To think that Vera is the worst crime drama of our age?

I love a cosy ITV procedural, and happily go along with the expositional dialogue and hoary old stereotyped characters but fuck my old boots this is unwatchable stuff.

Tinkly 'suspense' music, mugging to camera, and her grating voice drove me over to Grand Designs by the second ad break. I believe it's on season 11, so clearly it's a much loved show in some quarters.

YABU - how dare you, I love watching detectives two decades past retirement age turn up and call a corpse 'pet'

YANBU - it used to be finely nuanced, edgy stuff but I feel it's lost it's way somewhat

Father Brown and Murder She Wrote are very much daytime detective series. If you’re under the weather and flumped out on the sofa and need something undemanding.

@eddiemairswife

Scott and Bailey has disappeared, because one of them is on a submarine.

I loave all the police detective dramas. Some are better than others - Line of Duty, The Bridge etc. I also like Maigret, Inspector Montalbano, Hinterland, WPC56, Grantchester, Shetland, Lewis, The Brokenwood Mysteries, The Alienist, Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, Marple etc plus all the ones already mentioned on this thread.

I guess I am just easy to please Grin

The Alienist is fabulous, I enjoyed the first season more than the second, it was so deliciously dark. I'm not really one for cosy dramas.

We watched last week's Vera last night and all I could think was "AVE you been stabbed pet"
So thank you to the pp who posted that Vera has now been ruined forever😂

Great Canadian drama called “CORONER”.

Will fill in until Vera returns

NapoleonOzmolysis · 13/09/2021 13:50

Canadian Coroner is another one where the coroner is doing the job of the pathologist, forensic scientists and policeman. Although she does let the policeman help out sometimes Grin

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

Another fab cosy murder series is ‘The Coroner’ it’s set in Devon, the scenery is breathtaking and the houses were dreamy! I was gutted the BBC only made two series (they have just re run series one) I never did get to find out if Davey and Jane got back together, bring it back BBC please!
I felt really sorry for Davey's wife!
Mrsjayy · 13/09/2021 14:21

I like the Canadian coroner but it veered off into weird last series but it sorted it's self out in the latest series. I like the Alibi channel some good programmes.

@Toddlerteaplease

I had great hopes for Father Brown when that came out. It's bloody awful. The characters are really annoying. And they've clearly done no research into the Catholic Church in the 1950s. He plays it as if he's a C of E vicar, rather than an RC priest. The whole village would not have been Catholic and he wouldn't have had a very old church building. (Yes I'm a pedant)
Haha, I love Father Brown but it always irks slightly that no cosy English village has many, if any, catholics. I don't really care about authenticity though. The format allows all the quirks of CofE to blend in seamlessly with the Irish whimsy and Catholic rituals. Grin

Have downloaded some Betty Wainthrop thanks to this thread. The only series mentioned that I haven't seen or tried.
Canadian coroner too gritty for me. I don't like to see blood or violence in my murder tv. Grin

SmellyOldOwls · 15/09/2021 15:40

Just started watching Endeavour on itv hub thanks to this thread and also because I've taken a shine to the actor thanks to his part in Vigil - although I think that might just be the Navy uniform because Endeavour isn't pushing my buttons the same way. Anyway that's by the by - really enjoying it, but it'll take me forever to catch up, the episodes are so long!

MeredithGreyishblue · 15/09/2021 20:17

I've been saying "have you been stabbed pet?" In a wobbly vaguely NE voice for days. (To myself)

Brilliant!

YABU - I LOVE Vera!!! Yes, I often guess the killer but I still love it

Resurrecting this thread to say - THANK YOU to all the posters that recommended Shakespeare and Hathaway. I absolutely love it, and there are loads to work my way through.
