Duvets!

Gorgeous weather today, so spring (autumn) cleaned our bedroom, new feather duvet & pillows ready for the colder weather.
My old feather quilt looked absolutely disgusting in colour in comparison to the new one! 😳
Be honest, how often do you buy a new duvet?

Dry Clean once a year (when swapping from winter to summer!) then replace maybe every 3 or so when it's looking like it needs it? Although on year 3 of the current one (white company) and it's going strong!

CiaoForNiao · 16/09/2021 16:31

I bought my feather duvet when ex left. So November 2009. Its my only duvet. Goes in the machine 2 or 3 times a year. It's fine.

DappledThings · 16/09/2021 16:31

About 20 years or so. It goes inside a cover that gets regularly washed. I care very little beyond that!

EatYourVegetables · 16/09/2021 16:33

“Refuse, reuse, recycle”. In that order. So buying a new duvet every 3 years because the old one is a bit faded is not really on Confused

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 16/09/2021 16:34

How do people fit their 2x2m+ duvets in their washing machine? I would love to be able to but my regular sized washing machine definitely can't take that.

FOJN · 16/09/2021 16:35

When required. Current duvet is 5 years old and washed regularly, doesn't look like it will need replacing anytime soon.

Vickstory79 · 16/09/2021 16:36

I always buy single duvets, so two singles on larger beds.
It means that they are washed regularly.

What do you do when the filling bunches up though? We can't have down in this house as we are allergic.

I don't know how other people do it but mine is a four seasons one so I wash the two duvets separately without any problem. The mattress protector on the other hand is so bulky it has to go to a launderette.

SoloISland · 16/09/2021 16:39

Like others mine lasts and lasts. But after the disaster this week I think I am happier with blankets. Duvets came late in my life.

I was given a costly feather one way back that is just too huge for my single bed that is against the wall. So it is doubled and under the bottom sheet and is sheer bliss. Cushions and soothes.

FOJN · 16/09/2021 16:45

Just remembered the other thing I do to increase the life of duvets is to rotate it with the one in the spare room to get even wear out of both. I bought two exactly the same for the purpose of rotating them.

onelittlefrog · 16/09/2021 16:47

There's no reason a duvet can't last a decade or more if looked after and cleaned properly.

I'm surprised people are replacing duvets every 2-3 years because they "look like they need it". At that point they likely just need a clean.

Please don't throw duvets into landfill if you don't need to.

Some duvets can go in the washing machine. Those which can't, you can get professionally cleaned. Generally cheaper than a new duvet but perhaps slightly more effort, which I guess is why most people don't do it.

Please just consider the environmental cost of chucking your old duvet into landfill and the creation of your new one. Is it really necessary?

Ninkanink · 16/09/2021 16:50

We’ve replaced ours once in 10+ years.

We wash each duvet (summer/winter) once a year before we pack it away for the opposite season.

BumfuzzledMum · 16/09/2021 16:50

I will admit that I bin all our duvets in the late spring when I take them off for the summer. I’ve learned that washing them makes them go to shit (same with pillows). Buy new cheapish ones every Autumn.

We rarely fly, recycle everything (duvets are taken to the recycling centre) and drive zero emission cars so that kind of offsets it!

WaltzingToWalsingham · 16/09/2021 16:54

My duvet was a wedding present, so nearly 20 years old. It's an "all seasons" duvet, it two separate ones (4.5 tog and 9 tog) that can be used together if necessary. They are feather and down, and wash beautifully in my washing machine. I wash them once a year, first thing in the morning on a day that is forecast to be hot and sunny, and they dry on the line (with occasional shaking to separate clumps of feathers).

LaurieFairyCake · 16/09/2021 16:54

I've had my down duvet for 26 years

I wash and tumble dry it twice a year

Ninkanink · 16/09/2021 16:58

Mind you we both shower a lot, change our bedding once a week and routinely hang our duvets and pillows out to air, plus our bedroom window is always open and we air out our bed daily as well. So the duvet really doesn’t get manky to begin with. One wash a year after six month’s use is just fine. Always comes up like brand spanking new.👍

Soubriquet · 16/09/2021 17:00

Urm…you don’t want to know Blush

INeed2P · 16/09/2021 17:02

Whew, people don't like the new duvet comment I made 😬

Prior to my current one (way more expensive in the hopes it would last much longer!) I was in my early 20s and bought cheaper fibre duvets, after three or so years they looked like they needed replacing as they'd gone really empty feeling and bunched where there was filling! I thought I read somewhere it recommended to replace duvets every 5 years, because they get filled with dead skin cells / dust etc?

Anyway that's why I spent a wild about on a proper down one that will (hopefully!) last much longer when it's taken care of and dry cleaned so shouldn't have the same issues Smile as I said, currently 3 years and going strong, so well worth the money!

Fraine · 16/09/2021 17:04

I’ve had my current duvet since 2014. It’s still a pristine white. It gets a yearly washy in the launderette and aired on washing line on sunny days when bedding is being washed and dried.

Other duvets also all pristine.

purplesequins · 16/09/2021 17:06

I wash our duvets once a year after hay fever season.
we all have single duvets, they fit in the washer without issue.

PeonyTime · 16/09/2021 17:10

Every 10 years or so?

DappledThings · 16/09/2021 18:04

Speechless.

It really doesn’t.

Our duvet was £40 from Debenhams and is going strong after 8 years and pristine after a wash in the launderette each year.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/09/2021 18:11

We've been married 36 years and have had 2 sets. Current ones are 5 years old. The old ones only went because the cover split.

I anticipate that they will last longer than we do.

Washed and tumble dried once a year.
