Dog barked at my child

We were at the park and two year old was having a moment so sat down on the pavement. Dog came over and barked at him. Dog went away. It felt ok and I was looking out.

We started to do a lap of the oval and big again started to stare and bark from us at a distance and wasn’t looking at the other dog he was playing with, or his owner. Dog was getting closer (but also stopped). I grabbed kid and went.

Was the kid in danger?

@BentBastard

Dogs have a range of types of bark that mean different things. Dog owners usually come to understand what the different barks usually mean. No one here can tell you what this dogs bark likely meant as we didn't hear it.

The owner may have been neglectful or it might be that h/she is used to the dog telling her when there's something going on nearby and didn't pay it much mind.

Some dogs are more Barney than others abs some regularly bark at any other dog or human in their vicinity because they just do.

Doesn't sound like there was any danger but if you're inexperienced around dogs then moving away was probably the right course of action for you're own anxiety relief.

Thank you. Yes I’m inexperienced with both children and dogs. I actually can’t remember the last time I saw a dog or it barked at me….. I just felt so vulnerable as the child is small. I think I would have been inappropriate had I told the owner of.

To be posting on MN about such a non event is very odd.

Why would she do that is she wasn’t upset of if she did not need validation for her behaviour? Addressing her anxiety will help.

Blindstupid · 16/09/2021 12:35

So 9 pages in and we get a better picture - you’re not a parent, it wasn’t your child. You looked after someone else’s child, didn’t tell the parent/s and you’re worried you’ll get found out or the child will be traumatised by the non incident and you feel terrible?

OneTC · 16/09/2021 12:35

I think even more understandable if it's someone else's kid!

Imaging going and giving their kid back with 1 arm and you're like "you're never gonna believe what happened down the park"

When a kids yours you can take the decision on whether it's getting eaten or not Grin

Againstmachine · 16/09/2021 12:35

Why did you sit in the path it sounds a bit bizarre

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/09/2021 12:36

I’m neither a dog or child owner.

Why do you write ‘my child’ in your post then?

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/09/2021 12:37

So this child is not your own child?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 16/09/2021 12:37

Are you mad? 90% of MN is about non events!

No they didn't

OrangutanLibrarian · 16/09/2021 12:39

If your instinct tells you to move your child away from a dog, just do it. If only there were some dog-free parks.
This does just sound like he was barking in a non-aggressive way though.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/09/2021 12:40

Yes they did.

Dog barked at my child

Yes, they did. It’s in the thread title

You could e.g. say "Could you put your dog on a lead, please?"

Even if someone really is "just" overly anxious, for no logical reason, as a dog owner I'd put the dog on a lead because I know that even though I am OK with dogs, not everyone is.
I remember before I got a dog, I was walking in the forest when two large dogs approached me. In retrospect, they must have thought they knew me, as the first one ran up and placed its front paws on my shoulders! I had no idea whether they were about to attack me or what, so just stood there stiff as a board. The owner took them away without apology but my knees were knocking. When you're not familiar with dogs, you don't know what to think. (Today I'd know how to stop them being so familiar!)

Not at all.

We go to that park all the time and there are always dogs there.

What would I tell the parent…. Oh I was in the park and baby was crying all morning for you. We got to the park and he stopped crying but only wanted to push the buggy around, so that’s all we did.

By the way a dog barked at him. Also I lifted up child because I felt a little threatened by a dog.

I’m not a dog or child owner but yeah I completely should be telling you this.

What’s a child owner when it’s home?

42SrauvP · 16/09/2021 12:45

You were absolutely right to be worried. Dogs can inflict great harm and strange dogs are by definition unpredictable. Always trust your instincts.
(I’m a dog owner)

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/09/2021 12:46

Child owner😂

Blindstupid · 16/09/2021 12:48

OP you’re sounding more strange the more you post. Either this is a problem to you or it’s not. You’re now sounding very cagey and cryptic 🤷🏼‍♀️

So they did, apologies Smile

sashh · 16/09/2021 12:49

Ridiculous comment - dogs do kill people. A hedgehog is no threat to anyone

I stroked one once, it went 'huff huff huff' but luckily it didn't stare at me, it was too distracted eating it's food.

TwooThirty · 16/09/2021 12:49

I’m neither a dog or child owner.
Not the point but ‘child owner’ sounds incredibly dark.

I’m assuming the child knows you though and you’re a friend/aunt/nanny/etc and you didn’t just pick up a random child?

tickledtiger · 16/09/2021 12:50

There are probably YouTube videos on dog body language and how dogs communicate if you wanted to find out more about it op. It might make you more comfortable in the future if you have another situation with a dog. (I don’t mean this sarcastically sorry if I offend you)

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/09/2021 12:50

There's a hedgehog i feed at night, it hissed at me as I kept taking pictures of it.

TwooThirty · 16/09/2021 12:51

Also ‘I’m not a dog’ is making me laugh far more than is should.
