No wonder why people get annoyed with those on furlough

I work in a social club in the evening. I do have a day time job.
Before covid I worked Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
I have been very grateful that I was paid furlough during lockdown.
At the beginning of September the club finally opened fully.
Glad to be back working missed the company.

This is now my aibu the girl who works on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday
who was paid furlough for those hours has come back and will only work
on the Monday as she doesn't want to work the other days.
Her words 'furlough was money for nothing'. She also has a job during the day.
Our employer isn't allowed to hire anyone else yet until she puts it in writing
that she will only work Mon

That’s just one person, don’t think it’s fair to use her behaviour to justify sweeping knee jerk resentment towards everyone who was put on furlough. Clearly she’s unreasonable but so are you for making the question about furlough generally rather than one annoying colleague.

JustLyra · 21/09/2021 18:13

She’s decided she no longer wants to work three evenings a week on top of a full time job.

Sounds like furlough made her re-prioritise and she’s likes having Thursday and Saturday evenings free of work.

seaandsandcastles · 21/09/2021 18:14

What’s the problem? She’s decided she values her time more and wants to reduce her days.

Theunamedcat · 21/09/2021 18:16

They arnt paying her for those days though right? There is nothing stopping your boss getting temp cover for her?

Coffeeisnecessary · 21/09/2021 18:16

Our business had this problem with staff not wanting to come back to their previous hours, some had months of furlough while they earned loads on other jobs then when we reopened being really sketchy about what they wanted to do, then eventually resigning (and taking all the holiday pay they had built up whilst of furlough) it was a real problem.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 21/09/2021 18:16

I was furloughed at some point and it made me prioritise Tim over money and I dropped my hours when I returned.

And I say she’s unreasonable for her comment and presumably letting her employer pay a portion of her furlough money for days she was intending to drop as soon as she returned to work. But it’s an odd circumstance for everyone, she might have wanted to return first before making her mind up.
WhenISnappedAndFarted · 21/09/2021 18:18

A lot of people I know who was furloughed is now in heavy debt because despite being paid 80% it wasn't enough to cover the bills etc

gardeninggirl68 · 21/09/2021 18:24

she will soon miss the money

seaandsandcastles · 21/09/2021 18:26

@gardeninggirl68

she will soon miss the money
Some things are more important than money.
JustLyra · 21/09/2021 18:27

@gardeninggirl68

she will soon miss the money
That’s a daft thing to say about a complete stranger. She’s obviously changed things so she doesn’t need it or she wouldn’t have cut her hours Confused
CorrBlimeyGG · 21/09/2021 18:28

This is no different from any other worker refusing to work their contracted hours. Why is the employer not taking disciplinary action?

She has the right to say she wants to change her hours. They have the right to say yes/no. Sounds like they said yes.
girlmom21 · 21/09/2021 18:29

She's reassessed her working hours and they no longer suit her, but as they were her working hours previously she was entitled to furlough pay.

She's also 1 of millions. I personally was pissed off when I got furloughed. I didn't feel it was money for doing nothing as I'd much rather have had the job security.

LukeEvansWife · 21/09/2021 18:29

Presumably someone else will get her job.

Not your problem.

But YABU to call her a girl unless
she’s older than 18

You missed the OP's penultimate sentence.

No I didn’t. She asked, they said yes and that she needs to put it in writing, so she is doing.
BrendaBubbles · 21/09/2021 18:49

Of course people will take advantage. The problem was keeping the scamscheme going so long, there has been zero excuse for it since at least June. If you can milk it then fill your boots, your taxes will be going up to pay for it eventually anyway.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/09/2021 18:52

I think this is why people shouldn't discuss their business with others - like all the threads where someone says 'Should I report my sister in law for getting xyz on Universal Credit when her husband drives a Ferrari and they holiday in St Lucia'. It's just bad vibes all round. Let people be.

How has she taken advantage?
flippertyop · 21/09/2021 18:57

Those people earning 80 percent also had no transport costs to get to work. Didn't need to drop children off at school saving costs. Couldn't eat out etc etc I can't understand how they can be in debt

Imnothereforthedrama · 21/09/2021 18:57

What she decided to drop her days but you somehow thing that’s why people get annoyed with the furlough?. I don’t understand if she wants to drop her days what’s that got to with anyone.

Footprintsonthemoon1 · 21/09/2021 18:57

Sorry I dont think shes done anything wrong. She doesnt want to work all hours anymore and maybe wants a better work life balance. Nothing wrong with that

Tooembarrassingtomention · 21/09/2021 18:59

The point is that she could have resigned those hours at any point. Doing it now has cost the employer and the country (so you) money

Is that ethical?
