Is this song about asphyxiation during sex or am I an old gimmer who's read it wrong? Please help!

Well he's right.

Any person, but especially men because of greater grip strength, should be aware that if they choke their partner then there's a chance they might die or have a TIA or full on stroke.

Just a thumb in the wrong place for a little too long.

Would deffo be a big fat hassle. Not so sexxxxxay.

And sure, a lot of people say they like it, but multiple small brain injuries caused by repeated choking can lead to dementia and/or increased risk of fatal or severely disabling stroke. Again, I dunno, not that sexy. But maybe the thought of sitting out the rest of your life doubly incontinent and unable to communicate does something for you. You do you.

Of course it’s my own decision, how dare you think I’m incapable of making my own mind up about what I like! Angry[/quote]
Easy on Tiger. No point in getting your dander up if you are well cool with it.

@toocold54

I’ve read the lyrics several times and can’t see where it says or implies anything about choking Confused
Read them again and a few more times then. Even worse, the implication is that the woman wants to be choked and it's all her idea alone.
phoenixrosehere · 18/09/2021 23:37

sorry I should have worded that better I was meaning alot of songs have awful lyrics even songs from many years ago but his song is no more shocking than any song that's been out now.

No worries and you are right. There are many songs from previous decades that not only degrade women but reference rape, domestic violence, and stalking yet this is somehow shocking.

Example:

The Beatles - Run for your life -1965

Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Well, you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
___

The beat doesn’t give off that kind of vibe though.

@mynameiscalypso

Being incredibly out of touch with popular music, I initially thought that this thread was about the Berlin song from Top Gun and I was a bit surprised.
Ha ha ditto!
ImNotDancing · 18/09/2021 23:46

There’s a way to not like it on the radio without kink shaming tho Confused

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 19/09/2021 00:00

I was expecting this to be about a particularly rubbish cover of the Berlin song from Top Gun.

gah2teenagers · 19/09/2021 00:04

@LeopardPrintTits

Some of us like being choked Confused
Hope there’s nobody to miss you then Hmm
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/09/2021 00:23

Had to change my vote as I was thinking of an entirely different song to start with!

Now I’ve read the lyrics definitely yanbu

MildCreamyCheddar · 19/09/2021 00:28

Very much reads to me that the woman in the song is asking for choking or another similar kink, and that he doesn't want to do it.

I've not googled to see if he's written anything about the motivation behind the song but I would say the lyrics suggest the song is actually about everything being wrong with choking.

A sad topic full stop, never mind in a song, but to me it's highlighting the issue. Some men are choking women to death, and some men are accidentally choking to death a willing participant.

We cannot and will not know the truth behind every single case where a woman dies this way. I'd hope this song would encourage women not to ask for this, or to be aware of what it could mean if they let it happen (I'm aware some women can't fight back hard enough if it wasn't wanted, though).

StMarysKettle · 19/09/2021 05:54

I had no idea that Weekend was a pop singer. Also that if a woman likes to be choked its only because of evil men - nothing to do with women being free to like what they like and do what they want.

I'm also not sure that Weekend has a "very young" demographic of fans, most people I know that like his music are in their late 20s to early 30s. He's not exactly the Wiggles.

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2021 10:51

They just played this song on Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs. Confused

@notacooldad

Im more concerned that my teen daughter is listening to all sorts of songs about mental health issues & suicide , there's loads about It's not only songs about suicide ithers concerning butvall thevwebsites they share with each other! It really isxalarming. About 4 years ago the "trend" amongst many young girls was self harm. For many it was very real and a ( terrible) way to cope with trauma. Others it was almost like a fad to be part of a select group. They swooped tips with each other.
Yep, there are loads of songs out there now singing about mental health issues, severe issues, harming, suicide, my teen dd seems to have got hooked on them all. A few weeks back she said she had some disorder where you feel disconnected from yourself, I was panicking and then found she had been listening to a song about this , she has moved on to other songs (still MH ones)and now hasn't mentioned this disorder................loads on Tik tok too
GreySweater · 19/09/2021 15:47

Perhaps. Although the Blinding Lights dance challenge on tik tok during 2020 was watched and recreated by pretty much every 11 year old I know.

FibroWife · 22/12/2021 21:23

I love this song and personally I also love the feeling I get when my DH has his hands around my neck and squeezes when we're having sex - but I was a little surprised/shocked to hear it on mainstream radio - I wouldn't have thought it appropriate for that. Activities like this need careful planning and complete trust in the partner - not the kind of thing you take lightly - and I do have concerns about young girls listening to this, understanding the meaning behind it and deciding to try it themselves without first talking it through with their partners and understanding the risks. That's a tragic accident waiting to happen :(

Weegiewtf · 22/12/2021 21:32

Talking of not knowing songs have darker meanings, I always have to laugh when someone plays Extreme’s more than words for their first dance. It’s a song about coercing someone into performing a sex act to prove they love you.
