I know that AIBU isn’t the place for this but I need quick answers. My mother has sent me a link as he’ll be at a local venue on a date close to her 80th birthday & she thinks it would make a change from going out for a meal.
I’m sure I’ve read on here before that his live act is very different from e.g. QI. Is this a really bad idea?

My son was taken to see him a few years ago by his Godfather. Both of them said he was fairly awful as a live performer. But that might have been a one-off

You seem to have misunderstood most of the posts so I'll explain things in a basic way that even you can understand.

I wouldn't call stumbling, drunken ramblings that most people have described spending their hard earned money 'edgy material' .

I've seen him many times and don't recall a single occasion where he has been misogynistic and its something I would immediately pick up on. He is brilliant live, and in answer to you question re your mum I took my mum once and she really enjoyed it, she was in her 70s at the time. There was a time, probably around 8 years or so ago when he was going through some crises (break up, found out he had an adult child he was never told about, betrayed to press by someone he trusted etc). This all just came out on stage and there was one show in Edinburgh where I was literally watching him having a nervous breakdown on stage. He left the festival early and took a couple of years off and just recuperated back in the US. I think maybe if people saw those shows it might be colouring their judgement as he is usually brilliant.

Surely if your mum has asked to see him it's her choice anyway, 80 or not.

@MorganKitten

I’ve seen him several times and a friend dated him, he’s great live and really worth seeing.
I'm very jealous of your friend Morgan Kitten. He is 😍

I bought his DVD years back. I binned it. I didn’t want to charity shop it and have someone else sit down to watch it and be so disappointed and let down.

DH & I went to see him four years ago... 50% of it was great, but 50% was a bit close to the line.

Just before Covid, we took DH's parents to see him... they didn't enjoy it at all. Some of it was well-done and funny, but there was a lot of misogynistic stuff, even after his explanation about now having a daughter and rethinking a lot of things... And quite a few jokes about women and rape. It was exceedingly awkward, even though DH's mum was sure she wanted to go (his dad just went because she wanted to).

It's not at all like the comedy he does on HIGNFY.

In his own words “Stand Up is art, TV is business”. His TV work is very much tailored for mass appeal.
His live shows are very political with a lot of rambling in between jokes. Some of his views (from early life in Georgia) can be interesting, others (as PPs have said) are not so much.
Do you research before you buy your tickets.
Hope your mum has a great birthday either way
