All wrapping paper should be recyclable

Just started looking for wrap for Christmas and it’s shocking that there’s so much of that shiny crap paper that can’t be recycled still being sold.

All wrapping paper being produced today should be 100% recyclable.

On that note, which brands are selling nicely design recyclable wrapping paper? Need some tips. Thanks. (Or I guess I’ll be brown papering…)

Didn’t know you couldn’t recycle shiny wrapping paper. Blush

AGreenerShadeofKale · 19/09/2021 12:32

Yes it is so obvious.
It will be introduced as a green law to much fanfare in about 5 years time.

PercyPiginaWig · 19/09/2021 12:33

You can use brown paper and draw on it. I'm crap at drawing but DH did some nice designs on it last time.

We actually said we're not wrapping presents for adults this year or using reusable bags.
Even if recyclable it is still pretty wasteful as a concept. We don't wrap gifts for each other.

Whinge · 19/09/2021 12:34

I agree. Although I supect a lot of people just assume it's all recyclable as it's wrapping paper. So I suspect they put it in the recycling bin and think it's all fine. Sad

burritofan · 19/09/2021 12:35

And so much with glitter on it too!

We do brown paper and string across the extended family, reusing the paper and sending it back. Which makes us sound awful and worthy and like we make cake out of twigs…

daisylashes · 19/09/2021 12:37

This annoys me too, also quite hard to work out what's recyclable or not

EvilRingahBitch · 19/09/2021 12:37

YANBU. Lots of eco ideas have a downside in terms of cost or durability or swings and roundabouts issues for different types of environmental cost. But moving away from glitter and plastics on wrapping paper and cards is a 100% win with no downsides, so no matter how small the environmental benefit it's worth doing.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 19/09/2021 12:38

Well, one goes in a landfill here as non recyclable and one in a landfil in a country we send it to as recyclable...
I would like to see more compostable stuff which doesn't need industrial composting.

Not sure about this year but last year Tesco had a really nice selection of recyclable paper, cleared labelled as such too...

I think you sound very organised and thrifty too.

Absolutely. Nobody "needs" glitter and shine on cards and wrapping paper. I really hope it becomes the norm in the same way that bringing your own bags to the supermarket now is.

DGFB · 19/09/2021 12:44

John Lewis do a brilliant range

BigGreen · 19/09/2021 12:45

Bonkers, YANBU. I got some nice stuff in Poundland last year.

Allthingspeaches · 19/09/2021 12:56

We don't use it anymore. Brown paper and decorate or newspaper.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 19/09/2021 13:02

Brown paper and nice string or stamps here.

Icecreamsoda99 · 19/09/2021 13:05

I second Tesco! They had some beautiful recycable wrapping paper last year!

romany4 · 19/09/2021 13:21

I got lovely recyclable wrapping paper from Etsy last year

AGreenerShadeofKale · 19/09/2021 13:23

The manufacturers need to take responsibility for end of life disposal.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 19/09/2021 13:24

Yanbu. I deliberately bought recyclable wrapping paper last year only to discover that my council won't recycle any wrapping paper as the risk of contamination is too high.

HungryHippo11 · 19/09/2021 13:28

YANBU at all. Why does it even need to be foiled and shiny?!

Aldi do wrapping paper which is recycled and recyclable, and it's not expensive. Last year I got Peppa Pig christmas paper there and grown up one with trees on, for 99p. It says "recyclable" on the inside so even if you gifted it to someone else they would also know to recycle it.

Waitrose also have some but it's more expensive (naturally).

Remember that sellotape is not recyclable either, so you need to use paper tape, string or remove all tape before recycling.

Babipur have gorgeous paper tape and wrapping paper. I know some people who just use brown paper and the babipur tape, as it looks decorated enough with just the tape.

I’ve used second hand scarfs as reusable wrapping but then I don’t have large size presents to wrap or many to do

autumnboys · 19/09/2021 13:50

I bought fabric last year to use with family and friends. They either reuse it back, or some of them just give them back. Look at furoshiki for ways to do it.

Soozikinzi · 19/09/2021 13:51

100 % agree

bonbonours · 19/09/2021 13:53

You don't have to use brown paper for it to be recyclable. Just look for paper with no shiny or glittery bits on. I buy it every year, and for birthdays etc.

I agree that the non recyclable sort shouldn't be allowed.

elQuintoConyo · 19/09/2021 13:57

Fabric swatches and fabric drawstring bags here. I get them back after Xmas, even months later it's ok. I also have different prints/colours for birthdays.

It's so sad to hear "I was up all night 24th wrapping, kids were up at 7am opening presents" - 6 or so hours and it's ripped off, made me stop and think.

I've been 'fabricking' for about 7 years now [smugface] Grin
