Is this song about asphyxiation during sex or am I an old gimmer who's read it wrong? Please help!

Cross post @FrankButchersDickieBow!

I bought his first album and thought god what a load of depressing drivel. I only liked the one song that made me buy it and that was it..and I can't even remember what that is now Grin

mynameiscalypso · 18/09/2021 20:42

Being incredibly out of touch with popular music, I initially thought that this thread was about the Berlin song from Top Gun and I was a bit surprised.

Freshstart2014 · 18/09/2021 20:43

I thought it was about cocaine ... Confused

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/09/2021 20:44

Wow those lyrics are disturbing. Basically l would choke you but you might die and l would get into trouble so it's not worth the risk. Not l might hurt you....!

I am surprised at the number of young women that are into this and can only assume it's because they think it's cool / makes them look cool. It's so bizarre.

Not unlike the number of kids deciding they are non-binary or trans. It's like when we were all wearing bottle tops on our shoes, only now you have to be more extreme to be seen as edgy and different. Bring back the goths and grunge l say. Bit safer.

slightlyworriedthissunday · 18/09/2021 20:46

How the fuck is this allowed? Confused

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:10

Is it that different to Ariana Grande to 34+35, positions, Rihanna s&m etc

I don't know 34+35, does that refer to an act that potentially kills someone during sex but deciding not to risk it because you don't need the hassle?
Booknooks · 18/09/2021 21:17

But but but there's some catchy beats so it's fine?!

Yanbu, it's gross, and I don't think it compares to the songs by female artists that have been brought up on this thread.

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:24

well it's about sex & I would say Arianas fan base are younger than then the Weeknds.

I'm not saying some of the lyrics aren't questionable.

Feelinglow27 · 18/09/2021 21:26

I hate that choking women is now a thing and so mainstream we have pop songs about it. I am dreading the day when my daughter realises just what some men love to do to women. So depressing.

notacooldad · 18/09/2021 21:26

Hint, Do the math!

phoenixrosehere · 18/09/2021 21:26

I think that the lyrics are about erotic asphyxiation which I know sounds shocking in a main stream song and I agree but to be honest alot of songs now the lyrics are absolutely awful

A lot of songs now have awful lyrics? Really? There are many mainstream songs that had dubious lyrics in earlier generations yet now is so much more worse. It really isn’t, people just seem to have short memories.

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:33

I wish the lyrics were different but it's a good song. That's the problem.

Hint, Do the math! 😆

The lines

Can you stay up all night?
Fuck me 'til the daylight

are less then subtle!

Booknooks · 18/09/2021 21:53

But the issue isn't about being about sex, but talking about a specific element that has slowly crept into the mainstream. Sure, some people genuinely might enjoy it, but it's another layer of normalising and raising pressure on what is a niche, and more importantly, potentially dangerous act.

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 21:56

Perhaps the radio shouldn't play it.

GreySweater · 18/09/2021 22:24

These lyrics feel really wrong to have in a mainstream song that's played on radio stations that pre teens and teens listen to. And it feels totally unnecessary - the lyrics could easily be amended to not be so dark.
The fact that clearly the radio stations are openly playing this / supporting this content is bad taste. And I don't understand how The Weeknd could have agreed to use these lyrics. He knows who his fans are (& my guess is that they are a very young demographic) and is shows real disdain for them by singing this utter shit.

Tittyfilarious81 · 18/09/2021 22:26

@phoenixrosehere sorry I should have worded that better I was meaning alot of songs have awful lyrics even songs from many years ago but his song is no more shocking than any song that's been out now

Mandalordeloris · 18/09/2021 22:30

The Weeknd has been singing about sex and violence for a long time.

Did everyone miss the video where he gets decapitated? Or the one where he shoots himself? Or the song he sang about oral sex that was played on mainstream radio?

You're all a bit late to this party TBH.

Creamsoda77 · 18/09/2021 22:38

Is it? who cares, some people like this, my friend did this for years with her boyfriend, consenting adults?

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 22:38

Fil popped round & was fiddling with the ipad. Often the explicit version blasted out 😆😆

notacooldad · 18/09/2021 22:42

Yeah me!🙋‍♀️
I missed all that as his music is tva genre I tend to listen to. I only know Blinding lights from TicTok.
I only but the mainstream radio on when I've got the kids I work with in the car with me.

Creamsoda77 · 18/09/2021 22:42

Im more concerned that my teen daughter is listening to all sorts of songs about mental health issues & suicide , there's loads about.,,,,

It's not only songs about suicide ithers concerning butvall thevwebsites they share with each other!
It really isxalarming.
About 4 years ago the "trend" amongst many young girls was self harm. For many it was very real and a ( terrible) way to cope with trauma. Others it was almost like a fad to be part of a select group. They swooped tips with each other.

toocold54 · 18/09/2021 23:20

I’ve read the lyrics several times and can’t see where it says or implies anything about choking Confused
