Washing the right way?

wafflesandbeans · 20/09/2021 09:30

This is a deep argument which is causing conflict in my household.... Wink

When loading clothes into the washing machine, I insist that they should be the right way round aka the way you would wear them. None of this inside out, arms half pulled through nonsense.

My family think I'm insane. They would just throw it in as it is and hope for the best.

AIBU?

I am OCD I admit. My logic I think stems from if it goes in the right way, I shouldn't have to spend much time putting them the right way round before coming and putting away?

OP posts:

I just throw them in, no time for faffing and turning thigs around.

However my black Jeans need to be inside out.

cheeseychovolate · 20/09/2021 09:32

I wash clothes inside out to try and stop the colour from fading.

backtolifebacktoreality · 20/09/2021 09:33

Jeans inside out. Socks MUST be in the right way, otherwise bits of fluff etc on the soles stay inside the sock.

Bombaloorina · 20/09/2021 09:34

Yes. I am you, OP.

I ask everyone to put their clothes in their laundry baskets outside out (i.e. not inside out).

It is such a faff having to turn them outside outside out before you can even fold them to put them away.

C0nn1e · 20/09/2021 09:35

I like them the right way round as well @wafflesandbeans. & with empty pockets.

Cazzovuoi · 20/09/2021 09:35

But the entire garment gets wet and subsequently washed.

stitchmaker85 · 20/09/2021 09:36

Just a note: OCD is not something you Are. It is not an adjective, it's a debilitating mental illness.

On a seperate note, I do like to clothes the right way out otherwise I feel like all the dirt on the outside won't wash off properly

Wagglerock · 20/09/2021 09:36

Inside out here. I think it's to stop the colours/patterns running or running off or that might be a load of nonsense and I'm giving myself even more work to do.....

Fattedthesecond · 20/09/2021 09:36

They need to be inside out otherwise colours and patterns will fade. Or if something fluffy ends up in the wash, the fluff will stick to the inside, not the outside.

LittleOwl153 · 20/09/2021 09:36

The right way around or completely inside out (to protect something) fine.

Arms rolled up, socks in balls, full pockets etc get rejected in our house there is a basket near the washer where such things get chucked... the conversation goes something like this...

can't fine my xxx...
have you tried the box by the washer...
no of course it isn't washed look at it it won't wash like that....
that's not fair I need it...

Even the youngest is getting better at it!

PurBal · 20/09/2021 09:36

DH would agree with you. I hope for the best.

firsttimeclock · 20/09/2021 09:37

My mum is with you OP and I do agree with it. But having to stick my hands into a toddler's mud soaked clothes to put it the right way... not my favourite job 😁

Hopdathelf · 20/09/2021 09:43

Right way round, fine. Inside out, fine. Halfway in between not fine as time has to be spent sorting everything out before it goes on the drying rack.

DigitalGhost · 20/09/2021 09:45

Inside out to wash always. Otherwise the colours don't last as long. Especially kids clothes as they're washed more often.
I do put everything the right way to dry though as it drives me nuts if I have to do it when putting them away.

MatildaIThink · 20/09/2021 09:47

You should wash inside out to protect against bobbling etc.

ChurchWCat · 20/09/2021 09:48

@cheeseychovolate

I wash clothes inside out to try and stop the colour from fading.

I do this too, it makes a difference.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 20/09/2021 09:55

I don't understand this idea of washing "inside out to preserve the colour" - in a washing machine, everything gets wet through, both sides of the fabric get equal treatment of water and detergent. I can understand when pegging out on the line that you might want things inside out to preserve colour, as the sun can bleach.

Topseyt · 20/09/2021 09:57

Everything has to be the right way out in this house. I won't wash it if it is inside out. Never had colour and pattern fade.

The washing inside out does not prevent fading from the washing, it stops the bobbling and discolouration that can occur from different fabrics rubbing together, eg. cotton and manmade materials rubbing against each other will abrade much more than cotton against cotton, even different weaves will abrade more than against the same weave.
vodkaredbullgirl · 20/09/2021 10:00

Wash them the way they come off, can be inside out or right side out.

OldTinHat · 20/09/2021 10:00

If, once dry, they are inside out then that is how they stay in our house. Whoever is getting dressed can faff around with their clothes, I'm not.
RunningStrong · 20/09/2021 10:07

Actually, I think most things benefit from being washed (and ironed) inside out.

I do give it back inside out too and also, I often hang things inside out in my own wardrobe too. Especially good for things that don't get worn often and might get a but dusty on the shoulders.

PheasantsNest · 20/09/2021 10:13

No we just bung it all in.

PatchworkWellies · 20/09/2021 10:21

I wash them whichever way they land in the laundry basket, but then I fold them that way round too so the person wearing them has to put them back the right way round before wearing!! Usually socks and t shirts are left inside out, I'm quite happy to pair socks up inside out!
