night. He’s so strong minded and he knows what he wants. He’s got so much personality already.

I’m expecting our 3rd DC (not sure of the sex) early next month and I’m so excited to see who this little one turns out to be. Parenting has honestly been the best thing I’ve ever done. I know this is about DC, but I also love seeing how my DH is as a father. He never had a good father figure and always worried about becoming a dad himself. But there’s no one in earth I’d rather be doing this with, he’s the most amazing dad and our DC love the bones of him.

AliasGrape · 22/09/2021 23:19

14 month old DD is just perfection. Honestly I can’t believe we got so lucky. I love how much she loves cuddles, she really snuggles in and says ‘ahhhh’. I love how she busies herself pottering about emptying everything she can chattering away to herself whilst she does it and then gives herself a big clap.

I love that she thinks cows say ‘booo’ and that she’s obsessed with ducks and yells ‘ahh ahh’ at them (quack quack), but also at pigeons and chickens which she also ‘quacks’ at.

I love how much she likes to ‘help’ with everything I do.

I love how fearless she is, she’s gone from my clingy lockdown baby who would freak out if someone so much as looked at her, to happily marching to the centre of a crowded room waving at everyone and not a bit phased.

I don’t love how obsessed she is with trying to get her hands on my phone but I do love her delighted cackle when I forget to leave it out of reach and she manages to grab it.

There’s so many.

PhoboPhobia · 22/09/2021 23:25

My DD is 23 and I love how passionate she is about the things she loves. I live that she is a loyal friend and she is extremely kind. She also totally gets me.

DS is 17 and the thing I live most is how much he makes me laugh. Silly little jokes and acting daft. He is also starting to open up a bit from being a closed book teen so we have started having some chats about life stuff.

CoodleMoodle · 22/09/2021 23:29

I love that DD7 adores reading, just like I did. She's an exceptional reader and I'm so proud of her. She's funny, sweet, beautiful, kind and ridiculously clever.

I love that DS3 bounces when he's excited or happy. He's my little kangaroo! He's also funny, crazy, clever and absolutely adorable from head to toe.

But more than any of that, I love how much they love one another. They fight all the time but that moment when DD comes out of her classroom at the end of the school day and makes a beeline for DS, and he's jumping up and down after having his nose pressed against the window watching for her... It's lovely.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 23/09/2021 06:45

My baby girl is very rough and tumble in her post and I love seeing her personality emerge as time goes on
Also she's just figured out how to walk and carry something confidently (13m) and if she drops it she whispers what sounds like 'shit' under her breath every time

MilkywayMonarch22 · 23/09/2021 06:50

Play* not post
