Washing the right way?

This is a deep argument which is causing conflict in my household.... Wink

When loading clothes into the washing machine, I insist that they should be the right way round aka the way you would wear them. None of this inside out, arms half pulled through nonsense.

My family think I'm insane. They would just throw it in as it is and hope for the best.

AIBU?

I am OCD I admit. My logic I think stems from if it goes in the right way, I shouldn't have to spend much time putting them the right way round before coming and putting away?

Right way out, no balled socks etc. I am the one doing laundry and I do not wish to turn 20 school socks the right way out every week. If they put stuff in inside out then they can turn it right way when it is clean.

I do turn jeans inside out but that is it.

So either they do their own laundry or they have to turn everything the right way out. You don't do it.

banivani · 20/09/2021 10:23

Inside out is best, it protects colour and surface. I don't enforce this with other people's clothes, but I care about my own. It is absolutely the best way if you want trousers to dry quicker, as the pockets can flap a bit and you get air in there while they're hanging. Otherwise there's four layers of wet fabric, that takes longer to dry.

I often iron trousers inside out anyway. Clothes can stay inside out in the wardrobes, it doesn't matter.

Half way is just bloody rude to the person doing the laundry, because when you're hanging it to dry to still have to have it turned completely one way or the other and it's annoying doing this to wet clothes.

The only hill I'd die on is the don't leave clothes half turned in the laundry basket one, because rudeness. If my kids don't want to turn your trousers and they stay damp around the pockets then that's entirely their problem like. ;)

Socks - same way as worn.

Iron???? Grin

Youdoyoutoday · 20/09/2021 10:23

Doesn't washing things inside out help stop bobbling?? But socks need to be the right way to get them properly clean

wafflesandbeans · 20/09/2021 10:27

@vodkaredbullgirl

Iron???? Grin

That's a dirty word in this house!

I don't iron, DH does that thankfully.

Everything the right way around, especially socks as they don't wash properly if you leave them inside out. So much easier to fold up once it's dry.

They should be inside out. It’s kinder to the clothing (results in less wear) and also cleans problem areas like armpits, cuffs and necklines properly. Throwing them right way round is just pointless imp
OhRene · 20/09/2021 10:48

I don't want to faff with other people's dirty washing so everyone is expected to pull the knickers out of their leggings, unroll their sock balls and and put them all right way out. I do however wash my dark jeans inside out because they're supposed to keep their colour longer that way. I'm yet to discover if it's actually true or not.

ShinySquirrel · 20/09/2021 10:51

I throw them in any way, but if anything is particularly smelly, then inside out is better as it gets a deeper clean. Black trousers and jeans also get washed inside out.

Also, please don't describe yourself as 'I am OCD'. It minimises what is a serious and debilitating illness.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 10:51

Trousers with pockets washed and dried inside out. Apparently it ‘traps’ the colour if it runs, and makes sure pockets are dry.
Jumpers, and any tops with embellishments, inside out to reduce bobbling/rubbing.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 10:52

And any socks that are inside out in the wash basket get washed, dried and paired inside out 😉

MrsMiddleMother · 20/09/2021 11:07

It has to be fully the right way round OR fully inside out. I don't care which as long as sleeves aren't bunched up and socks balled up or one leg in one leg out etc.

SoloISland · 20/09/2021 11:08

First world issues.. Think of the hassle I avoid by not having a washing machine..

Rosebel · 20/09/2021 11:14

If it has a motif type picture then I wash it inside out or it fades and flakes quickly. Tbh I'm not too worried about anything else and just wash it as it's put in the basket.

EagleOrIgel · 20/09/2021 12:12

DC T-shirt's inside out, pictures last longer and glitter doesn't spread as much.
Anything with buttons, zips etc inside out so don't catch on other clothes.
Rest, I don't care, wash and fold as it comes.

Ninkanink · 20/09/2021 12:14

Inside out! As otherwise they will wear out much more quickly on the side you see when worn...

SciFiScream · 20/09/2021 12:25

It depends what the item is. Jeans get washed inside out.

All zips should be zipped up

Anything with a picture on (not woven into the fabric) gets washed inside out - as other items in the washing machine could damage the picture.

Socks and tights right way round in a laundry bag (along with ties, face coverings, bras etc)

I am OCD. When I peg the washing out I pull the items out of the machine and lay them on the unit top and then count how many pegs I will need. I have to attach the pegs to my clothes. I peg the clothes out carefully and it takes ages.

I could pull the washing out of the machine and throw it in a basket and take the peg bag out and do it that way, but I can't !

It's me. I like being me. Counting is one of my 'things" I count the seconds between traffic light changes. I think it is a coping mechanism but since I enjoy doing it I don't see the harm and do not feel insane. LOL

Just do what you want.

BridgetInHerBravery · 20/09/2021 12:32

Everything except socks is washed, dried and folded inside out.

Apart from some tops which dry better on a hanger and are dried right way round.

Line drying inside out helps protect against sun fading and helps sterilise gussets.
