I know that AIBU isn’t the place for this but I need quick answers. My mother has sent me a link as he’ll be at a local venue on a date close to her 80th birthday & she thinks it would make a change from going out for a meal.
I’m sure I’ve read on here before that his live act is very different from e.g. QI. Is this a really bad idea?

Seen him. He was crap. And unfunny and rude. (But not in a good way. )

KatieKat88 · 09/09/2021 09:01

I've seen him twice- first time I thought he was really funny (albeit more risqué than one TV), second time several years later and as with PPs lots of jokes that didn't sit right with me or with DH. This was at least 5 years ago so his material may have changed but I'm not rushing to book tickets again.

Carboncheque · 09/09/2021 09:11

He’s a misogynist arsehole.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 09/09/2021 09:14

I saw him live a few years ago and thought he was dreadful (had been a fan of his TV appearances). As in, I wondered if he was on drugs kind of awful.

@Divebar2021was the venue a ballroom by any chance?

GameSetMatch · 09/09/2021 09:23

We took my Grandma to a drag show for her 79th birthday, she always wanted to go to one.

SicilyRose · 09/09/2021 09:27

Another one who saw him years ago... he wasn't misogynistic that night, but he seemed to have some sort of breakdown on stage. Mumbling, rambling, abandoned the story he was telling, finished by apologising and shuffling off. He joked at the start that his water glass actually contained vodka, at the end we wondered if it hadn't actually been a joke.

It was really awkward, as the audience left the theatre we were all wearing WTAF faces!

Blackberrybunnet · 09/09/2021 09:47

I absolutely loved him on tv, and then saw him live. Big mistake. Agree with other posters who have found him bitter and mysogynistic. I saw him after he's had some kind of row with a booking he did for Glasgow Rangers FC, and all he did for the whole gig was go on and on about how he was right and they were wrong to have booked him. It was awful.

SprayedWithDettol · 09/09/2021 09:48

Yep, I thought Nooooooo! He can’t be 80! 🤣

Bontanics · 09/09/2021 10:05

He's toned down on TV. His live stand up is bitter and boring.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 09/09/2021 10:30

TowelStripes

Haha! I was thinking 'surely he isn't 80 🤣

Haha. That was my first thought too, ‘wow, he’s aged well!’

Me too 😂
MrsMariaReynolds · 09/09/2021 10:31

I'm another one who thought, ""God, he looks great for his age, doesn't he?" 😁

thecognoscenti · 09/09/2021 10:46

He's quite funny but there will be a LOT of n-wording so if that's going to make your DM uncomfortable I'd avoid it. If not then go for it.

HarrietsChariot · 09/09/2021 10:54

I've only seen him live once, Pride and Prejudice... and N!ggas (censored for obvious reasons), I wouldn't have thought it suitable for an 80 year old to be honest.

I don't think the individual's age is relevant, what is relevant is whether she wants an evening of - allegedly - misogyny and crude language.
Divebar2021 · 09/09/2021 12:00

@TheWayTheLightFalls

I saw him at the Hammersmith Apollo. I read a couple of reviews after we went and he had issues in other locations with the same joke. I’m not sure what I think of him now - I wasn’t offended by the joke but I found him disappointing.

PeoplePleaserBe · 09/09/2021 14:29

Saw him 4 years ago and a lot of people walked out during the performance.

Very sexist, very angry, in no way was he entertaining.

We stayed until the end but were in the minority.

Demelza82 · 09/09/2021 20:29

I've seen a lot of well known stand up comedians and he was the worst I have ever seen by a country mile. His material was weak but by the end of the gig he was clearly drunk on neat spirits lapsing into misogynistic rambling/stream.of consciousness.

bonfireheart · 09/09/2021 20:36

Haven't RTFT but we went to a Comedy Store event years ago when you don't know who the comedians are until they come on stage. He did an awful awful routine about a father raping his daughter and then started unbuttoning his trousers, well you cam imagine the reaction from the audience, I felt sick. The atmosphere in the room changed and people did boo. Everytime I see him now I still feel queasy.

MorganKitten · 09/09/2021 20:38

I’ve seen him several times and a friend dated him, he’s great live and really worth seeing.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 09/09/2021 20:50

we saw him a good few years ago (also at Perth @Babdoc )

Thought he was very good...as expected from his tv stuff but +++...as you'd expect I suppose for a live performance.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 09/09/2021 21:08

Literally the worst live act I have seen.
Turned up late, did a short set that he finished off with an unfunny disability "joke" about Katie Price's son.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow, I’m beginning to wonder if he toned things down for Perth, or if he has deteriorated since then?
The show you and I saw was very funny, and not at all misogynistic. I’m an elderly radfem and would certainly have noticed!
To those PPs who think 80 year old women need to be sheltered from edgy material - they are not Victorian maidens, ffs.
Those supposedly prim proper old ladies were still relatively young women during the swinging 60s. They have had a life, been teenagers, had sex, raised families. And they still like to have a laugh!

MorrisZapp · 10/09/2021 09:11

Imagine a comedian getting primetime gigs on TV if he was well known for being fantastic on women's rights but also a foul mouthed racist.
