Not to go to the christening?

louisebreann · 09/09/2021 07:40

I'm at a friend of a friends daughters christening on Saturday and I'm really not feeling great.
I'm loaded with cold and feel dreadful.
Red hot,sneezing,really bad cough.
I've done a covid lateral flow and it's negative.
So it's just a cold

I told friend and she told me to just come as it's just a cold but I'm unsure

Aibu not to go?
I already have a gift so I will give them that regardless
I'm just not sure how appropriate it is to go given the covid situation (and how worried people might be) if I'm coughing my head off in the corner.

If you have a cough and a temperature you need to be doing a PCR test.

Wole · 09/09/2021 07:42

So it's just a cold or it might be covid and the LFT hasn't picked it up.

louisebreann · 09/09/2021 07:42

Its deffo a cold.
Like i say the lateral flow is negative and I've had many a cold to know what it feels like.

I wouldn't go and I'd get a pcr.

NailsNeedDoing · 09/09/2021 07:43

A lot can change in two days with a cold. It’s good that you’ve given your friend warning, but do another test on Saturday and if it’s negative and you are feeling ok, you should go.

RealMermaid · 09/09/2021 07:43

Of course don't go to the christening! And don't rely on the results of a single lateral flow test to tell you it's not Covid. Lateral flows are not reliable if you already have symptoms, you need to go get a PCR test. But regardless of whether it's Covid don't go and spread your cold around. I got 'just a cold' a month ago, it turned into a chest infection and I've been ill for weeks and had to take antibiotics. A cold can still make people really ill, especially a little baby.

Cocomarine · 09/09/2021 07:43

Who goes to the christening of a friend of a friend’s daughter anyway?

And no, Covid aside, nobody wants your germs there.

hellcatspangle · 09/09/2021 07:43

You need a pcr test to confirm. To be honest though I probably wouldn't go to an event with a bad cold these days!

Wole · 09/09/2021 07:44

@louisebreann

Its deffo a cold. Like i say the lateral flow is negative and I've had many a cold to know what it feels like.
And how many times have you had covid to know what it feels like?
Yodelayhehoo · 09/09/2021 07:44

I'd say you need a PCR but regardless I wouldn't go feel like shit, plus no one would thank you for spreading germs around!
Friend of a friend, it's fine!

SheWoreYellow · 09/09/2021 07:44

LFTs have a a high false positivity rate. You’re not meant to use them if you have symptoms. Please a PCR. The delta variant presents more like a cold in some people.

ImInStealthMode · 09/09/2021 07:44

I wouldn't go. I have similar symptoms and had a PCR yesterday (which I suggest you also do, aren't LFTs more effective when symptomless?). I'm negative but still coughing and sneezing so not going anywhere until that's stopped.

Cold or not, people's immune systems are weakened after 18 months of not picking things up here and there. Don't go give them all your cold!

hellcatspangle · 09/09/2021 07:45

And it's not "deffo a cold" just because you've had one before. Many people I know who've had covid said it was identical to a cold.

NerrSnerr · 09/09/2021 07:45

You've got a temperature so need to do a PCR. My daughter has tonsillitis diagnosed by the GP but still needed a PCR due to her temp. (The GP still saw her before the results came back).

If everyone diagnosed themselves no one would bother getting tested as it would always be 'just a cough' or 'just a Cole's

SheWoreYellow · 09/09/2021 07:45

Sorry, please *get a PCR. And don’t go to the christening. Even if it is just a cold, think of all the people who will then get it and have to isolate while waiting for a PCR result.

Wole · 09/09/2021 07:45

And its a friend of a friend's daughter so you won't be missed tbh

louisebreann · 09/09/2021 07:47

I was 100% thinking not to go ...it's my friend who said it looks bad if you don't (I agree I won't be missed and she probably only invited me to be nice and not leave me out )

OP posts:
louisebreann · 09/09/2021 07:48

I've had covid and didn't feel like this (I wasn't sneezing and was knocked out ,I still can get up and move about just feel knackered )

hedgehogger1 · 09/09/2021 07:50

Cold symptoms are now the top 5 symptoms

Not to go to the christening?

It will look even worse if you turn up coughing.
hedgehogger1 · 09/09/2021 07:51

Argh that's not right

Not to go to the christening?
AntiSocialDistancer · 09/09/2021 07:54

If yourr coughing you need a PCR test.

LazySundayPlease · 09/09/2021 07:57

If you've had covid already, it's even more likely that if you get it again, you'll have milder symptoms exactly because you've had it before. My family member had a light cold, sneezing, low temperature for a day. It WAS Covid.

Lateral flows are very unreliable and not as sensitive as a PCR. Same family member had 3 negative lateral flows, then a positive PCR and still a negative lateral flow the day after the PCR that was positive.

Get a PCR! Lateral flows are ONLY for those with no symptoms to pick up SOME asymptomatic cases. These have been the clear instructions since they were introduced.

Also, don't go. If you pass on even just a cold and others get temperatures/coughs they will all need to isolate and stay off work/school until they do the right thing and get a negative PCR.

mickeysminnie · 09/09/2021 07:57

Even if it is 'just a cold' don't go spreading your germs around! HmmConfused

RampantIvy · 09/09/2021 07:58

it's my friend who said it looks bad if you don't

And it will look even worse if you do.

I thought it was common knowledge that you need a PCR test and not a lateral flow test if you are displaying any symptoms.

The symptoms of the current variant are more like cold symptoms, and that coupled with a temperature means you absolutely should get a PCR test.
