To think that Vera is the worst crime drama of our age?

I love a cosy ITV procedural, and happily go along with the expositional dialogue and hoary old stereotyped characters but fuck my old boots this is unwatchable stuff.

Tinkly 'suspense' music, mugging to camera, and her grating voice drove me over to Grand Designs by the second ad break. I believe it's on season 11, so clearly it's a much loved show in some quarters.

YABU - how dare you, I love watching detectives two decades past retirement age turn up and call a corpse 'pet'

YANBU - it used to be finely nuanced, edgy stuff but I feel it's lost it's way somewhat

Noooo! I will not stand for Vera disrespect!!

She's the highlight of my week 🤣

NeonJellyBaby · 10/09/2021 16:52

YANBU. My DM loves a good crime drama and is a huge fan of Midsommer Murders, but even she thinks Vera is shit.

Fuckityfucksake · 10/09/2021 17:02

Yes YABVU :)
I love wor Vera!
The accent was a bit annoying in the first series ( maybe second too) to those of us that live in the NE but she's so much better at it now.
I don't really watch any other crime/police drama's . I used to love John Thaw's inspector Morse but don't bother with others.

Another fab cosy murder series is ‘The Coroner’ it’s set in Devon, the scenery is breathtaking and the houses were dreamy! I was gutted the BBC only made two series (they have just re run series one) I never did get to find out if Davey and Jane got back together, bring it back BBC please!

Rubyupbeat · 10/09/2021 17:12

I LOVE this show soooooo much, I love Vera herself and want her to be my Aunt, and as for her house, my dream home.

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 10/09/2021 17:12

@FlatteredFool

Father Brown is awesome too. These shows are my comfort viewing. Once you know the characters they are become like old friends and there's a lot of humour to the episodes. At first view they may seem bland but there's more to them than meets the eye. Some great one-liners. Murder, She Wrote is an old favourite of mine since childhood. And Columbo. Quincy. Pure escapism.
I also used to love Quincy but I didn't like how he would sometimes be shown with amuch younger girlfriend. The woman in the opening credits on the boat is young enough to be his granddaughter.

Has anyone seen an old series called the Last Detective with Perer Davison.i enjoyed that !

KilledByWitches · 10/09/2021 17:15

The good news is there is a season four of Shakespeare and Hathaway and it’s due to air any time!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/09/2021 17:21

Love a bit of Vera - nice & undemanding tv. I don’t always want gritty drama

I’m still waiting for Kate Ellis Wesley Peterson series to be made into a tv show. I cannot understand how it hasn’t been!! Set in Devon principally around Dartmouth (the scenery) black DI (who is crying out ti be played by Adrian lester) whose best friend is an archeologist and very book has a historical mystery running alongside it! I mean come on!! It’s perfect

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 10/09/2021 17:23

I absolutely love the Wesley Peterson books! I'd also like the Elly Griffith's Ruth Galloway books made into a TV series.

Ooh this sounds interesting! It’s probably because it’s set in Dartmouth, Devon, I’m convinced that’s why they cancelled ‘The Coroner’ too far from London and costs too much money to make.
NapoleonOzmolysis · 10/09/2021 18:21

Anne Cleeves who wrote Vera and Shetland has a new series which I seem to remember is set in Devon. Perhaps that's why it's not been adapted yet?

pascheretloire · 10/09/2021 18:48

@QuantumWeatherButterfly oh yes, Martine McCutcheon felled by a wheel of cheese stands out!

AWellReadWoman · 10/09/2021 18:54

I've never watched Vera so can't comment on that but Silent Witness has really gone hill. It used to be so good but since the cast changed I really can't get into it anymore. Used to have the biggest crush on Harry Cunningham!

Good news indeed . Jo joyner has such a cheery gorgeous face love her .

Mrsjayy · 10/09/2021 18:58

There is a Canadian "The coroner" it isn't as fluffy as Devon, liked it though was on the Alibi channel.

MrsRobbieHart · 10/09/2021 18:59

I’ve never watched it. Because the trailers for it were enough to tell me it was a load of pants Grin

JudgeJ · 10/09/2021 19:18

@MissyB1

It used to be good, and the books are good, but the show has totally lost its way. Shame really as I love a good cop show.
I agree about the books but by dragging the series out they're using stories not from the Cleeves books. I far preferred the dramatisation of her Shetland books, Dougie Henshall was brilliant.
MissyB1 · 10/09/2021 19:28

@JudgeJ there is a new series of Shetland coming next year apparently.

StoneofDestiny · 10/09/2021 19:48

Vera, Father Brown, Granchester - all great comfort viewing.
Rebus - we need more!
Taggart - we need more!
Shetland - we need more!
Silent Witness - I watch it, but plots are ridiculous. No forensic person does what she does.
Rosemary and Thyme - for doing the ironing while watching - banal
Shakespeare and Hathaway - absurd

Shame we have no more Marple and Poirot

GoGadgetGo · 10/09/2021 19:53

I like her.

GoGadgetGo · 10/09/2021 19:53

Although, only watched like 5 episodes.

HelloDulling · 10/09/2021 19:54

I adore it, but mostly because I am in love with Paul Kaye. When Malcolm retires, so will I.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/09/2021 19:55

I love it - one of my favourite shows

RampantIvy · 10/09/2021 20:02

I really enjoy watching Vera, but knowing the north east reasonably well we can spot some holes in the plots. There isn't a ferry from North Shields to Tynemouth, for example (or maybe we got that wrong Blush)
