Sending child to school in marked t-shirts

Blinkingheckythump · 10/09/2021 20:49

So little ones been at school for 5 day's and already has 3 t-shirts with board pen on that I cannot get out. Wibu to send them in with the t-shirts on? It feels so wasteful to bin them and buy new ones after one blinking wear

If they are white try a squirt of bleach based mould & mildew remover, works a treat on DD's white polo shirts.

If they aren't white sod if Grin

It's crazy that you even need to ask, of course you carry on using them.

No doubt posters will come on horrified at the thought of a child wearing something with a mark on it soon enough though.

AliMonkey · 10/09/2021 21:24

Don't bin them. But also worth trying the stain devil for pens as usually works. Or Vanish Gold.

Peanutsandchilli · 10/09/2021 21:26

Absolutely don't bin them. My kids went to primary with pen marks on their tops frequently. Wasn't so bad because they wore blue shirts, but my youngest has just started at a new school with white shirts and I'm forever telling her to be careful not to make them dirty. I'd still send her in them though. Who thought white was a good idea and why do no schools (that I know of) have navy or black ones?!

RoseMartha · 10/09/2021 21:27

I sent my dc onto primary with marker pen on their shirts and dresses and skirts and jumpers. You cant keep buying more it will happen a lot especially in reception and year 1.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 10/09/2021 21:28

I work in a school and a few of my tops have whiteboard pen marks on them. And pink, and green ,and blue ... but at least those come off in the wash easily.

Rocketpants50 · 10/09/2021 21:29

A marked shirt is a sign of learning and having fun. I would be more worried about a clean shirt!

duckme · 10/09/2021 21:29

White polo shirts are the invention of the devil. They look grubby the instant they are put on. I hate them!
We're week one down and 3/5 shirts are pen marked. I'll bleach them in a couple of weeks snd hope for the best. Luckily, the child is growing about a foot a month so he'll have outgrown them soon anyway Hmm

FindingMeno · 10/09/2021 21:31

So long as they're clean, marks don't matter.
You will be on a constant cycle of buying and throwing away otherwise.

As a teacher I have a dress that has a lovely faded repeating pattern on the front after I lent over a child's work thinking it was dry. The dress itself is patterned but you can still see the marks if you're standing close to me. I still wear it to work, it's been washed and is clean and given I work with 4 year olds I'd be very wasteful to bin it.

Send them in the shirts we honestly don't care.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/09/2021 21:32

Only uniform I binned due to stains was the massive mud patch covering the bum area of a gingham dress. Nothing would shift it... and a brown stain in that area really wasn't wearable.

Blinkingheckythump · 10/09/2021 21:33

Thanks for the reassurance. I didn't want to be wasteful but I also didn't want people to judge and think my little ones not looked after well enough if their uniform is marked. I think I just needed the reassurance that the school won't think I'm neglecting him . Daft I know.
I currently have them soaking in vanish (I've already used it in the wash). I should have bought the coloured polo shirts instead of white. Least I'll know for next year I guess

I remember my kids going through this stage and they just wore them for the rest of the year.
I did have to replace the first lot I bought my DD1 though. I used bleach on her white tops and after I washed them they turned pink!
Still no idea why, but I didn't bother again, just washed them with Vanish.

youngandbroken · 10/09/2021 21:59

After a week of hot weather my child's brand new uniform is all stained yellow with sun cream already Sad I defintatly can't afford to replace it for a while so she's wearing it!..... Last year she cut a hole in 3! Of her tops. Now they really were unwearable Grin

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 10/09/2021 22:00

Are they white? Have you tried bleaching them?

CorianderAndCream · 11/09/2021 00:32

Try hairspray :)

nimbuscloud · 11/09/2021 00:35

The planet is completely fucked really
Why would you even consider throwing out clothes after one wear? Have you any idea about how clothes are made? What the costs are?

EIIa · 11/09/2021 00:46

Spray flash bleach on them and leave them on the sun

Hankunamatata · 11/09/2021 00:56

Alcohol gets out dry wipe markers

For mud it's worth doing a cold rinse before washing, especially if it hasn't yet dried.

safclass · 11/09/2021 02:11

This is exactly what i did. In 20+ yrs as teacher and parent ive never found anything that will remove whiteboard pen!

Threearm · 11/09/2021 08:10

Pen marks are different to food stains. Don't bin with pen marks

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/09/2021 08:19

Of course you do!

DS did this in the first week of reception and so he continued wearing those tops until he grew out.

FuzzyPenguin · 11/09/2021 08:23

Ahhh yes, white board marker pen, the only stain I can’t seem to remove from the uniform! I still send him in the marks on or it would be wear once and Chuck.
