Driving test aibu

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 20/09/2021 21:25

My DH failed his second driving test today and I am fuming (a little bit with him, but mainly with the woman who’s bloody fault it was 😡)

It has been 2 years in the making with covid making things slower anyway, massive wait times for tests and issues with driving instructors (whole other thread).

He failed because he had a major on an observation.

He had to stop and wait for a car reversing into the road on a corner out of a property, all fine until he was ready to go again, he did his obs and in that time the woman behind him decided he was taking too long and pulled out from behind him to overtake him. The examiner had to tell him to stop ( he obv would have done but he saw her moving before dh did).

That woman’s impatience and dangerous driving behind what was clearly a learner driver makes me so angry.

He now has to retake his theory because it runs out in two weeks, there is a ten week wait on that and then a 24 week wait after that for another test. I could cry.

Aibu to hate that woman with a passion?

It's a dick move on her part and ya definitely nbu. Whenever you see a learner they could be taking their test and the tests themselves are like golden fucking tickets these days. Anyone who fails is in for a lengthy wait and yes often will have to retake theory too. Hopefully your dh will be tip top perfect when he does finally get to do it again.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 20/09/2021 21:31

It's not dangerous driving to overtake someone. I'm sorry your DH failed but there's no "blame" here.

Porridgealert · 20/09/2021 21:37

I'm sorry your husband failed. Its such a bummer for him. But I sometimes think people are failed because the examiner doesn't feel confident in the car with them, rather than for one specific thing - unless what he did was unsafe, of course. But then that would leave the examiner with a lack of confidence.

VashtaNerada · 20/09/2021 21:38

I failed a test because another car cut me up dangerously on a motorway and the examiner spotted them a split second before me. I was Angry So frustrating.

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 20/09/2021 21:41

Really? kingsleyshacklebolt I am not a driver myself but pulling out of a queue of waiting cars whilst the road was clearing to overtake a learner driver on a corner who was obviously about to move as soon as safe to do so is not dangerous. I’m pretty sure she would have failed her test if she had been on one.

Try the app driving test cancellations 4 all you might be lucky and get a cancellation slot next week (yes I know how bad it is I have been going through this too but the app gets sooner tests very well if you set it to auto book for you). Good luck to him.

ISpyCobraKai · 20/09/2021 21:50

Its a dick move on her part, but he has to be able to deal with things like that.
Not everyone passes quickly, its just the way it goes.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2021 21:51

Your DH failed for two reasons;

  1. Taking too long/obstructing the flow of traffic.
  2. Not noticing the woman first.

Yes, she was a dick, but that's the point of driving tests - to be able to manoeuvre the vehicle safely, without causing an obstruction or hazard to other road users and being able to notice hazards more quickly than your DH did.

It's ultimately his fault, not hers. Had he not taken so long, she might not have become impatient. And he became a hazard himself as a result of not being observant.

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 20/09/2021 21:52

Thank you gowalkabout he has got the Testi app but I’m led to believe he can’t get a cancellation on this unless he has a test booked in already? It’s a nightmare, I hope you get yours soon too!

Yes. What a toxic mindset.

Shit happens. I failed my first test in similar circumstances - no woman but I took too long and failed on hesitation.

They were probably surprised you were on a motorway during a test Grin

Few points - you're not a driver so you are not posting from a position of knowledge.

Perhaps it was dangerous, perhaps it wasn't, who knows. People do daft/stupid/dangerous things on the road all the time and part of driving is anticipating the dick moves and driving accordingly, which your DH didn't do.

She wasn't on her test. He was.

I get the frustration - I have a son who is learning and has had his lessons so disrupted, we also had to travel miles and miles to a theory centre. But he needs to let this go and move on. The Testi app is good for getting last minute cancellations for theory and practical tests.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 20/09/2021 21:59

My ds failed today. Apparently he spent too long in the right lane. Over 2 roundabouts and past a bus stop. Then 3 right turns into the left lane so he kept right... In the wrong apparently..

Ginger1982 · 20/09/2021 22:00

Why can't you learn to drive?

MrsGarethSouthgate · 20/09/2021 22:03

@Thisisthelifewevebeengiven

Try www.driving-test-cancellations-4all.co.uk - yes you need to book a test first, but you can book one for a future date at a different location if you need to. Then use this website, and you can set parameters of which dates and locations you want a test at, and it will make the booking for you if it finds a suitable cancellation.

It really does work, and differs from the Testi app which sends a notification but you have to spot it in time and make the booking yourself.

feliciabirthgiver · 20/09/2021 22:14

Yes @MrsGarethSouthgate is spot on, this site is brilliant for getting a quicker test. Just get one booked for anywhere and anytime in the future and then their technology scans the test centre you have chosen every 15 mins for a cancellation, I've used them twice now and can highly recommend.

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 20/09/2021 22:15

Ginger1982 I have no desire to, why do you ask? My dh started to learn as an older driver for work reasons, the only way it affects me is the cost of it all and the time it takes away from being able to do other stuff when he is learning as well as having to lean on family members to co drive when he wants to practice in our own car. Does that mean I’m not entitled to feel annoyed?

I think I best take my toxic self away from the thread, thanks to those who offered advice and sympathy and I hope those that are having similar issues with wait times get some luck soon.

I thought theory test Centers were opening longer to deal with the backlog? DS managed to grab a theory test for the next day, and a cancellation practical tests. He's not on the ball about most things, but he really, really wanted to pass his driving test.

A different contractor has just taken over this month. So they have untrained staff, new offices, etc.

This ^

I know it is frustrating. I have a dc who passed their theory last Summer and, due to the lockdown wasn't then able to pick up lessons again at University and who just hasn't been able to get started. It is really difficult for learners at the moment and frustrating and expensive too, but your dh failed his own test. There are always idiots on the road - the examiner has to feel confident that the examinees keep their wits about them, and also that they are not taking too long and obstructing traffic through being over cautious / not ready. Your dh didn't convince the examiner of that.

Aibu to hate that woman with a passion?

Yes. What a toxic mindset.

Also, this ^

ThinWomansBrain · 20/09/2021 23:46

your husband will encounter bad drivers when he has passed his test and is driving independently - surely part of the testers' role is to judge whether his reactions to other drivers and road hazards is good enough to keep him and other road users safe?
Tester spotted the danger bofore your husband - how long was he supposed to give it to see when/if your husband would notice?

VashtaNerada · 21/09/2021 02:48

@HunterHearstHelmsley Grin I meant roundabout!! Perhaps getting confused between a motorway and a roundabout is why I failed now I think of it…
It’s years ago now and I did pass in the end but I still remember how gutted I was at the time. I had no minor faults on that test as well! And was almost back at the test centre. So OP, YANBU for feeling frustrated but he will pass at some point and you won’t feel as annoyed about it any more.

Porridgealert · 21/09/2021 03:00

Ozanj · 21/09/2021 06:21

That happens. It happens to me in normal driving and it happened to me in the test I passed. Your DH needs to get better at observations and react quickly. He’s the driver.
