I do. Wine usually, a couple of glasses. It's how I unwind. I do skip some nights. I know it's not great for you but everyone has their vices. It helps me cope and feel happier and more able to 'do' life.

Too much wine and i wake up with a racing heart about 4am. Another reason I've reigned it in.

LimitIsUp · 17/09/2021 15:57

@MarchingOnTogether

My mum used to drink a glass or two a night when we were kids. And my dad went to the pub after work most nights for a couple of pints. They died at 57 (mum) and 62 (dad). Both suffered kidney and liver failure.
I am sorry that they were taken from you early Thanks

Nope

I think the weird thing about alcohol is that it's particularly hard to do in moderation.

Unlike more 21st-century drugs, which don't make you feel invincible / reckless / devil-may-care, alcohol has a built-in valve suppressant. That valve that tells you you've had enough and it's time to stop.

And you tend to need a certain amount to get the desired effect (and you just want to carry on drinking when you get it).

I used to but not anymore, I rarely drink now probably because I can never determine whether I'll wake up with a headache or not.

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2021 21:56

For me it’s just to enjoy drinking a glass of wine/g and t/bottle of beer. That doesn’t require drinking a lot to get any effect. Not everyone is drinking to get drunk.

What is with this 'nope' trend in replying to the OP?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 17/09/2021 22:22

I don't because I'm struggling with my weight and don't want the extra calories Sad.

Girlintheframe · 17/09/2021 22:24

I barely drink anymore.
I feel I sleep better when sober. It also gave me anxiety.

AlexaShutUp · 17/09/2021 22:25

I don't. I went for months without drinking at all last year, but now I typically have a drink about once a week. Usually only one.

I don't really need it to unwind and I'm not that bothered as to whether I have it or not.

Sarahlou63 · 17/09/2021 22:27

I have a hefty V&C every evening (preceded by a large glass of water) which I nurse for 90 minutes and then one or two glasses of red with dinner. Never drunk, never feel the need to drink more and I'm up at 6.30 every day.

Burritobowl84 · 17/09/2021 22:41

I don’t drink every night, I tend to save it for a Friday or Saturday night.

If I could stop at one or two glasses I probably would, but once I’ve had one I have to have at least 3 more.

I’m ashamed to say I never grew out of the whole drinking to get drunk phase as opposed to drinking to unwind, enjoy the flavour tbh. I have to be at least tipsy before I’m satisfied and ready to go to bed. So yeah, I might not drink on the reg, but I do suspect I might have a slight problem/habit of’ binge drinking’. If I’m only gonna have glass or two I don’t see the point. I’m all or nothing, either a cup of tea, or an entire bottle of wine.

Boopeedoop · 17/09/2021 22:46

I'm teetotal. I don't really get the whole drinking to relax thing.

I did used to drink, I just don't see the appeal.

SunSeaSurfGin · 17/09/2021 22:49

A bottle of wine lasts a working week. So like one glass a night maybe 2 if it's been a long day. I think I have about 14 units a week. HCP looked at me as though I had two heads when I told her that the other day Confused

I've noticed it quite often. It means "no" but with slightly dismissive, morally-superior, pious overtones. No one ever replies "nope" to questions about whether you've ever been on a helicopter, or whether you like anchovies!
user1471604848 · 17/09/2021 23:01

Yes, I have a glass of wine every night. It's my treat to unwind after working a stressful, senior, full time job, while being a single mum to twin toddlers.

I'm not worried about developing a dependency on wine. I gave up wine easily, multiple times while doing IVF, and obviously while pregnant.

It's only ever one glass, while in bed with my book. It's not "the thin edge of the wedge" which will grow to 2 or 3 glasses and then a bottle.

VestaTilley · 17/09/2021 23:11

No, it’s really not a good idea.

notanothertakeaway · 18/09/2021 08:30

If you are looking for AF wines, I have tried a number of them, and my favourites are Noughty by Thomson & Scott, and Freixenet 0% rose

YouTubeAddict · 18/09/2021 08:52

No. It sounds like you’re drinking too much, I don’t mean to sound preachy. I can literally go weeks without a drink. I last had half a can of a pre mixed gin and tonic last weekend and before that it was a cider maybe two weeks before that.

LevantHera · 18/09/2021 09:01

I've wanted to cut down for a long time, but never seem to be able to keep up my resolve. I also just can't stop once I start. It wasn't so noticeable in the UK, but now I live abroad and everything is cheap Freeflow, I've had many nights ending with an alcoholic blackout. Even if I set a drink limit before I go out, as soon as I start drinking I just want more, and I drink faster and faster.

At home I'd have several drinks, several nights a week.

So I've decided to stop altogether. Last night was myself first big 'test' - a work party with our clients. Freeflow alcohol and lots of people enclosed in a small space. I drank water all night. Feel great today! I hope I can maintain this.

userxx · 18/09/2021 09:07

@LevantHera Well done 👍. It's bloody hard but once you've changed your mindset you've cracked it.

user89000005 · 18/09/2021 09:22

No I feel guilty drinking on a work night, feels over indulgent. Do drink every weekend though, DH the same. We both have alcoholic parents so feelings impacted by that. But alcohol isn't my vice, I do have other vices Wink

Maray1967 · 18/09/2021 09:58

I chill a bottle on Friday and have a large glass on Friday and the same on Saturday and DH and I share the rest on Sunday lunch and that’s it - nothing Monday to Thursday.

Ooh, is the Noughty a red or a white? Found a few good AF sparkling wines, but have yet to find a good red.

Agree about Freixnet rose!
