In response to this lovely thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4336303-Perfumes-of-your-life?pg=4 AIBU to suggest we get some lists of perfume that send you into a head-achy verge of vomiting rage? I’ll start with one I had to sit next to for a 5 hour stretch recently - Youth Dew 🤢. Also disliked by my mother, I’m still getting flash backs now.

Also I’ll add Lulu 🤮. Someone used to wear loads of it at work. I could barely keep my breakfast down when I walked in first thing.

I don't think there has ever been a scent as revolting as Chloe Narcisse.

mrcow · 15/09/2021 18:09

I’ve been playing bingo with this thread and my perfume collection. I think I have a full house (and I own a LOT of perfume!). Wearing Angel today - sorry if you think I stink. I like sweeter fragrances.

Worst perfume - Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds. Actually smells like sick.

Rotting hippy.😂🤣

CounsellorTroi · 15/09/2021 18:13

@SparklingLime

that one in the weird pyramid turquoise bottle with a burgundy trim was called but lots of my mates wore it and it was rank.

Lou Lou, @Threewheeler1.

Always thought Lou Lou smelled like burnt electric cable.

I worked in the perfume department of an Oxford Street department store in the early 1970s (yes I am old) and was always horrified by Je Reviens. It was quite a big seller and that baffled me, because it didn't even smell like a perfume to me, just a really vomit-inducing smell.
It was beyond me how anyone could tolerate it at all, let alone spend a lot of money on it and spray it on themselves. Femme by Rochas, Tweed by Lenthéric and Giorgio Beverley Hills were others I detested. Truly repellent stenches. Not forgetting Youth Dew of course. So overly sweet and overpowering.

coffeeschmoffee · 15/09/2021 18:40

Chanel Chance 🤢🤢🤢🤢
Was given a huge bottle for a landmark birthday. Ended up giving it a friend and making her promise never to wear it when we met up!

SugarHorse · 15/09/2021 18:50

Sisley Eau du Soir and Clinique Aromatics Elixir. Both 🤢🤢

IamEarthymama · 15/09/2021 18:53

DeadButDelicious

Oh me too!
I am Skulking about in my patchouli, feeling very guilty!

I adored Poison, I had so much fun whilst wearing it!

scarpa · 15/09/2021 19:06

Delighted to have made it 9 pages in and mine hasn't been mentioned...! Hahaha.

I can't stand anything very oud-y. Haaaate it. Especially Kilian's oud perfume, which my sister loves and I can't stand (sorry if you read this, Al).

MintyGreenDream · 15/09/2021 19:09

Baccarat Rouge 540.Had abating headache straight away.

MintyGreenDream · 15/09/2021 19:09

banging

Sofiegiraffe · 15/09/2021 19:22

Armani Mania. I wore it when I was pregnant with my first baby and had morning sickness. 15 years later I still can't bear to think of that smell (even the sight of the bottle makes me feel Envy)

woodhill · 15/09/2021 19:23

Giorgio by Beverly Hills

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 15/09/2021 19:25

Clinical 'Happy'.
Migraine in a bottle for me!!!
Oh and Anais Anais is another one that is technicolour -yawn inducing!

Stircraazy · 15/09/2021 19:31

I think the strong 70s/80s perfumes were often worn to mask the eau d' fagsmoke - so you ended with a mingling if the two .
I remember Rochas Femme being quite nice but after several hours in its vicinity it became a cloying sweetness.

I still love the smell of Brut aftershave. It gave the weedy lads of my teens a hint of sophistication - before that there's only been Old Spice - eau d'paintstripper!!

bluetoothroboticgrapefruit · 15/09/2021 19:43

I can't cope with any perfume anymore and I used to love it. Even "old" perfume smell on clothes gets to me. It's frustrating as I used to love perfume.

ChinstrapBobblehat · 15/09/2021 19:53

@Alleycat1

AutistGoth no, Mitsouko by Guerlain. I have never heard of Florida Water, who is it by, please?
Ooh, love Mitsouko. Classy old school fragrance.

Mine’s not been mentioned either, thank goodness …

To the PP who asked how perfume should be applied, the answer is sparingly (or, in the case of some of these, not at all Grin).

I’ve always stuck to advice I read years ago: tiny dab behind ears or on pulse points, or if it’s a spray then spray the air and walk through it so it mists your hair and clothes, never douse your clothes directly. If you can smell it strongly on yourself, then you’re wearing too much.

That was the one that first sprang into my mind.

Years ago, I worked with a woman who drenched herself in it. It practically gave me a migraine.

LakieLady · 15/09/2021 20:11

@ChinstrapBobblehat, Mitsouko's one of my favourites, too. I love it and always have a bottle on the go.

Flower Bomb is one that makes me feel sick. It smells like cheap sweets.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 15/09/2021 20:13

Well, this is embarrassing, but I don’t know what it is. While we were away, dd had her friend stay over and she kipped on the sofa. The sofa stunk of this nasty throat clenching irritating perfume. I cleaned the sofa, over and over, 4 weeks later it’s just about gone.

Oh no, there it is again!

LittleGwyneth · 15/09/2021 20:35

Chanel number 5 - which is a shame because I'm the kind of pretentious person who would LOVE to wear it all the time. And there's an Elizabeth Arden one which smells like Chanel N5 but even worse. Awwwful.

LittleGwyneth · 15/09/2021 20:36

Also this is a fascinating thread - it's amazing how some of my favourite perfumes make other people feel sick.

1FootInTheRave · 15/09/2021 20:38

Olympia
La vie est belle
Chanel allure

CorianderAndCream · 15/09/2021 20:39

No!! Youth Dew was what my mum wore when I was very little! I LOVE that smell

nannannanana · 15/09/2021 20:50
